We awoke at about six in the morning, packed up our tent and were ready to maintain first place. But first, we had a good breakfast. The first race started at 8:30; and after a good start, finished in second. The last race started at about 10:30, and we needed to stay in first place to win. We were cruising along in first place the whole race until our only competitor zoomed past us. We, naturally, thought our goal of first place had just sailed on by. Luckily for us, not only had he sailed past us, but he unknowingly had, also sailed way past the finish line. After almost twenty years (nineteen to be exact) the South Americans were sailed again. The last time they were held in Ancon near Lima, Peru, in January 1980 and after that for one reason or another the championship was postponed time and again. The class lost its strength and, except for Venezuela, was practically Sunfish South American's at Lake Tomin 1, Guativita, Colombia forgotten by the South American countries. Then around 1993 it began to revive in Colombia thanks to the unbelievable enthusiasm of a group of people headed by Luis Eduardo Baron; they organized regattas, pushed for the renewal of the fleet and most important of all, got young people involved in sailing and racing the boat thereby creating a very robust class out of practically nothing. All this, due also to the successful inclusion of the class in the Pan Am Games. It's a wonderful story that deserves to be told but that is beyond the scope of this article. Seven countries including Cuba were present, too bad the Ecuadorians were unable to make it at the last moment, but they will surely be around next time.
