    Ice Hockey: History and Rules Read the short text about the history of ice hockey and answer the questions: The Origins of the Game Most historians place the roots of hockey in the chilly climates of northern Europe, specifically Great Britain and France, where field hockey was a popular summer sport more than 500 years ago. When the ponds and lakes froze in winter, it was not unusual for the athletes who fancied that sport to play a version of it on ice. Articles in London newspapers around that time mention increasing interest in the sport, which many observers believe got its name from the French word “hoquet”, which means a “bent stick.” A number of writers thought this game should be forbidden because it was so disruptive to people out for a leisurely winter skate. Hockey Comes to North America Not surprisingly, the earliest North American games were played in Canada. British soldiers organized contests on frozen ponds in Halifax in the 1870s, and about that same time in Montreal students from McGill University began facing off against each other in a downtown ice rink. Hockey became so popular that games were soon being played on a regular basis between clubs from Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. The English Governor, Lord Stanley of Preston, was so impressed that in 1892 he bought a silver bowl with an interior gold finish and ordered that it would be given each year to the best amateur team in Canada. That trophy, of course, is known as the Stanley Cup and is awarded today to the winners of the National Hockey League playoffs.

We let them get to the top of the paint for a couple of goals that we’re generally solid on. We had a couple of two-on-twos that turned into two very good chances, happened up there. So, clearly, we’ve got to address that. Those aren’t odd-man rushes, that’s not stretch plays, that’s just basic two on twos that we need to communicate better, square up better, defend better. Then obviously, you want a save, as well, mixed in in those, and that didn’t happen either. So, the stuff that we’ve done lately: defend, get saves, that didn’t happen early on. We found our legs eventually and fought our way back in, but the start wasn’t good enough. On if the power plays and late push just didn’t seem to be… Well, you’ve got to give their goaltender credit. Both games we’ve lost, we’ve put over 40 shots on net. At least 20-something chances, not all on net, that were great chances. So, he was very good tonight; let’s face it. He made a lot of good saves. The goals we got weren’t cheap. Maybe the last one he lost track of, but we were around their net a lot. They got out to the early lead. It’s always easier to play with the lead.

    Ice Hockey Basics Ice Hockey is one of the fastest games on earth and one of the easiest to understand. Each side plays six men at a time (unless someone has been put in the penalty box). Substitutions are made when play stops or can be made "on the fly" while play is in progress. The positions are goalkeeper, left and right defense, center, left and right wing. Once you've learned the three basic rules you'll be on your way to understanding the game. (See below.) Games are divided into three periods. The amount in each period depends on the length of the game. A team scores when one of its players shoots the puck into the opponent's net with his stick. Players who help set up a goal get assists, but only two assists can be scored on a goal. In some leagues if a game ends in a tie, a 5 minute sudden death overtime period or shoot out is played. Three Basic Rules of Hockey These three rules are designed to cut down on stalling, encourage teamwork and maintain the speed of the game. OFFSIDE A team is offside when any member of the attacking team precedes the puck carrier over the defending team's blue line. The position of the player's skates and not that of his stick is the determining factor. If both skates are over the blue line before the puck, the player is offside. If he has only one skate over the blue line and one on it, he is onside.

    2020-21 and 2021-22 Major Rules Changes for Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey The following rules changes were approved by the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee and the Playing Rules Oversight Panel. These changes will be incorporated into the rules book for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. Rule Rule Change and Rationale 25.2 To clarify that the spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360 degree turn as the player approaches Penalty Shot the goal, shall not be permitted. Rationale: This change clarifies what a legal move is when attempting a penalty shot. This rule change is consistent with the National Hockey League’s rules on this type of move. 81.1 To modify the current faceoff procedure so that on the initial violation of the faceoff, the center will not be Faceoff removed. The linesman will issue a warning to the violating team and any subsequent violation by the same team Procedure during the same faceoff will result in a bench minor to the violating team. Rationale: To speed up the faceoff by not removing the center after the first violation. (Note: This change has no impact on a player’s ability to use their skate to win the faceoff.) 81.2 To permit the attacking team to select the location of the faceoff in the offensive half of the zone following an Faceoff Location icing or the start of a powerplay.
