  • RAF EXPERIENCES Hugh Cortazzi I Began to Study Japanese As An
CHAPTER TWELVE RAF EXPERIENCES Hugh Cortazzi I began to study Japanese as an aircraftsman shortly after I joined the RAF in 1943 when I was nineteen. After some fifteen months at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, I was posted to India where, after attending an Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU), I was sent to the Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre (India) (CSDIC(I)) in Delhi. In August 1945 I was a member of No.5 Mobile Sections of CSDIC(I) which was attached to 14 Army. 14 Army was to provide the main force for the reoccupation of Malaya. In the event the Japanese surrender inter- vened and I arrived in Singapore at the beginning of September in time for the formal Japanese surrender. I was at first on the staff of tactical head- quarters 14 Army. Later as a member of Southeast Asia Translation and Interrogation Centre (SEATIC) my duties (in Singapore, Malaya and Sumatra) included interpreting and helping to arrange the withdrawal of Japanese forces, investigating Japanese army air and naval air organization and history in the war as well as helping to investigate war crimes. I wanted to go to Japan and eventually succeeded in getting a posting to British Commonwealth Air Forces (BCAIR) Headquarters at Iwakuni in June 1946. The journey by air from Singapore to Iwakuni involved flying in a Dakota (DC3) aircraft. The DC3 was the work-horse of air transport in those days. Its seats consisted of canvas benches down either side of the fuselage. I had, of course, to wait until a ‘seat’ was available as I did not have a high priority.

  • The Location Trend of Day Service Facilities and the Level of Sufficiency by Use Sphere in Yamaguchi Prefecture
THE LOCATION TREND OF DAY SERVICE FACILITIES AND THE LEVEL OF SUFFICIENCY BY USE SPHERE IN YAMAGUCHI PREFECTURE Mari CHIHARA1, Mahito NAKAZONO2 and Sachiko YAMAMOTO3 1 Faculty of Eng., Yamaguchi Univ. 2 Prof., Graduate School of Science and Eng., Yamaguchi Univ., Dr. Eng. 3 Assistants Prof., Graduate School of Science and Eng., Yamaguchi Univ., Dr. Eng. KEYWORDS: Health coverage system, Day service for old people, Facilities location, Use sphere ABSTRACT: This paper aims at explaining the location trend of day service facilities and the change in time series of the sufficiency level by use sphere after the health coverage system was introduced. The results are as follows. 1) Though the number of facilities construction before the introduction of care insurance system was about 3-10 facilities/year, the number increased rapidly with about 40 facilities/year after 2000. And the small-scale facilities in the capacity of less than 10 people are on the increase drastically in place of the facilities in the capacity of 11-30 people around the large-scale area after the care insurance law revision in 2006 which the promotion of supply of small scale multiple functions type was decided. 2) The aging rate and sufficient rate are similar to about 25% in the large-scale area, but the difference is seen in the middle scale area in 20-30% of aging rates and 15-40% of sufficient rates. 3) Though the aging rate exceeds 40% in the small-scale area in the cities of half, the sufficient rate is large before and after 20%, so the rate is low relatively.

  • Rural Tourism for Local Revitalization in Yamaguchi Prefecture
    (499) -35一 Rural Tourism for Local Revitalization in Yamaguchi Prefecture Munehiko ASAMIZU Yamaguchi University Fred R. SCHUMANN University of Guam Abhik CHAKRABORTY Izu Peninsula Geopark Promotion Council Abstract This paper examines tourist connections between urban and rural areas in Japan with a special focus on Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yamaguchi Prefecture has many nat- ural and historical tourist destinations that appeal to the domestic tourist market. Unfortunately, mountainous agricultural areas in Yamaguchi Prefecture which are far from urban areas have been suffering from depopulation and aging. For rural re- vitalization, some of the rural communities in Yamaguchi are trying to initiate new types of tourism which target urban residents. Keywords:depopulation, rural revitalization, rural tourism lntroduction For more than half a century, rural depopulation has been a serious problem in Japan. To mitigate rural depopulation, the Japanese govern- ment established the Comprehensive National Development Plans(2葱π々o肋 50〃go%血劾薦勿1衝ゴんα肋)in 1962. In an effort to combat rural depopula- tion, the creation of employment opportunities has been important. Some of the prefectural governments also initiated unique plans to mitigate de- population. For example, the One Village One Product movement started from Oita Prefecture and contributed to the production of unique, special一 36- (500) 一 山口経済学雑誌 第63巻 第6号 ty products representative of each village that have also become souvenirs for tourists. At the same time, the rural way of life is becoming
