Live at the Proms Ludwig van Beethoven the Complete Symphonies Daniel Barenboim West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Ludwig van Beethoven the Complete Symphonies Daniel Barenboim West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Ludwig van Beethoven On the occasion of the Olympic Summer games held in London Symphonies Nos. 1-9 and as part of the official “cultural Olympiad” the BBC Proms invited Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Conductor Daniel Barenboim to perform all nine Beethoven symphonies at the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra West-Eastern Divan Orchestra - for the first time since 1942 all nine symphonies were played as a cycle at the Proms. Chorus National Youth Choir of Great Britain Daniel Barenboim digs deep into the heart of the Beethoven Soprano Anna Samuil canon, treating the symphonies more like precursors of full- Mezzo-Soprano Waltraud Meier fledged romantic music than as successors of Mozart and Tenor Michael König Haydn. His Beethoven is grand, proudly emotional and lush in Bass René Pape sound, far removed from the reduced settings often heard today. Commenting on the Ninth, whose last movement boasts the Video Directors Jonathan Haswell renowned soloists Anna Samuil, Waltraud Meier, Michael König Oliver MacFarlane (Nos. 4 & 3) and René Pape, the critic of The Guardian asserted: “I have not Rodney Greenberg (Nos. 8 & 7) heard a more infectious (performance of the Ninth), nor one Cat. no. A025047460000 in which Beethoven’s exhortation to mankind to overcome its divisions was conveyed with more natural feeling.” Lengths tbd The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was founded by Daniel A BBC/UNITEL CLASSICA co-production Barenboim and Edward Said and is formed of young musicians from Israel, Palestine, various Arab countries and Spain - their Shot in HDTV 1080 youthful joy in music-making leaps over national, ethnic and religious borders. The musicians get together every May/June for rehearsals with the Maestro and then tour across the globe.
