1. Before we start

The Armiga and the Armiga Project have no relation with Commodore or Amiga, which are registered trademarks of their respective owners.

Some considerations about the project status and current Armiga capabilities: ● For Armigas with FDD (Full and Hack editions), use only the 2.1A supplied power adapter. ● Use the supplied power cable. Powering the Armiga through the miniUSB port is not recommended. ● Always insert and eject the microSD card with your Armiga turned off. ● AGA is not supported by now. ● Copy protected disks are not supported by now. ● HD disks are not properly read. Please cover the hole to prevent errors.

Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games

A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms – children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued.

If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.

24

ARMIGA User Guide v0.8

5.4.8.1. Multiple drive support Armiga supports up to 4 “virtual floppy disk drives”, so up to 4 game disks can be accessed at any given time. However, this is transparent to the user and it does always keep the 4 mos recently used disks.

This means that in most multi-disk games, each disk should only need to be inserted once and will be cached for future accesses, significantly reducing the disk changes without adding any overhead for the user.

5.5. Network Management

5.5.1. Connecting to Armiga by network To avoid excessive extraction of the Armiga SD card, a network connection is provided.

For using it, you must connect the Armiga to your local network by inserting a cable into the Ethernet port placed in a side of the Armiga.

In your personal computer, we recommend to install the graphic client FileZilla. You can download it from this link. This client works on Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

FileZilla Download https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

In your Armiga Settings option, located in the Main Menu, locate the IP Address field. This is the IP Address of your Armiga device in your local network.

25

ARMIGA User Guide v0.8

5.6.3. From USB Plug a USB pendrive or hard disk with ADFs and follow the instructions on section From a USB drive to launch your games. 5.6.4. Making a floppy image (ADF)

For best compatibility, the FDD controller is calibrated on each track, so disk dumping can take around 2 minutes.

With your Armiga turned on and after the Armiga OS has loaded, insert a DD Amiga disk (for HD disks, please cover the hole). The disk will automatically be dumped into a ADF disk image.

While making the image, you may hear the head going from track to track, making a characteristic “tack” sound.

Once the disk image is done, you’ll hear the FDD head going back to the beginning of the disk for about one second and a visual indicator will be shown in the main menu:

The new ADF will be automatically named with the year, month, day, hour, minutes and seconds when it finished, but you can rename it as described in the section Renaming a game or savestate file.

You can manage the ADF images by following the previous sections.

6.3. Floppy disk controller (only for Armiga with FDD)

For programming the PIC you’ll need Microchip’s MPLAB-X (http://www.microchip.com/pagehandler/en-us/family/mplabx/)

● Make sure your Armiga is turned off and fully disconnected. ● Turn your Armiga upside down on a clean stable surface. ● Unscrew the Phillips screws (star screws) on the bottom of your Armiga to open it (do not unscrew the slotted ones, as they hold the FDD in place). ● Hold both parts of the case firmly and turn it upside again. ● Carefully remove the top of the case to reveal the FDD, controller and main board. ● Locate the FDD controller, which connects the FDD and the mainboard and looks like this picture:

1.PIC microcontroller 2.Auxiliar inverter chip

The controller can be on either side of the FDD, depending on its model ● Remove the PIC from the controller: ○ To ease the extraction, first extract the chip marked with a 2 on the picture: ■ Using a flat, preferably non metallic tool, insert it on one side, between the chip and the socket and slightly twist it. ■ Do the same on the other side of the chip. ■ Repeat the process until the chip is released from the socket. ■ Keep the chip in a safe place. ○ With the first chip extracted, do the same procedure on the PIC (chip marked as 1 on the picture).

33

ARMIGA User Guide v0.8

○ Place the chip in the supplied programmer (for other programmers, please refer to its documentation), making sure the half circle on top of the chip and the half circle on the programmer socket are on the same side (pointing to the miniUSB connector). ○ Plug the programmer on the computer and launch MPLAB-X. ○ Create a new MPLAB-X project from HEX file: ■ In MPLAB-X, go to File->Import and choose the Hex/ELF option.

■ In the wizard, select the hex file you’ve downloaded from our website and set: ● Family: 32-bit MCUs (PIC32) ● Device: PIC32MX250F128B ● Hardware Tool: Starter Kits (PKOB) . ○ Only for Armiga Hack Edition with the supplied programmer. For other programmers, please read your documentation

34

■ On the next step, give a name to your project and choose the folder where the project will be created. We recommend setting it as main project and using the project location as the project folder.

35

ARMIGA User Guide v0.8

■ Next step is a summary.

36

ARMIGA User Guide v0.8

■ Once everything is done, select the “Make and Program Device Main Project” ■

○ When the programming is finished, unplug the programmer from your computer. ○ Extract the PIC the same way you extracted it from the controller, alternately twisting a flat, preferably non-metallic tool between the chip and the socket.

37

ARMIGA User Guide v0.8

○ Carefully insert it back on its controller socket: Make sure the half circle in the PIC and the half circle in the socket match (both pointing to the chip 2 socket) ○ Carefully press the PIC, holding the controller on the down side for it not to bend. Be careful with your fingers as pins are located on that side. ○ Now carefully insert the chip 2 on its socket. Make sure the half circle in the chip and the half circle in the socket match (both pointing to the FDD) ○ Carefully press the chip 2, holding the controller on the down side for it not to bend. Be careful with your fingers as pins are located on that side. ○ Put the top cover of the Armiga, making sure all the connectors fit in their holes. ○ Turn your Armiga upside down with being careful for the parts not to move. ○ Place the Phillips screws (star screws) back in place and gently screw them half the way and once all are in place, screw them all the way.
