Impaired Driving Update Issue: November 2019 2018 FARS Data Released NHTSA has released the 2018 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data. The data show Highlights improvement for highway safety in many areas. These are new trends supporting alcohol consumption or using marijuana on the night before and throughout the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. The increased movement behind these trends, make it essential to continue educating the public about the dangers of impaired driving. With millions of Americans driving to their holiday destination preventing impaired driving is key to ensuring everyone arrives at Thanksgiving dinner and back home safely. NHTSA’s Blackout Wednesday campaign takes place on November 27th followed by the Ditch Danksgiving campaign, November 28th - December 1st. • Blackout Wednesday • Ditch Danksgiving 2 Impaired Driving Update NHTSA Campaign The holiday season is right around the corner and while people are celebrating with family and friends we want to make sure everyone drives sober. NHTSA’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over paid media campaign will run December 11, 2019 thru January 1, 2020. The enforcement mobilization will begin on Decem- ber 13, 2019 and conclude on January 1, 2020. Utilize the enforcement marketing materials in your efforts to prevent drunk driving and reduce related fatalities. 3 Impaired Driving Update Partner Spotlight State Transportation Legislative Trends and Laws Through an agreement with NHTSA, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) has information on State legislative trends and laws relating to transportation issues available for anyone to use on their website. On the Transportation page you’ll find information on a wide range of topics, from drug -impaired driving to electric scooters. A list of recent documents on traffic safety can also be found here. Background provided will help law enforcement understand what to do if they encounter the devices in a traffic stop and how they might be modified for illegal use. The information provided will help law enforcement officers better recognize the potential cause of observed impairment or, if not initially observed, know that types of things to look for in order to determine if the device could cause impairment while driving.
