Colin Koopman 2010 ISSN: 1832-5203 Foucault Studies, No. 8, pp. 100-121, February 2010 ARTICLE Historical Critique or Transcendental Critique in Foucault: Two Kantian Lineages Colin Koopman, University of Oregon ABSTRACT: A growing body of interpretive literature concerning the work of Michel Foucault asserts that Foucault’s critical project is best interpreted in light of various strands of philosophical phenomenology. In this article I dispute this interpretation on both textual and philosophical grounds. It is shown that a core theme of ‘the phenomenological Foucault’ having to do with transcendental inquiry cannot be sustained by a careful reading of Foucault’s texts nor by a careful interpretation of Foucault’s philosophical commitments. It is then shown that this debate in Foucault scholarship has wider ramifications for understanding ‘the critical Foucault’ and the relationship of Foucault’s projects to Kantian critical philosophy. It is argued that Foucault’s work is Kantian at its core insofar as it institutes a critical inquiry into conditions of possibility. But whereas critique for Kant was transcendental in orientation, in Foucault critique becomes historical, and is much the better for it. Madness and Civilization By John Protevi / Permission to reproduce granted for academic use [email protected] / http://www.protevi.com/john/Foucault/ PDF/Madness_and_Civilization.pdf In this lecture I rely heavily on Gary Gutting, Michel Foucault's Archaeology of Scientific Reason (Cambridge UP, 1989) F's work on mental illness in the 1950s Strictly speaking, this is not F's first work. Two major works of the 50s preceded it: a book entitled Mental Illness and Personality (1st ed, 1954) or Mental Illness and Psychology (2nd ed, 1962) and a long Introduction to the French translation of Binswanger's work of existential analysis, Traum und Existenz (1954). Both works betray Foucault's existential phenomenological outlook in the 50s, as they explicate mental illness or dreams as phenomena explicable only in terms of personal existence, of the meaning of the world constituted by individual subjects. The key factor is imagination, the creation of a world other than the present one: for mental illness, the lived world is dominated by terrifying images that lock the ill person in sick situations; in healthy people, the imaginary world can be realized artistically, and hence becomes an expression of the existence of the person. The key that produces mental illness is the blocking of expression by a warped social system that prevents some people from acting on their projects (blocks their desiring- production, in D/G terms). Therapy must consist in helping the person move their social situation to one that allows expression. In other words, F has an essentially Marxist account of mental illness at this point. -
Archaeology And/Or Genealogy: Agamben's Transformation Of
Journal of Italian Philosophy, Volume 1 (2018) Archaeology and/or Genealogy: Agamben’s Transformation of Foucauldian Method Stephen Howard Attentive readers of Giorgio Agamben’s Homo Sacer project will no doubt have noticed Agamben’s vacillating descriptions of his philosophical method as ‘archaeology’ or ‘genealogy’. These terms derive most clearly from Michel Foucault, a fact that Agamben underlines by regularly situating the Homo Sacer project in relation to the French thinker, as development or completion of Foucault’s work on governmentality, power and biopolitics (1998, p.3–7; 2011, xi– xiii). However, despite employing Foucault’s terms, Agamben furnishes ‘archaeology’ and ‘genealogy’ with meanings which deviate significantly from Foucault’s use. We will here return to Foucault’s use of these terms to describe his method in distinct periods of his work, in order to illuminate the singular way that Agamben develops the archaeological and genealogical methodologies. I exemplify Agamben’s approach through one of the later, more political-theological contributions to the Homo Sacer series, with the aim of helping to clarify the place that these apparently esoteric works occupy in the series’ general political project. Finally, I show that Walter Benjamin is the key figure in the constellation informing Agamben’s archaeological-genealogical approach and examine the philosophical consequences of Agamben’s transformation of Foucault’s methods. 1. Agamben’s conflation of archaeology and genealogy Agamben’s 2008 book on method, The Signature of all Things, and its third chapter on ‘Philosophical Archaeology’, is the first place to look for an account of the significance of archaeology and genealogy for the Homo Sacer project. -

I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract My thesis revolves around three axes: the Foucauldian critical-historical method, its relationship with enlightenment critique and the way this critique is implemented in Foucault’s seminal work, History of Madness. Foucault’s exploration of the origins of psychiatry applieshis owntheories of power, truth and reason anddraws on Kant’s philosophy,shedding new light on the way we perceive the birth and development of psychiatric practice. Following Foucault’s adoption of ‘limit attitude’, which investigates the limits of our thinking as points of disruption and renewal of established frames of reference, the thesis aims to dispel the widely accepted belief that psychiatry represents the triumph of rationalism by somehow conquering madness and turning it into an object of neutral, scientific perception. A history of limits examinesthe birth of psychiatry in its full complexity: in the late eighteenth century, doctors were not simply rationalists but also alienists, philosophers of finitude who recognized madness as an experience at the limits of reason, introducing a discourse which conditioned the formation of psychiatry as a type of medical activity. Since that event, the same type of recognition, the same anthropological confrontation with madness has persisted beneath the calm development of psychiatric rationality, undermining the supposed linearity, absolute authority and steady progress of psychiatric positivism. -

Porter’s call to reclaim the voice of the voiceless has had an extraordinary echo, becoming not only a necessary reference but also a classic trope. This is especially the case among historians of psychiatry. In a field where patient narratives have long formed their own subgenre, shedding light on these hitherto unheard stories taps into popular fantasies probed by Porter himself – images of gothic madhouses and their gloomy inhabitants; whispers and cries; dark corridors encased in windowless walls, their interiors mirroring the mind gone astray.2 So ubiquitous is this imagined space that some have recently proposed to create an independent research area dedicated to ‘Mad Studies’.3 Fetishised, mythicised, ostracised, the psychiatric patient has emerged as an unlikely protagonist, capturing the scholarly, cultural and artistic imagination alike. -

For Michel Foucault, philosophy was a way of question- ing the allegedly necessary truths that underpin the prac- tices and institutions of modern society.
