20 August 2011

Dear CERN visit participants,

On behalf of all the sponsors I’d like to congratulate you once again on winning your visit to CERN.

Attached is information regarding the trip. You have received the most important parts before in the course of several emails, but please look over it all, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any last-minute questions.

The group is meeting at the Botany Gate of the University of Glasgow ready to leave at 6.30am on Wednesday – remember your passport!

Have a wonderful visit!

Yours sincerely,

Dr Aidan Robson and Prof Tony Doyle (University of Glasgow Particle Physics) Isla Dennis (The Ogden Trust) Dr Rebecca Crawford (Science Connects) Prof Rob Ellam (Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre)

The University of Glasgow, charity number SC004401 Meeting

The group will meet on Wednesday 24 August at the University of Glasgow Botany Gate, ready to leave at 6.30am. The Botany Gate is at the junction of University Avenue and University Place, close to where you came for the Masterclass, and a map is attached at the end of this document.

Accompanying Teachers

Accompanying the trip are Mr Stewart from Calderglen HS, and Miss McDonald from Ayr Academy.

Transfer to Edinburgh Airport

You will be driven to Edinburgh Airport in a Glasgow University minibus by Dr Chris Collins-Tooth from the Particle Physics group.

Flights

The flight details are given below: Edinburgh- Dep Wednesday 24 August 2011 09:20 Arr Wednesday 24 August 2011 12:35 Easyjet EZY6903

Geneva-Edinburgh Dep Friday 26 August 2011 16:10 Arr Friday 26 August 2011 17:20 Easyjet EZY6908

Luggage

Please bring hand-luggage only (it’s only two nights!) Easyjet hand-luggage limit is one item, maximum size 56x45x25cm; no mass limit. Remember that there are limits on the amount of liquids you can take on to an aeroplane: containers must be a maximum of 100ml, and all containers must be inside a clear plastic bag 20x20cm or smaller. More information at www.edinburghairport.com if you need it.

Transfer to CERN

On arrival at you will proceed through passport control into the baggage reclaim area. You won’t have any luggage to collect, but before you leave the baggage carousel area you must do one thing, which is to pick up a free ticket for Geneva public transport (“TPG”) from the machine next to the sliding exit doors. To help you find it, a photo of the machine is included at the end of this document. Press the button and get one ticket each.

Outside the sliding doors, Mike Wright from Glasgow University Particle Physics will be waiting to meet you. He is very tall and has red hair, and will be holding a sign so he will be easy to find. He will take you to CERN on the and , using the ticket that you picked up.

Accommodation

You will be staying in CERN accommodation and will receive keys etc on arrival.

Passports at CERN

Since CERN straddles the border between France and you should carry your passport with you.

Meals

You will be eating in the CERN cafeteria, which is where all the physicists meet to discuss their work! It can get busy at lunchtime! On arrival at CERN you will receive vouchers for the cafeteria for fixed amounts of Swiss Francs – note that you won’t get change from them, but more than one people can “pay” together to even out any underspends or overspends. Note that the cafeteria staff are mostly French-speaking, but should be OK with English too.

Currency

Apart from the cafeteria vouchers that you will receive, the currency in use on the CERN site is the Swiss Franc (CHF). The exchange rate is bad just now, so unfortunately everything in Switzerland seems very expensive.

Itinerary

Your itinerary while at CERN is organized by the CERN Education Department and you will receive it separately, or on arrival. You will be visiting experiments, accelerators, exhibitions and probably downtown Geneva too. You are likely to meet a lot of postgraduate students and staff from the University of Glasgow while you are there, and also some well-known people, a few of whose pictures are below. Please take every opportunity to ask everyone questions! If you’re stuck for a topic, just ask how they started in particle physics / what they do each day / what they think the most interesting problems in particle physics are… everyone will be delighted to talk.

Return Travel

On arrival back in Edinburgh on Friday 26 August you will take bus/taxi to Haymarket station, and the train to Glasgow Queen Street. Estimated time of arrival at Glasgow Queen St will be 1900- 2000, depending on flights and traffic.

Insurance

Insurance for the trip has been booked with Endsleigh and if you would like to check the policy it is available at http://ppewww.physics.gla.ac.uk/~robson/CernTrip/ .

European Health Insurance Card

I hope you managed to get your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); please take it with you.
