  • David Olive: His Life and Work
David Olive his life and work Edward Corrigan Department of Mathematics, University of York, YO10 5DD, UK Peter Goddard Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ 08540, USA St John's College, Cambridge, CB2 1TP, UK Abstract David Olive, who died in Barton, Cambridgeshire, on 7 November 2012, aged 75, was a theoretical physicist who made seminal contributions to the development of string theory and to our understanding of the structure of quantum field theory. In early work on S-matrix theory, he helped to provide the conceptual framework within which string theory was initially formulated. His work, with Gliozzi and Scherk, on supersymmetry in string theory made possible the whole idea of superstrings, now understood as the natural framework for string theory. Olive's pioneering insights about the duality between electric and magnetic objects in gauge theories were way ahead of their time; it took two decades before his bold and courageous duality conjectures began to be understood. Although somewhat quiet and reserved, he took delight in the company of others, generously sharing his emerging understanding of new ideas with students and colleagues. He was widely influential, not only through the depth and vision of his original work, but also because the clarity, simplicity and elegance of his expositions of new and difficult ideas and theories provided routes into emerging areas of research, both for students and for the theoretical physics community more generally. arXiv:2009.05849v1 [physics.hist-ph] 12 Sep 2020 [A version of section I Biography is to be published in the Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society.] I Biography Childhood David Olive was born on 16 April, 1937, somewhat prematurely, in a nursing home in Staines, near the family home in Scotts Avenue, Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey.

  • The Dancing Wu Li Masters an Overview of the New Physics Gary Zukav
The Dancing Wu Li Masters An Overview of the New Physics Gary Zukav A BANTAM NEW AGE BOOK BANTAM BOOKS NEW YORK • TORONTO • LONDON • SYDNEY • AUCKLAND This book is dedicated to you, who are drawn to read it. Acknowledgments My gratitude to the following people cannot be adequately expressed. I discovered, in the course of writing this book, that physicists, from graduate students to Nobel Laureates, are a gracious group of people; accessible, helpful, and engaging. This discovery shattered my long-held stereo- type of the cold, "objective" scientific personality. For this, above all, I am grateful to the people listed here. Jack Sarfatti, Ph.D., Director of the Physics/Consciousness Research Group, is the catalyst without whom the following people and I would not have met. Al Chung-liang Huang, The T'ai Chi Master, provided the perfect metaphor of Wu Li, inspiration, and the beautiful calligraphy. David Finkelstein, Ph.D., Director of the School of Physics, Georgia Institute of Technology, was my first tutor. These men are the godfathers of this book. In addition to Sarfatti and Finkelstein, Brian Josephson, Professor of Physics, Cambridge University, and Max Jammer, Professor of Physics, Bar-Ilan University, Ramat- Gan, Israel, read and commented upon the entire manu- script. I am especially indebted to these men (but I do not wish to imply that any one of them, or any other of the individualistic and creative thinkers who helped me with this book, would approve of it, page for page, as it is written, nor that the responsibility for any errors or mis- interpretations belongs to anyone but me).

  • Thunderbolts: Justice, Like Lightning Free
FREE THUNDERBOLTS: JUSTICE, LIKE LIGHTNING PDF Jeff Parker,Kev Walker | 136 pages | 19 Sep 2012 | Marvel Comics | 9780785161714 | English | New York, United States Thunderbolts Justice Like Lightning TPB ( Marvel) comic books I realize that Like Lightning was mostly continuing Thunderbolts: Justice series in the same vein that Busiek started, but I'm not sure Like Lightning you can write a Thunderbolts retrospective that completely ignores Fabian Nicieza, who wrote about one third of all Thunderbolts comics. But for the most part, I like a lot of what Nicieza did in the series from what I've seen. Unfortunately, certain trades are harder to track than others. But I may go back to through in his contributions just to be sure. Thanks for the reminder! Blog's back, I guess. So why not show off with an overview of a comic book team I am and remain to be a huge fan of: the Thunderbolts! In the mid to late 90s, Marvel was in a bad place. There are hundreds of videos and blogs that discuss this Like Lightning further Like Lightning and why but long story short, the company was going bankrupt and creatively they were in a really bad place. After an event involving the Avengers fighting the monster Onslaught, they disappeared probably a good thing considering their book was not doing well and were out of the public eye on their world, but really on a Like Lightning world because comics. But debuting in the Avengers' place on Earth were a team called the Thunderbolts. This team has Like Lightning quite a run in the comics world, with different creative teams and different ideas to explore the team.

  • Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances by Bob Wolniak
Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances By Bob Wolniak ased initially on the Bob Fronczak list from Avengers Assemble and Avengers Forever websites. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series.

Jocasta first appears in The Avengers vol. Jocasta appeared as a supporting character in Avengers Academy Aug Jan and made sporadic appearances throughout the remainder of the series, appearing regularly again in Avengers Academy Oct Jan Jocasta was built by the robot Ultron in an abandoned aerospace research center in Nassau, Long Island, New York, in order that Ultron might have a mate. To better allow this robot sentience, Ultron based her mind and brain patterns on the Wasp Janet van Dyne. To animate this bride, Ultron also brainwashed Hank Pym into transferring the Wasp's lifeforce into the feminine robotic shell. However, realizing that Wasp would have to die in order for her to live, Jocasta alerted the Avengers and the team defeated Ultron and reversed the process, leaving The Avengers: The Bride of Ultron a mindless husk. Pym retained custody of the inanimate Jocasta, intending to study her. Upon the urging of Wasp, Pym had her moved from their residence to the Avengers Mansion. There, Ultron revived Jocasta with a remote link, activating Wasp's mental "residue" left behind. She escaped from Avengers custody and led the Avengers into Ultron's trap. Jocasta was programmed to be loyal to Ultron. Even though she loved Ultron intensely, she could not abide by her master's evil.
