JAPANESE AMERICAN INTERNMENT: A TRAGEDY OF WAR A Reflexive Essay Presented To The Academic Faculty Amber Martinez In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in American Studies Kennesaw State University (May, 2014) 1 Japanese American internment in the United States during World War II affected thousands of lives for generations yet it remains hidden in historical memory. There have been surges of public interest since the release of the internees, such as during the Civil Rights movement and the campaign for redress, which led to renewed interest in scholarship investigating the internment. Once redress was achieved in 1988, public interest waned again as did published analysis of the internment. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began, American pride and displays of homeland loyalty created a unique event in American history. -

Also I found the following interesting thing. /hen Captain knrtin came to Tule Lake on July 28, 1944, the resegregation and repatriation representatives had an interview with the vice-consul, and the following points were brought up to his attention: 1). That in May, 1944, a list was submitted to the Spanish Consul by the resegregation and repatriation re presentatives to be forwarded to the Spanish Embassy with six thousand applicants. 2). Up to this interview it was claimed by these re presentatives that 7,465 applicants had duly signed for re segregation on their free will and that probably a supple mentary list will be added to this in the future. 5). Complaint by these representatives that the se- gregants had to live with the old Tuleans, who had lived in this center ever since this center was opened; and that be cause of this unfavorable and unbearable conditions, we, the applicants wish to be resegregated. 4). To the question by Capt. Martin as to where they (resegregents)wanted to live, the representatives replied that it did not matter where the place is as long as people with the same ideals and with the same feelings can live to gether to wait for repatriation. -2- R). The Shackles of the People of the Sun: Racism, “Military Necessity,” and Japanese- American Internment during WW II By Andrew J. Lee Junior Paper Word Count: 2490 1 On February 19, 1942, about two months after Pearl Harbor, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an Executive Order 9066, which authorized the internment of 107,000 Japanese people, two thirds being American citizens.1 Although it is the responsibility of the government to defend its country, its fear of “fifth columns,” groups that undermine a nation’s war effort from the inside, made the government overlook the fact that almost all Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans, who had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor, were loyal to the United States. This fear led the government to strip away their rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and incarcerated them without the Fifth Amendment due process. Their right to question the works of the government, under the First Amendment, was heavily penalized, and their equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment was denied solely on the basis of their appearance and skin color. The overemphasized responsibility of protecting its country, combined with pre-existing racism, blinded the government from acting rationally. The supremacy of military necessity, fueled by racism and ignorance, trumped the rights of its people and forcibly incarcerated them. This is the story of the “prisoners without trial.”2 For two and a half centuries, Japan had been closed to Western influence. When it was forcefully reopened for trade and global influence in 1852 by the Americans, opportunities for social mobility were presented to the children of the “Rising Sun,” as they could move to America to enjoy higher standards of living. -
