Turner's acclaimed, original one-man show, Robert Frost Light and Dark on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015 at 7:30pm at the Boston University Dance Theater, 915 Commonwealth Ave. Boston, MA 02215. Hear the stories behind Frost's work, the tragedy as well as the humor, as he shares some of his most popular poems, including Mending Wall, Birches, Nothing Gold Can Stay, Late Walk, Desert Places, Road Not Taken, and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. The 70 minute show sold out its original presentation on the North Shore last year, and just filled the historic Frost Farm in Derry, NH to capacity. J.T. Turner is an award-winning professional actor, director and writer with credits on stage, screen and audio. A member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors Equity, he is also a his- torical re-enactor, touring in shows about Shakespeare, Frost, Dickens, C.S. Lewis and Aesop. He is founder and director of moonlight productions inc, a theater company dedi- cated to using theater as an outreach tool for children and teens, and Artistic Director of The Actors Company, a performing group working with non-profits. J.T. additionally serves as a professional fight choreographer, circus ringmaster, and public speaker. B.U. houses one of the nation’s most comprehensive collections of Frost memorabilia. Filozofski fakultet u Zadru Izvorni znanstveni članak Faculty o f Philosophy in Zadar Original scientific paper Primljeno. 1999_10_12 Received The senex archetype in Frost's poetry is used extensively, it serves him to portray three antithetical aspects of human condition, aspects characterized by both positive and negative categories. These categories are not portrayed as static divisions, but as poles dinamically and complexly interrelated. This paper examines three of Frost's works "Mending Wall", "An Old Man's Winter Night" and "Directive" as examples for the study of the paradoxical senex consciousness. While the archetypal senex figures in the "Directive" and "An Old Man's Winter Night" represent primarily the antithetical aspects of the nature of humans, the senex protagonists in the "Mending Wall" reflect the inherent binary oppositions and ambivalence within the contradictory and paradoxical world of humankind. Thus, we can say, that Frost's portrayal of the archetype of the senex acknowledges the symbolic paradigm of the human condition. I. Robert Frost has long been considered the "Wise Old Man" of American twentieth-century poets, not simply because of his public persona, or mask, but because, as I shall explore in this paper, so much of his poetry and the characters in his poetry manifest the temperament, nature, principles and ordering qualities of the senex archetype. Senex is the Latin word for old man (or old woman). Personifications of the archetype appear everywhere in Frost's work as the guide, judge, father, mentor, philosopher, literate farmer, king, ruler (President and Governor), preacher, hermit, outcast, exile and ogre.

    A Defensive Eye: Anxiety, Fear and Form in the Poetry of Robert Frost Lisa Hinrichsen Boston University This essay argues that Robert Frost’s poems enact a poetic and psychic process of displac- ing and managing generalized anxiety through converting it into object-specific fear. Drawing upon the psychoanalytical work of Sigmund Freud, Dominick LaCapra and Eric Santner, this essay analyzes how and why Robert Frost’s poems display a “defensive eye”: a self-protective relationship to the world dependent upon a continual switching of visual and linguistic perspectives that diffuses the pressures interior to the poem and cre- ates a “momentary stay against confusion.” Through close readings of “The Vantage Point,” “The Mending Wall,” “The Wood-Pile,” “The Fear,” “An Old Man’s Winter Night” and “A Considerable Speck,” the essay traces Frost’s visual preoccupation with boundaries, walls, doors, and frames that demarcate spatial limits, and describes how the poem negotiates the psychological and linguistic tension between containment and catharsis. This study seeks to demonstrate that nature provided Frost an objective background against which he could measure the validity of human experience and gain a fuller under- standing of it. The experiences examined with reference to the poetr include loneliness, anxiety, sorrow, and hope. Attention is given to the influence of Frost's philosophical skepticism upon his poetry. The study reveals that Frost discovered correspondences between nature and human experience which clarified his per- spective of existence. The experiences of loneliness, anxiety, and sorrow were found to relate to Frost's feeling of separation from nature and from the source of existence. Robert Frost is greatly misunderstood. Certain people, some academics and politicians included, have tried to pigeonhole him, however the man is far more complicated than the surface indicates. This is, after all, a man who voted for Eugene Debs, one of the best known Socialists of the United States, but was vehemently opposed to Franklin Roosevelt and "The New Deal". It is this man that is seen in his poems that are often dialectic between chaos and order. As part of the performance, an open discussion of the following poems will include: "A Tuft of Flowers" "Mending Wall" "Birches" "After Apple Picking" "Acquainted with the Night" "Desert Places" The performance closes with a dramatic reading of Frost's masterful use of blank prose in the hauntingly memorable "The Death of the Hired Man".     Frost of Pessimism Binoy Barman, PhD* Abstract Four-time Pulitzer winner Robert Frost (1874-1963) was arguably the most popular poet in the United States during the twentieth century, and still he retains his popularity not only in US but among the international audience, as a nature or pastoral poet with modern philosophical vision. His universal appeal is due to his sublime art, an act of clarification of life, which, without even simplifying the truth, makes him accessible to everyone. He drew his images in poetry from the New England countryside and his language from New England speech. Although his images and voice often seem familiar and old, his observations have a tinge of skepticism, which may not be evident in the first reading but need several attempts for discovery. In being both traditional and skeptical, Frost’s poetry provides a link between the English poetry of the 19th century and the American poetry of the 20th century. In the present article I have tried to establish Robert Frost as a pessimistic poet. I have examined a wide range of poetry composed by him and garnered instances for my thesis. I have argued that Frost’s poems appear simple at first glance, but reveal themselves to be subtle and enigmatic upon further scrutiny. His poetry harbors pessimism at the core. As I have observed, Frost’s pessimism has been expressed through the themes of death, decay, destruction, frustration, anxiety, loneliness and agony.     Welcome to Robert Frost's World and Words Professor Gary Bouchard A few years ago I developed a 100 level on-line summer course on Robert Frost for Saint Anselm students. To do so I teamed-up with talented videographer David Hjelm and traveled around New Hampshire to a few treasured locations from the poet’s life. Together we created a couple of dozen mini-lectures on Frost’s life and poems. In this peculiar time when we find ourselves in forced hibernation away from so many of the people and places we love, I wanted to do what I could to help lift you beyond your four walls into the world and imagination of one of New England and America’s most beloved poets. A unique figure in American poetry, Robert Frost is as complex as he is revered and mythologized. His voice and vision are inseparable from the New England landscape he inhabited, and his diction is as New Hampshire as granite ledge, birch trees, maple syrup, stone walls and accumulating snow. Most casual readers of poetry are acquainted with some of the more famous poems of Frost that are accessible to young readers. Beyond those dozen or so poems, Frost created a large body of work, including eight volumes of some of the most provocatively complex, metaphysical poems in American literature. Many of those poems are intricately connected to the landscapes, voices and imagination of New Hampshire. Together in this course we will travel on the road less taken. The lectures will bring you to his homes in Plymouth, Derry and Franconia, New Hampshire.
