Despite his deteriorating condition, Solid Snake returns to action because everyone knows he is the only person who can get close to his twin. Snake proceeds to follow Liquid half way around the world, along the way meeting allies and uncovering the master plan of Liquid and learning of the origin of himself and his brother, their parents, and the Patriots, who seemingly control everything from world economy to the emotions of soldiers and control of every bullet fired. It is this power that Liquid is after. Snake, along with his allies Otacon, Meryl Silverburgh, and Raiden, stop at nothing to capture Liquid and save the world, including the ultimate act of self-sacrifice: death. A major theme in this game is self-sacrifice, which is displayed in the journey of the characters and the characters themselves. For example, when the game starts Snake looks to be in his 60s and is rapidly dying due to a disease, and yet he strikes out on one last mission in which he and his allies know full well there is no return. As well, at several points Snake must literally walk through fire, a symbol of what this mission really is: atonement for his brother’s actions and his own refusal to sacrifice for others throughout his entire life. -

Solid Snake is suffering from accelerated aging, and because of this appears much older than he actually is. Snake is tasked with trying to stop Liquid Ocelot, a former rival of Big Boss who used hypnotic suggestion to adopt the persona of a second, deceased clone of Big Boss named Liquid Snake. Liquid Ocelot’s goal is to take control of the Sons of the Patriots, a system that regulates all aspects of the economy and directly influences many people’s daily lives. One part of the Sons of the Patriots is a global system that is used to monitor soldier’s actions in order to regulate and control war zones under the pretense of “a safer, cleaner battlefield.” The military side of the Sons of the Patriots system controls everything from gun ID locks to the monitoring and regulation of soldier’s emotions in order to improve combat effectiveness and reduce the effects of PTSD via nanomachines. When Ocelot assumes control of the military part of the system, he gains the ability to disable the guns of forces that oppose him, and even shut off the nanomachines that buffer the effects of PTSD, resulting in seizures and sudden emotional trauma in his enemies. -

To formulate the procedural analysis, theories of language play by Crystal ideology of influence and ludonarrative model by Aarseth, wordplay in the gaming context by Paul, intended meaning level by Stiles, wordplay transmission by Winter-Froemel, game interface types by Stonehouse, and indexical storytelling by Fernández- Vara were applied as the theoretical foundation. To provide a vivid application of the proposed procedural analysis, wordplays appearing on game assets from Konami’s Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater were taken as examples of analysis. REDMOND DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad Valdivia, Chair Professor Isabel Molina Professor Antoinette Burton Professor Paula Treichler, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes two best-selling videogames, Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008) and Square Enix' Final Fantasy 12 (2006), as sites of contestation between commercial media corporations on the one hand, and communities of artists, consumers and non-commercial digital users on the other. I argue that Metal Gear Solid 4 rewrites the stealth espionage thriller into a critique of neoliberalism's financial speculations and neocolonial wars, while Final Fantasy 12 rewrites the fantasy role-playing videogame into a critique of the colonial and neocolonial legacies of fantasy and role-playing fiction. Using the tools of critical communications theory, postcolonial media studies, and digital media scholarship, I argue that these videogames narrate the struggle between neoliberalism (i.e. the ideology of late 20 th century market fundamentalism which exerted global hegemony during the thirty years from 1975 to 2005) and a wide range of anti-neoliberal social movements, developmental states (especially those of the BRIC nations, i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China), and non-commercial networks of digital production, distribution and consumption. I also argue that these videogames frame the politics of transnational media production and transnational audience reception in productive ways. -

They're demanding that the government turn over the remains of Big Boss and they say that if their demands are not met within 24 hours, they'll launch a nuclear weapon. You'll have two mission objectives. First, you're to rescue DARPA chief, Donald Anderson and the President of ArmsTech, Kenneth Baker. Both are being held as hostages. Secondly, you're to investigate whether or not the terrorists have the ability to make a nuclear strike... and stop them if they do. - What's the insertion method? We'll approach the disposal facility by sub. - And then? We'll launch a one-man SDV (swimmer delivery vehicle). After the SDV gets as close as it can, dispose of it. From there on you'll have to swim. High Tech Special Forces Unit FOX-HOUND. Your former unit... ...and one that I was a commander of. - So they're still around... There are six members of FOX-HOUND involved in this terrorist activity. Psycho Mantis, with his powerful psychic abilities. Sniper Wolf, the beautiful and deadly sharp-shooter. Decoy Octopus, master of disguise. Vulcan Raven, giant and shaman. And Revolver Ocelot, specialist in interrogation and a formidable gunfighter. And finally, in charge of them... FOX-HOUND's squad leader, Liquid Snake. - Liquid Snake? The man with the same code name as you. The nuclear weapons disposal facility covers the whole island. -

METAL GEAR SOLID PROLOGUE Outer Heaven Revolt (1995) A small, but powerfully armed nation called “Outer Heaven” emerges from deep within South Africa. NATO learns that they are designing a nuclear-equipped walking battle tank called “Metal Gear”, and they send in one of their best agents, Gray Fox. But, he is taken hostage, and they are forced to send in the newest member of FOX-HOUND, Solid Snake. He rescues Gray Fox and forces the surrender of Outer Heaven. As Solid Snake escapes, he is confronted by one man: Big Boss, the commander of FOX-HOUND. It seems that Outer Heaven was a mercenary company and Big Boss was the mastermind behind it. Big Boss had intentionally chosen his most inexperienced agent, Solid Snake, thinking he would fail, but he seriously miscalculated. After a fierce battle, Snake defeats Big Boss as Outer Heaven burns around him. Zanzibar Riot (1999) In 1999, Dr. Kio Marv, inventor of the oil refining microbe, OILIX, was taken hostage by Zanzibar, a heavily armed nation in central Asia ruled by a minority ethnic group. Zanzibar was planning to gain political and military hegemony over a world suffering under the cruel weight of a global energy crisis. Roy Campbell, the new commander of FOX-HOUND, called Solid Snake, now in retirement, back to active duty to infiltrate Zanzibar and recover Dr. Marv. Solid Snake made it past Zanzibar’s impressive steel wall and penetrated deep into its interior. Once inside he destroyed Metal Gear, which had been completed after being transported from Outer Heaven, and defeated Gray Fox, former member of FOX-HOUND and now leader of the Zanzibar mercenary corps. -
