AAMVA Participates in the IACP 2020 Conference

On Thursday, October 22, AAMVA members conducted a virtual presentation at the 2020 IACP Conference to discuss law enforcement interaction with the mobile Driver’s License (mDL). This session presented factors behind the movement from the traditional driver’s license to a mobile format, sharing how law enforcement can utilize this technology to enhance efficiencies. The presentation examined technology requirements, standards, interoperability, and national and international efforts. Attendees received a variety of resources including the AAMVA mDL FAQ for Law Enforcement. Participating AAMVA members included: Captain Todd Hartline, Nevada Highway Patrol; Mike McCaskill, Chief Administrative Officer, Florida Highway Patrol; and Paul Steier, Law Enforcement Program Manager, AAMVA.

Monday morning), there may be periods during which the CDLIS/S2S Central Site is in inquiry-only mode or is unavailable (over and above the regularly scheduled maintenance window of 2:00 AM ET to 5:00 AM ET on Sunday, December 13, 2020). Now Available: License Plate Standard - Edition 2 and License Plate Verification Program License plates quickly identify motor vehicles and vehicle registrant information and are most effective when they are designed to optimize legibility to the human eye as well as for license plate readers (LPRs). License plates serve one common purpose: to identify motor vehicles.AAMVA's License Plate Standard - Edition 2 was developed to support a jurisdiction’s ability to produce license plates that enhance accurate license plate identification while not limiting a jurisdiction’s flexibility for innovation and allowing for multiple license plate designs. It is designed for full-size license plates issued by jurisdictions; portions of it may not apply to smaller license plates typically issued to motorcycles and other similar vehicles. *Register for the following training sessions HERE. To assist jurisdictions in determining if their license plates meet these standards, AAMVA is now offering the License Plate Verification Program (LPVP). The LPVP provides jurisdictions, at no cost, the opportunity to submit up to four license plates OCTOBER - UNI during each AAMVA fiscal year for comparison to the 2020 AAMVA License Plate Standard. New Driver Road Test System Will Improve Access (Alberta) Albertans will be able to book passenger vehicle road tests directly with local registry agents or through a new online system starting Dec. 1 for tests to be conducted after Jan. 5, 2021. Registry agents will be able to hire or contract driver examiners directly. This will repair the damage done when road tests were nationalized in March 2019, a move that caused half of the province’s driver examiners to leave the system and increased wait times significantly. Georgia Driver Services’ Motorcycle Safety Program Announces $114,902 Grant Award The Department of Driver Services’ (DDS) Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GSMP) has received a grant for just over $114,902 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). This funding will be used to help reduce motorcycle fatalities, increase driver awareness of motorcycles, and help train motorcycle riders on how to ride safely. According to the Insurance Information Institute, motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile rider. Read more here.

Illinois Secretary of State Announces Teen Driver Crash Fatalities Down 74% Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that teen driver deaths are down 74% since 2007. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), since White’s efforts to overhaul the state’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) laws took effect in 2008, teen driving fatalities have dropped 74%. Many cite White’s nationally heralded GDL program for the dramatic decrease in fatalities. Read more here.

Ohio Survey Says Move Over Law Knowledge Needs Boost The Ohio Department of Transportation, the Ohio Turnpike, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and AAA jointly recently released new data gleaned from a survey that there are significant gaps in knowledge among Ohio motorists about Ohio’s Move Over law. That survey – conducted by Brittany Shoots-Reinhard, research assistant professor at the Ohio State University Department of Psychology – found the “gaps in knowledge” regarding the state’s Move Over law are especially significant when it comes to construction crews or tow trucks. SSA Alert: Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams Social Security is warning the public about a nationwide imposter scam. Scammers pretend they are from Social Security to seek your personal information and money. The caller may say there is a problem with your Social Security number or account. Scammers play on emotions, such as fear and confusion, in order to convince you to either provide your personal information or send payments, such as cash, wire transfers, or gift cards. Scammers may also email fake documents or text a message in an effort to get you to comply with their demands.

If you receive a suspicious call, text, or email do the following:

1. HANG UP or DO NOT RESPOND! 2. DO NOT provide money — cash, gift card, wire transfers, or pre-paid debit cards — or personal information. 3. REPORT IT to Social Security’s law enforcement team, the Office of the Inspector General, at oig.ssa.gov/. 4. SHARE this information with others to increase awareness.

Traffic Safety Marketing: Boycott Blackout Wednesday Impaired driving is prevalent over due in part to cultural phenomena like “Blackout Wednesday” that highlight and even encourage the heavy consumption of and drugs throughout this holiday weekend. Impaired- driving-related crashes spike during the Thanksgiving holiday season. According to NHTSA, from 2013 to 2017, more than 800 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period, making it one of the deadliest holidays on our roadways. NHTSA's goal is to assist law enforcement, and to educate the public on the dangers and consequences of impaired driving.Read more at trafficsafetymarketing.gov.

National Safety Council Releases SAFER (Safe Actions for Employee Returns) As people continue to return to the office, the National Safety Council (NSC) has published new resources for public agencies and other employers to navigate keeping employees safe and healthy. The NSC SAFER includes a playbook for an office and customer facing considerations. NSC has also created a free organizational vulnerability assessment (OVA). If someone familiar with the steps a workplace has taken to respond to COVID fill this out, they will receive recommendations from NSC based on SAFER data and information of steps a workplace should take to keep workers safe.
