Photo: Meg Winen Christine Putland – Research Consultant April 2015 About This Report In 2012 the Alexandrina Council hosted the third Regional Centre of Culture (RCC) program in South Australia, the previous two having been held in Port Augusta (2008) and Murray Bridge (2010). Managed by Country Arts SA on behalf of the South Australian government, the RCC model aimed to contribute to building a strong and resourceful community and improving wellbeing through arts and cultural development. In Alexandrina the program was named Just Add Water, reflecting the community’s unique and precious relationship with the rivers, lakes, sea and wetlands in the region. Country Arts SA commissioned an independent evaluation of the 2012 program documenting the many positive outcomes for the community. The 2012 Evaluation Report by Dr Christine Putland can be found on the website here. Based on the success of Just Add Water in 2012 it was nominated for a further two years funding by the Australia Council for the Arts, Cultural Places Initiative as one of two pilots, the other being Rockhampton in Queensland. A further evaluation of Just Add Water until the end of 2014 was undertaken to ascertain progress towards the goals of the Cultural Places Initiative. This Report supplements the 2012 findings and is based on the evaluation conducted during 2014 by Dr Christine Putland. Scientists nail quail mystery 23 October 2009 found quail on Tiritiri Matangi to be genetically identical to the Australian brown quail. As a result of the study, some museums around the world will have to rename their exhibits of quail, with Coturnix pectoralis (Australian stubble quail) previously labelled as Coturnix novaezelandiae. The New Zealand quail was once widespread throughout the country but declined rapidly in the mid-1800s as a result of large-scale deforestation and predation by dogs, cats and rats, and was declared extinct by 1875. SA River Murray below Lock 1 community profile Irrigation region 1. The region — This regional profile covers the area of South Australia below Lock 1 on the River Murray. This includes the 210km stretch of the River Murray from Lock 1 south to Wellington, as well as the Lower Lakes. The region is famous for the Murray Mouth, Lakes Alexandrina and Albert, and the Coorong, recognised as among Australia’s most significant Ramsar listed wetlands. They are also of central significance for the life and culture of the Ngarrindjeri people. 2. The people of the region — The region below Lock 1 has a population of around 33,000.i Of these, 17,000 live in Murray Bridge, the largest town in the region. Goolwa has a population of around 7,000, Mannum 2,500, with Tailem Bend around 1,600, Meningie at 1,500 and Langhorne Creek at just over 1,000. There are a wide range of smaller communities across the region around the lakes including important Indigenous communities, for example at Raukkan (Point McLeay). 3. Major enterprises — The main employment is in agriculture, both irrigated (winegrapes, horticulture and dairy) and dryland (dairy, beef, sheep and cropping,) and in retail trade. Manufacturing is also important for food processing and wineries, with the abattoir in Murray Bridge employing 1,500 people. Tourism and boating generate considerable employment as do education and health services. Murray Bridge is a thriving centre with major growth projected in employment and housing due partly to its proximity to Adelaide. 4. Gross value of irrigated agricultural production — For 2006-07 the drought affected Gross Value of Irrigated Agricultural Production in the wider region below Lock 1 was $166 million. -

Mitchell2 1Division of Zoology, University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales 2351 (Email: [email protected]) 217 Kyooma Street, Hillvue, New South Wales 2340 Received: 10 May 2017 The breeding biology and behaviour of the Black Falcon Falco subniger were studied in the Tamworth district (northern inland NSW) through 146 hours of observation over 47 days in 2015 (one pair, pre-laying to early incubation) and 261 hours of observation over 69 days in 2016 (four pairs, pre-laying to fledging, with checks through the post-fledging period). Pellets were collected from under vacated nests. Aerial displays (e.g. agility, V-dives, ‘undulatory roll,’ ‘high winnowing’), nest-site selection and occupation, courtship and mating are described. Adopted stick nests were high in tall or emergent riparian or paddock eucalypts; nearest-neighbour distances averaged 10.25 km (range 9– 12 km). Eggs were laid in July, and incubation appeared to take 34 ± 1 days at one nest. Males took a minor share of incubation (1–3% of daylight) and brooding of hatchlings (1%). Interspecific conflict or defence was strongest against corvids in the pre-laying phase, and against Wedge-tailed Eagles Aquila audax during the nestling phase. Feeding rates and estimated biomass provision were 0.09– 0.26 item/h and ~4–28 g/h at nests that failed during the incubation or hatchling phase, and 0.19 item/h and ~23 g/h to a single nestling that fledged underweight. -

NSW SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Black-breasted Button-quail Turnix melanogaster Review of Current Information in NSW May 2008 Current status: The Black-breasted Button-quail Turnix melanogaster is currently listed as Vulnerable in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NC Act), and as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The NSW Scientific Committee recently determined that the Black-breasted Button- quail meets criteria for listing as Critically Endangered in NSW under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act), based on information contained in this report and other information available for the species. Species description: The Black-breasted Button-quail is a small (19 cm in length) quail-like bird, though among the largest of the Australian quail and button-quail. It is dumpy, almost tail-less, mottled and streaked in black, brown, grey and white, with short wings, short yellow legs, and distinctive white eyes. The female is black on the head and spangled black and white on the foreparts, but the male is mottled grey on these parts. The similar Painted Button-quail Turnix varia has red eyes and is more reddish brown dorsally, particularly on the neck, which is rusty. Other button-quail in NSW are much smaller and redder. True quail are more streaked, and are either richer brown with red eyes (e.g. Brown Quail Coturnix ypsilophora), or have a rusty throat above the black-streaked breast, and red eyes (e.g. male Stubble Quail Coturnix pectoralis). True quail have a small hind-toe, lacking in button-quail which have only three, forward-pointing toes. -
