“Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way. -
Thinking Plague a History Of
What the press has said about: THINKING PLAGUE A HISTORY OF MADNESS CUNEIFORM 2003 lineup: Mike Johnson (guitars & such), Deborah Perry (singing), Dave Willey (bass guitar & accordions), David Shamrock (drums & percussion), Mark Harris (saxes, clarinet, flute), Matt Mitchell (piano, harmonium, synths) - Guests: Kent McLagan (acoustic bass), Jean Harrison (fiddle), Ron Miles (trumpet), David Kerman (drums and percussion), Leslie Jordan (voice), Mark McCoin (samples and various exotica) “It has been 20 years since Rock In Opposition ceased to exist as a movement in any official sense… Nevertheless, at its best this music can be stimulating and vital. It’s only RIO, but I like it. Carrying the torch for these avant Progressive refuseniks are Thinking Plague, part of a stateside Cow-inspired contingent including 5uu’s and Motor Totemist Guild. These groups have…produced some extraordinary work… Their music eschews the salon woodwinds and cellos of the European groups for a more traditional electric palette, and its driving, whirlwind climaxes show a marked influence of King Crimson and Yes, names to make their RIO granddaddies run screaming from the room. …this new album finds the group’s main writer Mike Johnson in [an] apocalyptic mood, layering the pale vocals of Deborah Perry into a huge choir of doom, her exquisitely twisted harmonies spinning tales of war, despair and redemption as the music becomes audaciously, perhaps absurdly, complex. … Thinking Plague are exciting and ridiculous in equal measure, as good Prog rock should be.” - Keith Moliné, Wire, Issue 239, January 2004 “Thinking Plague formed in 1983…after guitarist and main composer Mike Johnson answered a notice posted by Bob Drake for a guitarist into “Henry Cow, Yes, etc.” …these initial influences are still prominent in the group’s sound - along with King Crimson, Stravinsky, Ligeti, Art Bears, and Univers Zero. -

Historical Development, Sound Aesthetics and Production Techniques of Metal’S Distorted Electric Guitar
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Huddersfield Repository Historical development, sound aesthetics and production techniques of metal’s distorted electric guitar Jan-Peter Herbst Abstract The sound of the distorted electric guitar is particularly important for many metal genres. It contributes to the music’s perception of heaviness, serves as a distinguishing marker, and is crucial for the power of productions. This article aims to extend the research on the distorted metal guitar and on metal music production by combining both fields of interest. By the means of isolated guitar tracks of original metal recordings, 10 tracks in each of the last five decades served as sample for a historical analysis of metal guitar aesthetics including the aspects tuning, loudness, layering and spectral composition. Building upon this insight, an experimental analysis of 287 guitar recordings explored the effectiveness and effect of metal guitar production techniques. The article attempts to provide an empirical ground of the acous- tics of metal guitar production in order to extend the still rare practice-based research and metal-ori- ented production manuals. Keywords: guitar, distortion, heaviness, production, history, aesthetics Introduction With the exception of genres like black metal that explicitly value low-fidelity aesthetics (Ha- gen 2011; Reyes 2013), the powerful effect of many metal genres is based on a high production quality. For achieving the desired heaviness, the sound of the distorted electric guitar is partic- ularly relevant (Mynett 2013). Although the guitar’s relevance as a sonic icon and its function as a distinguishing marker of metal’s genres have not changed in metal history (Walser 1993; Weinstein 2000; Berger and Fales 2005), the specific sound aesthetics of the guitar have varied substantially. -

Throughout history, art rejoices and revels in the wisdom of women. Within a deck of tarot cards, the High Priestess serves as the guardian of the unconscious. In Greek mythology, the old oracles celebrate the Mother Goddess. William Shakespeare posited portentous prescience in the form of MacBeth’s “Three Witches.” On their sixth full-length album Ritual, In This Moment—Maria Brink [vocals, piano], Chris Howorth [lead guitar], Travis Johnson [bass], Randy Weitzel [rhythm guitar], and Kent Diimel [drums]—unearth a furious and focused feminine fire from a cauldron of jagged heavy metal, hypnotic alternative, and smoky voodoo blues. It’s an evolution. It’s a statement. It’s In This Moment 2017… “It’s like we’re going into the next realm,” asserts Maria. “I had a conviction of feeling empowered in my life and with myself. I always write from a personal place, and I needed to share that sense of strength. I’ve never been afraid to hold back. Sometimes, I can be very suggestive. However, I wanted to show our fans that this is the most powerful side of myself and it’s without overt sexuality. It’s that deeper serious fire inside of my heart.” “What Maria is saying comes from deep inside,” Chris affirms. “This time, we had a bunch of ideas started before we hit the studio. There was a really clear direction. It’s different.” The group spent two years supporting their biggest album yet 2014’s Black Widow. Upon release, it seized their highest position to date on the Billboard Top 200, bowing at #8. -

The Rite of Spring: Rhythmic Rebirths As Delivered by Messiaen and Boulez
Te Rite of Spring: Rhythmic Rebirths as Delivered by Messiaen and Boulez* Wai Ling Cheong A century has passed since Te Rite of Spring (Le sacre du printemps) provoked a riot at the Téâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913 and harvested a captivating success from the Parisian audience soon after wards.1 Some of the best minds of our times, Messiaen and Boulez foremost among them, attempted to unravel the ‘secrets’ of Te Rite of Spring, with rhythm prioritised as one of their main concerns. Even be- fore the end of World War II, during the difcult years of the Occupa- tion, Messiaen had already shared his pioneering study of Te Rite of Spring with his star students from the Paris Conservatoire at a private analysis class.2 Messiaen’s insightful analysis of Te Rite of Spring is often praised in a vacuum. For a very long time the details of Messiaen’s anal- ysis were known rather exclusively only to his students. In 1953 Boulez, then in his late twenties, published his exegesis of Te Rite of Spring – Stravinsky Remains (Strawinsky demeure) – which soon became one of his best known analyses and has since then left an indelible imprint on the reception history of the masterpiece.3 Te lack of any formal documen- * Tis project (CUHK14613417) is supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. 1 According to Jonathan Cross, Sergey Diaghilev had assumed a critical role in engi- neering the riotous premiere. Press Release
Lausanne, February 4, 2013 Press release This year, the original production of the Inferno Festival Switzerland will be the WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN project aiming at uniting the Norwegian and Swiss cultural and musical traditions in the unique venue of the Chillon Castle. Get prepared for the amazing original and firm favourite production of the Inferno Festival Switzerland 2013, WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN, on March 14, 2013. This project featuring Swiss Alphorns and Norwegian traditional instruments such as horns (Neverlur), percussions, flutes and vocals will be presented exclusively at the Inferno Festival Switzerland in the unique venue of the Chillon Castle (Montreux). About the project’s originators WARDRUNA is a Norwegian musical project based on ancient Nordic beliefs and rune traditions. Led by its frontman Einar Selvik and Gaahl (ex Gorgoroth, God Seed), the project is set out to make musical interpretations of various themes in the pre-christian Scandinavian traditions, using contemporary and other relevant instruments and techniques sending us back to Vikings legends and poems. Thanks to contemporary sonorities (for ex. samples) and a modern approach, WARDRUNA reaches a large audience allowing a better understanding of some of the influences that shaped Scandinavian rock. At the occasion of the Inferno 2013, the band will also play on the stage of the DOCKS on March 15, 2013. They will present their new album «Runaljod – Yggdrasil» as a world premiere and in the band’s basic formation (without Swiss Alphorns). Unite the culture and the tradition of horn of Switzerland and Norway By inviting Swiss Alphorn musicians into WARDRUNA’s Norse instrumentation, this project aims at bridging Switzerland and Norway together, two countries made of mountains, forests and glaciers where culture and exceptional natural landscapes are intimately linked together.
