Integrated Semi-Convertible Sunroof System in Glass- Reinforced Sma/Abs Resin
INTEGRATED SEMI-CONVERTIBLE SUNROOF SYSTEM IN GLASS- REINFORCED SMA/ABS RESIN Marcie Kurcz, Henri-Paul Benichou Polyscope Polymers B.V., The Netherlands Abstract This paper presents follow-up on work reported in 2011 in automotive sunroof materials [1]. The focus is on the first very-large thermoplastic sunroof module for a serial (production) cabrio (semi-convertible) vehicle. Industrial partners combined their efforts to reduce weight and optimize systems cost. The large innovative tool that was developed molds both sunroof and rear window frames at one time. The part uses glass-reinforced styrene maleic anhydride / acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (SMA/ABS-GR) resin and meets all the OEM's requirements for precise dimensions, weathering resistance, good aesthetics, and adhesion to other substructures. This paper will detail the development process, tooling considerations, and benefits vs. other materials (e.g. metals and thermoset polymers). Background and Requirements Cabrio coach (also called cabriolet, semi-convertible, or sliding ragtop) cars feature a retractable cloth roof. Advantages to automakers of such models include the fact that no redesign of the body is necessary to add the semi-convertible feature. A number of vehicles have featured this style of roof over the years, several of which are shown in Figures 1a-1b below. Figures 1a-1b. Cabrio semi-convertible or sliding ragtop models feature a retractable cloth roof. This type of model is beneficial to OEMs because it requires no redesign of the body, since pillars and roof bows remain intact. For such top-loaded systems, the sunroof frame is a critical component. The new Citroën DS3 Cabrio from PSA Peugeot Citroën features a large sunroof frame molded in SMA/ABS- GF. -

1 Tire and Rim Fundamentals
1 Tire and Rim Fundamentals We introduce and review some topics about tires, wheels, roads, vehicles, and their interactions. These subjects are needed to understand vehicle dynamics better. 1.1 Tires and Sidewall Information Pneumatic tires are the only means to transfer forces between the road and the vehicle. Tires are required to produce the forces necessary to control the vehicle, and hence, they are an important component of a vehicle. Figure 1.1 illustrates a cross section view of a tire on a rim to show the dimension parameters that are used to standard tires. The section height, tire height, orsimplyheight, kW ,isanumberthat must be added to the rim radius to make the wheel radius. The section width, ortire width, zW , is the widest dimension of a tire when the tire is not loaded. Tires are required to have certain information printed on the tire sidewall. Not Just for Transport
Not Just for Transport Light cars for fun and fresh air motoring in the last quarter century. The average car of today, can be described as an enclosed metal box with windows all round, With a temperature controlled interior, comfortable to drive in what ever the weather. This has not been universally desired and a need for a light car to provide an alternative to the hatchback has been recognised by some manufacturers. This article is about the alternatives to the normal car throughout that time. Writing this article in 2018, twenty five years back is the year 1993. In the period since 1993 I have identified quite a number of models that can be put in the a list of cars that meet the description of For Fun, or provide fresh air motoring. Motoring Journalists in the early 1990’s were suggesting that the convertible car was a thing of the past and would be no more. In the new millennium open air motoring showed signs of revival. The obvious candidates the light sport cars are few in number, the majority are various versions of regular hatchbacks, with a few unique models. I have listed them in annual order with a few details and a picture gleaned from Wikipedia. Mazda MX5 Miata.. The Miata was first produced in Japan in 1989 and this version would be produced until 1997, by which time 433,649 had been produced. A classic front engined, rear wheel drive sports car in soft top convertible or hard top form. engine. Opel Tigra A. First produced in Spain in1994 until 2001, a front wheel drive.
