How Can Institutions Better Explain Political Trust Than Social Capital Does?
How can institutions better explain political trust than social capital does? Ylva Noren Bretzer Department of Political Science University of Gothenburg Box 711 505 30 GOTHENBURG SWEDEN E-MAIL: [email protected] Prepared for delivery at the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association Meeting, August 29 - September 1. Copyright by the American Political Science Association. Ylva Noren Bretzer, University of Gothenburg ! APSA 2002 Abstract Sweden is an excellent environment to set out a test in: if there's any place we should find a relationship between political trust and social capital it would be here. Having had the last wars at the beginning of the 1800s, Sweden has been a very fertile ground for active popular movements and a vibrant civil society. The crucial question today is, whither there is a connection between lowered political trust in society and activities in these movements and associations. The article examines Robert D. Putnam's claim that social capital spurs the [political] trust in society, but also tests a counter claim. That is, only when we find trustworthy judicial institutions, practicing just and fair procedures, the citizens can relax and feel secure enough to devote time to develop networks of social capital and trust. The tests are carried out on basically three different levels: national, local and on aggregate municipal. The results are proving that in terms of interpersonal trust, Putnam is right. Persons having a higher trust in other people, are also more likely to carry higher political trust. In terms of associational membership and activism, social capital does not explain political trust. -
An Investigation of Resources and Competencies in Rural Retailers Bachelor Thesis, 2FE10E 15 Credits, Spring 2013
An investigation of resources and competencies in rural retailers Bachelor thesis, 2FE10E 15 credits, spring 2013 Group 1 2013-05-22 Tutor: Michaela Sandell Examiner: Setayesh Sattari Henric Gustavsson [email protected] Sofia Kokacka [email protected] Sophia Lavasani [email protected] Abstract The last decades has demonstrated a decline in rural trade and an extensive closure of rural stores. As rural stores not only provide rural inhabitants with important service functions and groceries but also constitutes as the basis for a vivid countryside, it is of importance to preserve and develop these. According to the resource based view, the deployment of internal resources and capabilities can lead to competitive advantage and therefore it is of interest to investigate the resources and competencies possessed by rural retailers. Hence, the purpose of the report: From a resource based view, investigate internal resources and competencies for rural retailers, with focus on marketing and entrepreneurship. Based on a review of existing literature, a conceptual model was conducted for this study. The conceptual model suggests that Marketing in SMEs, Services in SMEs, Human- and social capital in SMEs as well as Corporate entrepreneurship in SMEs are all influential for how rural retailers utilise their resources and competencies. For this thesis a multiple-case study was carried out in form of semi-structured interviews with four rural retailers located in the county of Kronoberg. The findings of this research reveal that marketing techniques combined with entrepreneurial thinking had a greater effect on diffusion, than when marketing techniques were practised in isolation. Moreover, services in relation to social capital were also enhanced when combined, rather than standing alone. -

Deliverable 4.4 Summary report on urban energy planning: Potentials and barriers in six cities 3 November 2015 Authors UCPH: Christian Fertner*, Juliane Große, Niels Boje Groth TU Delft: Evert J. Meijers, Arie Romein, Ana Maria Fernandez Maldonado, Roberto Rocco, Stephen Read * Contact: [email protected] www.pleecproject.eu Abstract Main aim of report This is the final report (Delivera‐ ble 4.4) of PLEEC’s work package 4, dealing with urban / spatial planning and energy. It focuses on the (potential) application of measures and policies in urban planning to improve the energy performance of cities. Summaries and recommendations for each of the six PLEEC cities are given. WP4 location in PLEEC project Target group The main addressees are the PLEEC partner cities, Eskilstuna (SE), Jyväskylä (FI), Santi‐ ago de Compostela (ES), Stoke‐on‐Trent (UK), Tartu (EE) and Turku (FI). However, con‐ cepts and ideas discussed here are also relevant for many other cities and this is also emphasized in the report. The Deliverable is therefor also a direct input to Deliverable 6.1, which will provide a general model for the Energy‐Smart City. The report can also be used as a more general reference for planning practitioners, researchers and the inter‐ ested public. Main findings/conclusions Based on the case study (Deliverables 4.2) as well as the thematic (Deliverable 4.3) work, a list of 29 spatial planning measures and policies was elaborated. The measures can increase energy efficiency, reduce energy use or increasing the share of renewable energy in a city. The table shows the four sectors, as used in the Thematic Report, and nine related goals. -
