    Off the Grid Off-grid isn’t a state of mind. It isn’t about someone being out of touch, about a place that is hard to get to, or about a weekend spent offline. Off-grid is the property of a building (generally a home but sometimes even a whole town) that is disconnected from the electricity and the natural gas grid. To live off- grid, therefore, means having to radically re-invent domestic life as we know it, and this is what this book is about: individuals and families who have chosen to live in that dramatically innovative, but also quite old, way of life. This ethnography explores the day-to-day existence of people living off- the-grid in each Canadian province and territory. Vannini and Taggart demonstrate how a variety of people, all with different environmental con- straints, live away from contemporary civilization. The authors also raise important questions about our social future and whether off-grid living cre- ates an environmentally and culturally sustainable lifestyle practice. These homes are experimental labs for our collective future, an intimate look into unusual contemporary domestic lives, and a call to the rest of us leading ordinary lives to examine what we take for granted. He spent 2 years in Cambodia. Five years into the Vietnam War, in the time of Diem's oppression of non-Catholic religeon, and one month after a violent suppression of street protesters, where nine died, who had marched the buddhist flag past Radio Hue after a ban on that flag days before the birthday of the Buddha, and in the wake of the encouragement of the flying of the Vatican flag in celebration of Diem's brother, the Archbishop. In front of the Cambodian embassy in Saigon, a procession of 350 monks and nuns holding up banners printed in Vietnamese and English condemning Diem's government, walked in two phalanges, led by an Austin sedan, from a nearby pagoda. In front of the embassy the two phalanges formed mulitple layers of a circle around senior monk Duc and two other monks, who emerged from the car. One placed a cushion on the road and the other took a 5-gallon drum from the trunk. Duc seated himself in lotus, and the monk emptied the gas over his head. Duc recited Namo Amitabha Buddha over a string of beads and stuck a match and self immolated.

Dissertation Advisor: Professor Alexander Rehding Olivia Rose Lucas Loudness, Rhythm and Environment: Analytical Issues in Extreme Metal Abstract Extreme metal music, with its consummate loudness and distortion, and intransigent culture of transgressiveness, resists analysis. This dissertation embraces extreme metal’s liveliness and channels it toward a broad cultural and musical analysis, exploring avenues of loudness, rhythm and ecocriticism. The study of extreme metal opens a window on liminal auralities, allowing the listener to encounter the thresholds of listening and the sheer physicality of sound. These aspects of the extreme metal listening experience open up a broader range of issues: the effects of loudness on the body and mind, the convergent mental and physical experiences of rhythmic complexity, and the sounding out of the often troubled relationship between humans and the natural world. This research assessed how the VS movement interacts with modern America through the application of the lens of modernity to both America in general and then VS. This thesis then utilized surveys to obtain information on the ranked intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, as well as the extrinsic barriers that both compel and repel both potential American simplifiers and non-American simplifiers from making this type of lifestyle transition.

Johnson Chair of the supervisory committee: Professor Linda L. Nash History This dissertation examines the history of solar energy technology alongside broad changes in the politics and geography of energy since the nineteenth century. I argue that solar technologies evolved as expressions of the anxieties of the fossil fuel age which, while never widely adopted, informed a persistent cultural interest in alternative energy futures that shaped larger developments in energy politics. I link the evolution of common types of solar technologies and ideas about their potential to four additional contexts: late nineteenth and early twentieth century imperial expansion, the advent of the Cold War, the convergence of environmentalism and the energy crisis in the 1970s, and the more recent emergence of sustainability as a framework for global energy and environmental politics. In each of these contexts, solar technologies developed as instruments of politics as well as forms of politics in their own right, reflecting and contributing to new conceptions of the limitations of fossil fuel dependence and the promise of alternatives. I also address the geographic dimensions of solar politics in each of these periods. My focus on California primarily, but also Arizona, North Africa, and – in the chapter on photovoltaic cells – outer space, reflects the importance of these places as nexuses in the development and global travel of solar technologies.
