Malcolm Smith sailed very consistently to win the 1999 Sunfish North American Championship at Hyannis, Massachusetts, Inaugural Event for Sunfish!!! June 19th-25th. 103 sailors enjoyed perfect New England summer weather with breezes that increased as the week progressed. Canadian Oskar ]ohannson Wins in Gimli David Van Cleef, cashing in the good karma he earned by diving under the pin boat to cut the anchor line out of the wheel, won the first two races in a 5-8 knot southwester. Local favorite Paul Fendler won the third race to move into the lead at the end of the first day. Steve Evans immortalized himself in the third race as he arrived at the leeward mark in the top five, capsized, and then righted the boat with the four foot, bright yellow tetrahedron firmly affixed to the top of his mast. As he sat there anchored to the bottom sporting a colorful top sail, the whole fleet rounded him before he managed to extricate himself from the mark and the ground tackle. · The wind picked up to 10-18 the second day. You may have to raise the line bags to locate the eyestraps. Make sure your knot is very tight; shockcord easily unties itself. Assembling the mast The mast comes already rigged except for the spreaders, which are taped to the mast. Remove all tape, and untie the halyards; secure them loosely around the mast so they won’t be lost when stepping. Before you install the spreaders, make sure the hoist end of the main halyard (which comes off the aft side of the masthead sheave) is aft of the spreader brackets and all other rigging is forward.
