Photo: Meg Winen Christine Putland – Research Consultant April 2015 About This Report In 2012 the Alexandrina Council hosted the third Regional Centre of Culture (RCC) program in South Australia, the previous two having been held in Port Augusta (2008) and Murray Bridge (2010). Managed by Country Arts SA on behalf of the South Australian government, the RCC model aimed to contribute to building a strong and resourceful community and improving wellbeing through arts and cultural development. In Alexandrina the program was named Just Add Water, reflecting the community’s unique and precious relationship with the rivers, lakes, sea and wetlands in the region. Country Arts SA commissioned an independent evaluation of the 2012 program documenting the many positive outcomes for the community. The 2012 Evaluation Report by Dr Christine Putland can be found on the website here. Based on the success of Just Add Water in 2012 it was nominated for a further two years funding by the Australia Council for the Arts, Cultural Places Initiative as one of two pilots, the other being Rockhampton in Queensland. A further evaluation of Just Add Water until the end of 2014 was undertaken to ascertain progress towards the goals of the Cultural Places Initiative. This Report supplements the 2012 findings and is based on the evaluation conducted during 2014 by Dr Christine Putland. STATEMENT OF HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE The Rosetta Head Well and Whaling Station Site is on the lands and waters of the Ramindjeri people of the lower Fleurieu Peninsula, who are a part of the Ngarrindjeri Nation. The site represents a once significant early industry that no longer exists in South Australia. Founded by the South Australian Company in 1837 and continually operating until 1851, it was the longest-running whaling station in the State. It played an important role in the establishment of the whaling industry in South Australia as a prototype for other whaling stations and made a notable contribution to the fledgling colony’s economic development. The Rosetta Head Whaling Station is also an important contact site between European colonists and the Ramindjeri people. To Ramindjeri people, the whale is known as Kondli (a spiritual being), and due to their connection and knowledge, a number of Ramindjeri were employed at the station as labourers and boat crews. Therefore, Rosetta Head is one of the first places in South Australia where European and Aboriginal people worked side by side. -

i Anthropogenic impacts on Waituna Lagoon: Reconstructing the environmental history Sarai Cosgrove 2011 A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a Master of Science degree in Ecology at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand ii iii Abstract Waituna Lagoon is a shallow temperate coastal lagoon in Southland, New Zealand. The 1,350 hectare Waituna Lagoon and associated wetland system is of national and international importance for its unique ecology and the cultural values placed upon it. Waituna is opened to the sea ca. 1-2 times annually, during which time it becomes estuarine. This opening regime has been artificially managed since 1908, with an unknown impact on the lagoon. Since 2007, Waituna appears to have experienced rapid degradation and eutrophication, possibly due to intensification of farming in its catchment. It has rare, extensive beds of the seagrasses Ruppia megacarpa and Ruppia polycarpa, which have been lost from many similar systems due to eutrophication and sedimentation. Waituna Lagoon is currently under active management to preserve its unique ecology, and its restoration to a more natural state is being considered. This study aims to reconstruct Waituna Lagoon’s natural opening regime and Ruppia dynamics, as understanding the natural ecosystem is important for restoration. The hypotheses are: (1) that under a natural opening regime, environmental variations within Waituna Lagoon were less frequent but more extreme; (2) that Ruppia was not present in Waituna Lagoon under a natural opening regime; and (3) that Ruppia was not dominant in Waituna Lagoon under a natural opening regime. Three push cores (130, 83 and 64 cm length) were collected from the sheltered Shand Bay and from the wind-exposed, deepest site in the main lagoon. -

Daru) Running head: Phylogenetic regionalization of seagrasses 1 Abstract While our knowledge of species distributions and diversity in the terrestrial biosphere has increased sharply over the last decades, we lack equivalent knowledge of the marine world. Here, we use the phylogenetic tree of seagrasses along with their global distributions and a metric of phylogenetic beta diversity to generate a phylogenetically-based delimitation of marine phytoregions (phyloregions). We then evaluate their evolutionary affinities and explore environmental correlates of phylogenetic turnover between them. We identified 11 phyloregions based on the clustering of phylogenetic beta diversity values. Most phyloregions can be classified as either temperate or tropical, and even geographically disjunct temperate regions can harbor closely related species assemblages. -

Evaluation of the Host Range of Hydrellia Lagarosiphon
Host range tests of Hydrellia lagarosiphon a candidate agent for Lagarosiphon major in New Zealand: assessing the risk to non-target species in New Zealand Jan-Robert Baars (University College Dublin), Quentin Paynter (Landcare Research New Zealand) Materials and Methods Selection of test plants A test plant list for New Zealand (henceforth NZ) (Table 1) was compiled using the centrifugal phylogenetic method (Wapshere, 1974) with amendments, as suggested by Briese and Walker (2002) and Briese (2003). Recent development in phylogenetics for the Hydrocharitaceae and its relation to taxonomically similar plant families were obtained by consulting the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website (Stevens, 2001 onwards; Fig. 1). Figure 1 Phylogeny of the Alismatales obtained from the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website: (Stevens, 2001 onwards) The most recent checklist of native NZ plants (De Lange and Rolfe, 2010) was examined to identify the NZ plant species that are most closely-related to lagarosiphon in order to compile a list of native plants for inclusion in host-range testing. Given that the aquatic lifestyle is a highly specialised one, relying totally on taxonomic position without due consideration of habitat has the potential to result in unsuitable test plants being included in a test list. For example, arthropod herbivores that feed on lagarosiphon are adapted to being submerged in freshwater and we can be sure that the marine eelgrass Zostera muelleri (Zosteriaceae) cannot be a suitable host for an insect herbivore because no insects have followed seagrasses into the ocean (Ollerton and McCollin, 1998). Zostera muelleri was, therefore, excluded from host- range testing. Wolffia australiana was also excluded from host-range testing as the tiny (0.3-1 mm long) platelets are far too small to be at risk of supporting the development of a leaf- mining fly.
