Malcolm Smith sailed very consistently to win the 1999 Sunfish North American Championship at Hyannis, Massachusetts, Inaugural Event for Sunfish!!! June 19th-25th. 103 sailors enjoyed perfect New England summer weather with breezes that increased as the week progressed. Local favorite Paul Fendler won the third race to move into the lead at the end of the first day. Steve Evans immortalized himself in the third race as he arrived at the leeward mark in the top five, capsized, and then righted the boat with the four foot, bright yellow tetrahedron firmly affixed to the top of his mast.
