About the artists Fri, Nov 6 at 9pm Audra Isadora Drawing inspiration from iconoclasts like Kate Bush and David Bowie, Audra Isadora combines outré glam eccentricity with irresistible pop hooks. Her seductive, powerhouse contralto propels synth-heavy dance-floor rave-ups and soaring, down-tempo ballads alike, all wrapped in offbeat arrangements that feature oboe lines played by Isadora. Sat, Nov 7 at 9pm Tammy Scheffer Sextet Tammy Scheffer’s crystalline voice draws listeners into her imaginative jazz experiments. Backed by a virtuoso five-piece ensemble, the Belgian-Israeli vocalist and composer incorporates scat-like improvisation, rhythms reminiscent of bossa nova, Middle Eastern influences, and an atmospheric use of loop pedals. The result is forward-thinking jazz full of ever-shifting textures and moods. Fri, Nov 13 at 10pm God’s Unruly Friends Master multi-instrumentalist Dawoud (formerly of Renegade Sufi) leads this adventurous sitar- based ensemble, which expands upon classical ragas with otherworldly electronics, hypnotic pedal loops, and free jazz improvisation. Dawoud—who has performed and recorded with artists like Lauryn Hill, James Blood Ulmer, and Nona Hendryx—moves between sitar, dilruba, guitar, bass, laptop, and more to create deep, trancelike grooves and subtly psychedelic soundscapes. Sat, Nov 14 at 10pm REBELLUM – Burnt Sugar Arkestra’s Avant Splinter Cell An offshoot of the legendary Burnt Sugar Arkestra—once described by Robert Christgau as “electric Miles with soul, ‘Maggot Brain’ with a Ph.D., the Hendrix-Evans band of dreams”— REBELLUM is boundary-pushing jazz-funk at its most enlightened and experimental. Led by visionary composer, conductor, and Black Rock Coalition co-founder Greg Tate, REBELLUM delivers offbeat soul harmonies, swinging horn lines, and Hendrix-meets-Funkadelic guitar solos. Fri, Nov 20 at 9pm Awesome Tapes From Africa (DJ Set) Presented in conjunction with World Music Institute Ethnomusicologist Brian Shimkovitz, the writer behind the popular blog Awesome Tapes From Africa, spins some of the best of the folkloric pop, left-field dance-floor gems, and hip-hop bangers from his massive collection of ultra-rare African cassette tape finds. This eye- and ear-opening DJ set will introduce listeners to some of the most obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. Sat, Nov 21 at 9pm—Gato Loco Gato Loco Presented in conjunction with World Music Institute Gato Loco fuses Latin mambo and modern rock firepower for a bold, exuberant sound. Saxophonist Stefan Zeniuk (of New York Howl) leads the brass and bass-heavy ensemble through rousing reworkings of classic genres, updating the traditional Cuban Son with dashes of salsa, 70s punk, and avant-garde jazz. The result is a fist-pumping, celebratory explosion of Latin ballroom music at its most raucous. Fri, Nov 27 and Sat, Nov 28 at 9pm Akim Funk Buddha’s Hip-Hop Holiday Dancer, beatboxer, and all-around hip-hop visionary Akim Funk Buddha returns to BAMcafé for a genre-busting, cross-cultural evening of music and dance. Having toured with legendary choreographer Bill T. Jones’ dance company, Akim draws on everything from martial arts and circus acrobatics to Mongolian throat singing and Balinese monkey chanting to completely reinvent hip-hop.
