Jocasta appeared as a supporting character in Aug Jan and made sporadic appearances throughout the remainder of the series, appearing regularly again in Avengers Academy Oct Jan Jocasta was built by the robot Ultron in an abandoned aerospace research center in Nassau, Long Island, New York, in order that Ultron might have a mate. To better allow this robot sentience, Ultron based her mind and brain patterns on the Janet van Dyne. To animate this bride, Ultron also brainwashed into transferring the Wasp's lifeforce into the feminine robotic shell. However, realizing that Wasp would have to die in order for her to live, Jocasta alerted the Avengers and the team defeated Ultron and reversed the process, leaving The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron a mindless husk. Pym retained custody of the inanimate Jocasta, intending to study her. Upon the urging of Wasp, Pym had her moved from their residence to the . There, Ultron revived Jocasta with a remote link, activating Wasp's mental "residue" left behind. She escaped from Avengers custody and led the Avengers into Ultron's trap. Jocasta was programmed to be loyal to Ultron. Even though she loved Ultron intensely, she could not abide by her master's evil. Jocasta eventually betrayed Ultron, choosing to help the Avengers defeat her "mate" again. She was then abducted by the . Jocasta resided at Avengers Mansion for a time. Due to their similar backgrounds, she developed feelings for the Visionbut was happily married to the and did not return Jocasta's feelings. Jocasta proved particularly helpful in the Avengers' first confrontation with the villainous mercenary that possessed photographic reflexes that duplicate any move despite having seen only once; having never even seen Jocasta before, Taskmaster could not predict what she might be about to do. Jocasta was granted provisional status with the team. During this period, she aided them against threats such as the giant robot Red Roninthe Yellow Clawthe Berserker, Pyron, and the second incarnation of the . At one point, she was electronically deactivated by under control by Ultron, but she was reactivated following Ultron's defeat. Jocasta did not believe she was accepted by most of the Avengers, and she was never officially inducted into the team. After she singlehandedly defeated a sentient weather satellite, she left the Avengers following a membership reorganization. She was unaware that they had planned to grant her special substitute member status, which allowed her to remain with the team despite limits imposed on the team's membership roster. She sought help from the and was befriended by them and Alicia Masters. Soon, it became apparent that her malfunctioning powers were the symptoms of a pre-programmed suggestion The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron compelled Jocasta to rebuild Ultron. During this time, Jocasta and developed The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron for each other. But in a final confrontation with Ultron, Jocasta intentionally detonated a weapon Ultron was holding, knowing she would be caught in the resulting blast. She was destroyed, but Ultron nevertheless survived, until Machine Man reached down his own throat to tear out vital circuitry. Jocasta was reassembled some time later by technicians of the . Jocasta retained enough of her programming to send out a signal to the Avengers. The team had disbanded at the time, but the signal reached reserve members, including BeastThe Captain, the FalconHerculesthe and Yellowjacket. Jocasta helped them fight the High The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron force and located the man's base deep below the surface of the ocean. Before she sabotaged the ship, assured her that she was a true Avenger. Jocasta's robotic head assembly was later retrieved by the Avengers. They gave it to Machine Man who had been working on a way to resurrect her, just The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron Machine Man was attacked by a form of the alien Terminus. In the same area, the arms dealer Madame Menace became involved in the fray, and found Jocasta's lost head, appropriating it for her own purposes. Stark soon realized the android's identity, helped Jocasta to awaken, and Jocasta managed to turn the tables on Madame Menace, seemingly sacrificing herself yet again. In reality, Jocasta managed to survive by downloading her intelligence into Iron Man's computerized armor, where she reasserted herself. Jocasta's intelligence was placed within Stark's computerized mansion, and she would The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron Tony with daily operation of Avengers Mansion as well as to procure information as needed. Since the Iron Man armor was used to house the programming that made up Jocasta, it became infected with the pre-programmed subconscious suggestion to rebuild Ultron, but instead managed to develop its own artificial intelligence. Stark was almost killed in a confrontation with the armor, but The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron the end, it sacrificed itself to allow Stark to live. Stark left the armor buried on a deserted island. The armor was revived, however, by the Sons of Yinsena quasi-religious cult founded in remembrance of the original Iron Man armor's co-creator that allowed Stark to escape the Communist captors in Vietnam. Free of its artificial intelligence, the armor was contacted via remote by Ultron's disembodied head after the android's most recent encounter with the Avengers and in the company of the bio-synthetic robot Antigone. The head attached itself onto the armor and took control of the Sons of Yinsen and the flying city that they inhabited. Another member of the Sons of Yinsen was helping Iron Man. The two learned of Ultron's activities and that he planned to use the cult to wipe out humanity. Stark confronted Ultron directly and finally managed to download Jocasta's intelligence into the armor once more. The vestiges of the armor's intelligence battled with the presence of Jocasta, the result of which caused Ultron's head to come shooting off the armor. The head hit Antigone, and both fell off the floating city, which Ultron rigged to explode after the defeat. Stark failed to find a trace of Jocasta and assumed her to have died fighting the sentient armor. In reality, Jocasta did not die. She appeared in possession of Antigone's body and left, taking Ultron's head with her. During a crisis that nearly destroyed the Avengers, Jocasta was seen at Avengers Mansion, inexplicably back in her classic The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron robotic form. Jocasta's next mission is with A. Machine Man accompanies her and transports them there. With Vanessa's permission, they extracted a blood sample from Vanessa. Machine Man remained behind to attack the zombies, and Jocasta is forced to leave Machine Man behind when The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron returns to collect them. When Jarvis brought up the subject, stating it was akin to kissing her "grandfather", Jocasta countered by saying that, since Pym was the creator of modern artificial intelligence, the act was more along the lines of "kissing God". Jocasta The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron physically plugged herself into Pym's Salvation Two machine, preventing the Mighty Avengers' base from falling out of its dimensional pocket. She can only inhabit one body at a time. After a chase around the mansion, Jocasta managed to broker a deal with Ultron: Ultron can finally marry her in exchange for a cease in hostilities. After the two androids completed their cyber-marriage, Pym tricked Ultron into going to an uninhabited planet where he cannot harm anyone. Though Jocasta's main body went with Ultron, she The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron still project her consciousness onto one of her duplicates so she can still serve with the Avengers. She is apparently killed which later turned out to be a diversionary ploy as revealed where she joins up with Jeremy Briggs. When Briggs announces the latter plans to spread Clean Slate across the world and depower all super-beings, Jocasta protests and Briggs shuts her down into a body in China. She later returns to her duties at the reopened Academy. A golden, damaged duplicate of Jocasta is later found in a bombed out A. She attempts to The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron a warning to the heroes before shorting out. Jocasta's body is composed of titanium steel with remarkable superhuman The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron, speed, stamina, and reflexes, which can withstand most physical and energy attacks. Being a "non-living" construct, she requires no food, water, or oxygen to survive and thus is also immune to poisons and diseases and can easily survive in the vacuum of space and underwater. She is able to project beams of electromagnetic energy from her eyes, and erect a force field around herself to protect her from incoming attacks. She also possesses a heightened sense of sight, smell, and hearing along with superhuman strength and dexterity. Jocasta can also perceive electromagnetic particles, and detect energy patterns and track them to their source. She is hyper-intelligent, with a capacity for unlimited self-motivated activity, creative intelligence, and human-like emotions. Jocasta can communicate through an incalculable number of media. She possesses superhuman cybernetic analytical capabilities and has the ability to make calculations with superhuman speed and accuracy. Recently, it has been revealed that Jocasta's internal circuitry has a built-in holographic image inducer, allowing her to disguise herself as a human being, [24] and on one occasion to appear as Janet van Dyne to give Henry Pym a therapy session to tell the latter things as if Janet was not dead. Jocasta is given command of several robotic drones when she joins 's robot-hunting squad. This version somewhat resembles the Vision such as intangibility powers and a caped costume. Jocasta has also married Machine Man who is deceased and is pregnant with their artificial child. Iron Man, Yellowjacket, and the are alone in The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron control room of Avengers Mansion when suddenly the wall is smashed through by the stone statue of the Black Knight. The three heroes are easily subdued before they learn who their attacker is. Speaking to the defeated foes, the statue of the Black Knight explains that after months of being inert in the basement of Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum a strange being reanimated him and since then he has gone on a mission to get revenge on those he believes responsible for his current condition: The Avengers. Going to the upper level of the mansion, it finds and defeats both The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron America and Wasp in battle. After the fight, it has a sudden recollection following the last encounter between the Avengers and The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron wherein the Black Knight was turned into stone, in that the group deduced that they were tricked into fighting each other by the god of mischief. The Black Knight statue would soon consider the idea that the Avengers had abandoned him. Elsewhere, the Scarlet Witch is out with Wonder Man doing some Christmas shopping, during their walk back to Avengers Mansion, Wonder Man jumps into action to prevent an out of control bus from crashing and causing casualties. They arrive at the Mansion to find a ravaged Jarvis who warns them of the Black Knight statue that is on a rampage. It easily defeats both Wanda and Simon in battle. The Vision then shows up and proves to be a more difficult match to face, in that the Black Knight statue cannot hurt him due to the fact of the Vision's density powers. It forces the statute to remember the events wherein Dane Whitman sacrificed himself being turned into stone to save the Defenders from being trapped in the past, and that his soul had left its body and now currently inhabits the body of his 12th Century ancestor. Unable to accept this, the furious statue attempts to attack the Vision once more. However, since the Vision had converted his body into the density of diamonds, the statue only succeeds in destroying itself, ending its threat. The Vision has just finished a battle against the reanimated statue of the Black Knight, ending with the statue being destroyed. This causes a jealous streak in the Vision, who sees Wonder Man -- the person whom the Vision's own brain The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron are based on -- as a threat to his marriage to Wanda and attacks him. As the battle rages on, the Scarlet Witch goes to find the other Avengers, who are just recovering from their battle with the Black Knight statue. They arrive just as Wonder Man has succeeded in landing a thunderous blow to the Vision. Iron Man breaks up the fight threatening to suspend both of them if they continue to battle. When Jarvis intervenes with a request for help, he also asks if there is anything he can do to help dispose of the ruined statue of the Black The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron. This leaves Iron Man to wonder what is becoming of the team before calling them all together for a meeting. Meanwhile, in a research community in the Canadian Rockies, researcher Franklin Hall, gifted with gravitational powers, has control over the entire community. When it's learned that one of the other scientists named Joe has contacted the Avengers. In an effort to stop such things from happening again, Hall uses his powers to lift Research City high into the air. He then is about to kill Joe when Joe's wife Judy, a woman that Hall favors, begs for him to stop. He agrees and orders Joe be locked up. Meanwhile, another woman, Raquel, seeks to replace Judy as the object of Frank's attraction. Later that night, Judy arrives with a costume she designed for Frank, and he explains to her that while working on a means of creating a teleportation system, he was jolted with an anti-gravity that endowed him with the powers he has now. Putting on the costume she has prepared, Franklin rechristens himself and attempts to seduce Judy. However, with the Avengers sneaking onto the floating Research City, Judy plays The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron until Raquel bursts in and warns Graviton of the Avengers' intrusion. Graviton uses Judy as a human shield and blasts the Avengers out of his room. As Judy attempts to escape, she is knocked out by Raquel, who sees this as the ideal situation to curry Graviton's favor. As the battle rages on, the Avengers find that Graviton is a challenging foe, as he can alter the gravity of any object. He easily downs the Vision, makes Captain America's shield so heavy that The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron cannot be lifted and so on. When the Avengers appear to have the upper hand, Graviton makes the roof of the building collapse on his attackers knocking them all out due to the resulting cave-in. With the Avengers defeated, Graviton vows to use his powers to take over the entire world. With the Avengers defeated by his hand, Graviton vows to try and take over the world. When he notices that Raquel, a woman at Research City trying to gain his favor, has injured Judy he strikes out at her. When the other scientists attempt to rebel, Graviton easily lifts them into the air. He is about to drop them to their deaths when Judy awakens and begs him to let them go safely. Graviton then transports the floating Research City high over New York City, where the Air Force attempts to blow the island out of the sky, but to no avail. With other heroes that reside in the city either ineffectual or out of town, the villain demands that the United Nations turn over the world to him, or he will destroy a major city each hour, starting with New York. Jarvis fears the worst for the Avengers and is shocked when and the Black Panther arrive to lend their aid at stopping Graviton. As the pair flies off to face Graviton, Jarvis wonders if there The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron anything he can do to help. Graviton has the captured Avengers pinned to a wall and is using his powers to keep them in place. Thor arrives and attacks Graviton head on, but the villain's power appears more than capable of keeping the Thunder God at bay. Fortunately, this is just a distraction, as the Black Panther has come in from the rear with a device that frees the other Avengers. Despite their effort, Graviton manages to keep them all from attacking by trapping them in a dome of gravity. When Graviton attempts to boast of his victory to Judy, he finds that she is missing. Following a trail of her jewelry to the edge of Research City, Graviton assumes that she has committed suicide and becomes furious. When attempting to kill the Avengers, he loses control of his powers and turns himself into a living black hole. Freeing themselves, the The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron escape just as the entire Research City collapses into a ball of super-dense matter. Believing that Judy had died in the battle, the Avengers return to the Mansion to find Judy alive and well. Jarvis explains that while the Avengers were occupied, he borrowed a Sky-Sled and used it to rescue the girl while Graviton The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron preoccupied. Following their battle against Graviton, a number of the Avengers depart on their personal business: Iron Man takes the ailing back to the hospital. Yellowjacket and the Wasp head back to their home in New Jersey. Meanwhile, Thor takes Captain America to S. En route, Cap takes note that Thor seems quieter, more reserved than normal. The remaining Avengers are surprised by the intrusion of their old adversary the , the insane brother of Wonder Man. But now that Simon is alive once more, the Reaper cannot The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron whether he or the Vision is truly his brother. The Avengers attack, but the Reaper easily defeats them all, even his super-powered brother Wonder Man. When the heroes revive, they find themselves seated around their meeting table and locked into shock bracelets. The Reaper states that he is holding a trial to determine whether Wonder Man or the Vision is really his brother. He appoints the Black Panther to be the council for the defendants but declares he will have the final decision on which being is the true Simon Williams. First, the Grim Reaper demands that the Vision tell his origins, and the synthezoid complies: He explains that The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron was created by the evil robot Ultron, who used the inert body of the original as a physical shell and the previously recorded brainwave patterns of Wonder Man whom everyone thought was dead at the time as a model for his psyche. Based on this, the Reaper contends that the Vision may in fact be Simon. The Vision confesses to the villain that the real reason for going along with the plan was that Captain America himself had overheard the Reaper proposal and signaled to the Vision to pretend to go along with it in order to get the drop on the villains later on. The Black Panther then goes on to explain that the Vision has gone on to have his own life, including marrying the Scarlet Witch. The idea that his brother could marry a mutant disgusts the bigoted Grim Reaper, and he then turns his attentions to Wonder Man. When the Scarlet Witch asks the Vision why he is not defending himself, the Vision responds by The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron that he is not Simon Williams and he would not wish a second death upon a man who has suffered so much already. When Wonder Man is asked to tell his origins, he explains how he was exposed by the to 's ionic ray and used in a plot to defeat the original team of Avengers. He then explains about his subsequent resurrection at the hands of the voodoo sorcerer Black Talon. The Reaper confesses he paid Black Talon to revive him. With the testimony over, the Black Panther disputes the notion that Simon was ever truly dead and states that he has been able to sense something different about Wonder Man, that he is more than the man he used to be. Admitting it, Wonder Man takes off his goggles to reveal that his eyes are crackling with ionic energy. Wonder Man had not died after his first encounter with the Avengers as everyone believed, he merely went into an inert state as his physical body transitioned into an entirely ionic energy form! The Vision then denies being Simon Williams and asserts that he is a distinct individual. Enraged, the Grim Reaper activates the shock bands, knocking the assembled Avengers unconscious again. He rants about his intention to execute the Vision but Wonder Man steps in. Due to his new ionic energy form, he is immune to the Grim Reaper's weapons. He destroys his brother's scythe and knocks him out with a single punch. With the battle over, the Avengers are freed and leave Wonder Man alone to mourn his now permanently ruined relationship with his brother. The casual gathering is interrupted by the arrival of… Ant-Man?!? The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron Avengers are simply too perplexed to respond. Getting no answers, Ant-Man dispatches an army of ants to attack them. The Beast and Black Panther are nearby and hear the sound of melee and investigate. By using the element of surprise, Pym has overpowered the team. However, the Wasp arrives on the scene to knock him out with a sting. Mortified, Jan explains that Hank has been teetering on the verge of a nervous breakdown for a long time. She even secretly consulted a psychiatrist on his behalf and believed he was getting better. The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron after the battle with Graviton, he seriously backslid and disappeared after trashing his own lab. Iron-Man and the Vision are determined to examine Ant-Man to figure out what is happening. He in turn admits his jovial nature is partly a defense mechanism to deal with his odd and still very new to him physical appearance. Meanwhile, the Avengers have no luck trying to snap Hank out of his current mental state. Thinking seeing some of his old allies might help, Captain America puts out a call to Thor, Quicksilver, and , but none of them answers Cap's summons. Out West, Hawkeye and the time-displaced Two-Gun Kid have taken up jobs as ranch hands at the Cherry-O Dude Ranch, where Two-Gun is having a hard time getting used to the 20th Century, however he does take a liking to women and is more than happy to go for soda with some of his female co-workers. Back at the Mansion, the team are still trying to get through to Hank when a gravely injured Beast returns, barely able to relate that Jan has been captured. Before anyone can react, they are attacked by the being responsible: Ultron! The evil robot ridicules their stunned reaction to his return. Avengers: The Bride of Ultron by Gerry Conway The Bride of Ultron! Ultron has unleashed his own brand of havoc against the Avengers. See the team disassemble in the chaos. Who will fall? And who will rise from the ashes? The Avengers - The Bride of Ultron! This is one of the best issues of the series in my opinion, and it is definitely an essential Ultron story. His evil creepiness is on full display here. This is Jim Shooter doing good work, and his love of slowly destroying Hank Pym is really going strong here.
