His father was a successful businessman who died and left Nicolas an orphan at age 10. Nicolas and his brothers and sisters were raised by their uncle who was a bishop in the Catholic Church. The “Suncentered” or “Heliocentric” Theory In 1543, Copernicus published his masterpiece, Concerning the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres. In this book, he argued that the sun lies at the center of the universe and that all the planets revolve around it. This is called the heliocentric theory.
