RESUMO Este é um estudo sobre as “ narrativas de São Benedito nas festividades de Bragança do Pará”, que marcam de maneira indelével o calendário da microrregião, de maneira mais acentuada entre os 18 a 26 de dezembro há quase de 218 anos. As histórias de São Benedito dariam conta de sua fr anca atividade em que o Santo acionado pela fé, na forma de pedidos, rezas, traria benesses, curas e endireitaria a vida dos fieis. A pesquisa se orienta especialmente por uma abordagem não reducionista, a fim de evitar dicotomias tais como mito e rito, fe stividades e narrativas. Por isto adota abordagem para pensar um modelo compreensivo, chamado aqui de experiências agoráticas que tem por objetivo lançar luzes sobre as imagens vistas na vivência etnográfica, de modo a não dissociar as narrativas e festas. Por isto pesquisa , junto aos esmoladores e seus Encarregados , as narrativas do Santo no percurso emaranhado das esmolação. Resgatar a história da marujada como contexto institucional - festivo para as narrativas beneditinas no bojo da esmolações. Deste modo , percebe uma “ meshwork” de narrativas é formada a partir das viagens dos esmoladores de São Benedito, construindo “mapas verbais” da devoção na região dos colonos. E concentra - se em dado momento na figura dos Encarregados de Comitivas de Esmolação como “n arradores de São Benedito ”. Além disso, ele apresenta narrativas exemplares, reforçando o impacto do conteúdo da devoção dos colonos, deixando clara a competência performativa de contadores de histórias.     Greek numbers 05/10/2006 12:02 PM History topic: Greek number systems There were no single Greek national standards in the first millennium BC. since the various island states prided themselves on their independence. This meant that they each had their own currency, weights and measures etc. These in turn led to small differences in the number system between different states since a major function of a number system in ancient times was to handle business transactions. However we will not go into sufficient detail in this article to examine the small differences between the system in separate states but rather we will look at its general structure. We should say immediately that the ancient Greeks had different systems for cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers so we must look carefully at what we mean by Greek number systems. Also we shall look briefly at some systems proposed by various Greek mathematicians but not widely adopted. The first Greek number system we examine is their acrophonic system which was use in the first millennium BC. 'Acrophonic' means that the symbols for the numerals come from the first letter of the number name, so the symbol has come from an abreviation of the word which is used for the number. Here are the symbols for the numbers 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000. Acrophonic 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000. We have omitted the symbol for 'one', a simple '|', which was an obvious notation not coming from the initial letter of a number. For 5, 10, 100, 1000, 10000 there will be only one puzzle for the reader and that is the symbol for 5 which should by P if it was the first letter of Pente.

Thompson Selwyn College, Cambridge [email protected] ABSTRACT A grapheme found in three Eteocretan inscriptions has been identified as either phi or koppa. On epigraphic grounds the identification with phi in at least two of those inscriptions is suspect. On the other hand the distribution of the grapheme suggests initially that it cannot be koppa: it is found at word end, pre‐consonantally and before non‐back vowels but never before back vowels, while kappa is attested before /o/. This distribution remains unexplained, however, if it is identified as phi, but could be accounted for if the grapheme koppa were adopted to represent an Eteocretan labiovelar /kw/ which had undergone (as is cross‐linguistically common) dissimilatory loss of lip‐rounding adjacent to [+rounded] vowels. Keywords: Eteocretan, Crete, epigraphy, phonology Eteocretan is the name given to the unknown, non‐Greek language(s) of one surviving alphabetic inscription (and one surviving word in another inscription) from Dreros and five from Praisos, dating from between the seventh and second centuries BCE. The corpus is collected and comprehensively discussed by Duhoux (1982). Three of the inscriptions from Praisos (PRA 2, 3, 5) contain a sign, represented here as * I am very grateful to Dr P. M. This distinction is based in his assertion that a Q-shaped KOPPA is used in text, but a Z-shaped KOPPA is used as a numeral in modern Greek practice – and that modern Greek users do not recognize the identity of the two signs. In this document I will examine the evidence to hand. (Stathopoulos prefers the term “sigmoid KOPPA” to “Z-shaped KOPPA”, but I consider the latter to be more convenient in English.) Cook 1987 presents a convenient table with 5 archaic Greek alphabets. Note the letters DIGAMMA, SAN (> SAMPI), and Q-shaped KOPPA. Note also the capital and small versions of these letters (but not SAN) in the modern Greek typeface on the left. Page 1 Cook 1987 also gives a convenient summary of the letters used numerically: Note the use of DIGAMMA as 6, Q-shaped KOPPA as 90, and SAMPI as 900. Threatte 1996 gives a similar summary of the letters used numerically: Note the use of DIGAMMA, STIGMA, and SIGMA-TAU as 6, Q-shaped KOPPA as 90, and SAMPI as 900. When DIGAMMA was lost, STIGMA seems to have been substituted for it.

Coughlan B.A. Carleton College M.A. University of Wisconsin—Madison March 18, 2016 Committee Chair: Kathryn Gutzwiller, Ph.D. Alex Sens, Ph.D. Lauren Ginsberg, Ph.D. i Abstract This dissertation is a study of dialect choice and dialect mixture in Hellenistic book epigram. The aims of the project are not only linguistic, but also literary; indeed, what motivates the study is an overarching interest in understanding how specific dialect choices can enrich the meaning of the poem in which they appear. Scholars have only recently started to include dialect in their readings of individual epigrams, but no one has systematically studied the entire corpus. In order to more fully understand Hellenistic book epigram and its flourishing during a period of great social, cultural, and literary change, we must confront the genre’s use of dialect or otherwise miss out on an important component in this self-conscious genre’s production of poetic meaning. Following an introduction that sets out the interpretive framework for the dissertation and explores issues of dialect transmission in the manuscript tradition, the study falls into two parts, each comprising three chapters. In the first part, I attempt to situate dialect choice and mixture in its poetic and literary-critical contexts. In the first chapter, I investigate dialect usage in pre- Hellenistic Greek poetry, not including inscribed epigram, arguing that dialect mixture for poetic effect existed in Archaic and Classical poetry.
