Residents in the State Avenue area in Kansas City, KS were recently invited to a public meeting at St Patrick Parish Center at 94th & State. Steve Bachenberg, project manager from BHC Rhodes talked about the details of improvement along State Avenue from 73rd Street to 94th Street at the open house. The residents looked at drawings, talked with engineers and expressed their opinions about the plans. Benjamin Wolf, 16 year old son of Steve & Marsha, now owns his own IT7 race car! It is a white 1985 RX7 Mazda and he was preparing it so he could attend the MAM double drivers school. (Mom didn’t hear if he made it to the school or not). Benjamin is a sophomore at Shawnee Mission West high school and his “everyday wheels” is a blue 1991 Mazda RX7 convertible. Ben is following in the footsteps of his father, Steve and his grandfather, Marvin. One of the markers is an old governmentBus (913) issued 334-5000 head stone for Fax a (913)man 334-5005who served in the Civil War. Until the city cleared the brush off of the hill the marker was nearly invisible from either the cemetery or the road next to it. And it was just about ready to fallKeith down Kaufman the hill. Ken contacted the city via their website and got no response, then he sent a letter to the Wyandotte Daily News and still Silver Level Certificate no reaction. So Ken contacted Channel 4 Problem Solvers and they sent Ms Wagar and a cameraman out and they did a story on the head stones. Within a week and a half of the story airing, the headstones have been relocated to the “foot” of the graves next to the hillside - they aren’t exactly correct, but they are now stable and no longer pose a hazard to drivers on the street next to the cemetery. Problem solved. 4 Don’t look back……………………… 64055

MARCH 2013 MAY BIRTHDAYS Plans to attend the B.F.G Majors event at the Circuit of the Americas began in early 1 Tom Bootz January 2013 when the Lone Star Region first made the announcement. What had Nick Roberts been rumors and speculation became reality. My oldest sons were on top of all the 2 Elizabeth Holsworth d of Lenard & Mary details from the beginning which made things much easier for me. Betty Ruckman 4 Jeff Madden I am a 43 year member of SCCA. I have never registered for a race event that opened Scott Peterson and closed the same day and close within an hour and a half of its opening. There 5 Lauren Anderson were 520 entries. Six of the seven race groups were fully subscribed. As you might 6 Bob Buxbaum have expected there were all sorts of issues with the SM and SRF race groups. Both Sonja Hitchcock groups eventually ended up having to go through a lottery to provide “fairness” to the Ryan Christopher Hofmeister whole process. 7 Adam Asselta (15) s of Mike & Lynnet Annie Berg COTA is about ten miles from downtown Austin, Texas. To get to the track from our Michael Lyle motel involved driving about half the distance on a toll road. From where we got on the 8 Canon Kopp (16) s of Jeff & Sandy toll road to the exit point there were four express toll stations. (Express means a pic- Ella Christine Wolf (3) grd of Victor & Ellen ture of your license plate is recorded and they send you the bill.) With as many times 9 Jana Hitchcock (10) d of Doug & Sonja as we went back and forth for a variety of reasons I’m not looking forward to the bill. Willard King 11 Michael Farley The “ski tower” as many called it is visible for about two miles away as you drive south 12 John Strickler on the toll road. It doesn’t look like much until you see it from inside the track. It’s 13 Robert Charlesworth Meghan Burke (14) especially interesting as the colors of red, white and blue change at night. When you grd of Dick & Peggy White enter the main gate of COTA there is building which is marked in very large letters 14 Neava Ford Circuit of the Americas. There is no doubt you are about to enter a world class racing Bill D Miller facility. The building has two floors of about 150 suites with very fancy garages on the 17 Jordan Allen d of Jim & Michelle ground level. In front of that building was where the SCCA registration was centered. Nick Greusel 18 Suzanne Berger The weekend began with test day on Wednesday. You were only allowed one of the 19 Jarold Boettcher two days of testing. My first time out was anything but fun. My first off was turn three. Georgia Finks My second off was turn seven followed by an off on turn fifteen and then twenty. My Aaron Thomas Holstrom (5) second lap was about like the first. Eight laps later I just kept missing turn three and s of Aaron & Melissa twenty. By the end of the day I kind of had a semi foggy view of the track in my head. Brielle Magee Andy Sundeen Looking at a map of the track is deceiving. The elevation gain between turn twenty 20 Pasquale Trozzolo and turn one is about 350 feet or perhaps a bit more. The drop off between one and 21 Katelyn Peter d of Hans & Susan three is about equal to that of turn twenty to turn one. Once you enter turn three the 22 LeRoy F Brown III climb begins again all the way to turn eleven where the you begin the l-o-n-g trip to Pete Schulte twelve. The GT 1 cars were clocked at 150 to 165 mph. 23 Barbara Correll 24 Andrew Conley s of Steve & Marsha Wolf The second most difficult part of the track begins with turn twelve which is a ninety Hannah Conley d of Steve & Marsha Wolf degree left hander. Turns thirteen to eighteen are a series if double apexes requiring 25 Pat Webb 26 Hans Peter some intense concentration to get them right. If all goes well, getting through nineteen Ned Keyuravong is a matter of throttle management. Entry into twenty requires hard braking and an 27 Ashley Asselta d of Mike & Lynnet early entry in order to maintain momemtum for a good run up the hill into one. Chris Coulter 28 Norman Dively Overall the Lone Star Region did a good job with registration and making the com- 29 Ryan Davis (14) grs of Chuck petitors feel welcome. With so many cars in each group, time management became 30 Jeff Jenkins a problem. As an example, the Group 7 race (ground pounders) on Saturday didn’t happen. They were the first and last race of the day Sunday. And the track time we MAY were suppose to have Sunday morning was eliminated. Hence, the fastest race lap ANNIVERSARIES Saturday became your grid spot Sunday. Removing disable cars was painfully slow. That task was handled by local fire fighters who did the job like they were working on 3 Bert & Donna Swift - 33 years the street. 4 Bill & Beth (White) Burke - 17 years 6 Chuck & Sue Woloscsuk - 19 years At the outset of the weekend COTA management stated they would consider the 13 Keith & Cheryl Williams - 18 years SCCA weekend a learning experience. They closed the meeting with a promise to 15 Rodney & Tammy Giebel - 32 years listen and implement whatever changes would benefit future SCCA race weekends. 17 Steve & Karin Roberts - 38 years So, I’ll begin saving a portion of my monthly Social Security check in hopes of going 22 Peter & Lenora Wilke - 37 years 25 David & Melissa Bennett - 11 years back to COTA next year. It was truly a great experience. 26 Mike & Kathy (White) Brindley - 23 years Chuck Davis 31 Shawn & Holi Hill - 10 years
