SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS • There is a need for more robust and comparable data to better assess the economic impact of culture in the European Union • More capacity building is necessary to facilitate knowledge flows and effective partnerships between key players, including governments, HE institutions, arts councils and businesses • The cultural potential of rural areas, and the role of higher education in these rural areas, should not be neglected: we need alternative models to that of the “city region” and a bolder way of conceiving these models • Boundaries between subsidised/non-subsidised cultural sectors are blurred: public subsidy should be considered as an investment and joint working between the sectors is crucial is key • Secure public/political support for bridging artists with business • Public sector needs to provide a palate of financial tools and to mediate with banks as cultural and creative industries still seen as too high a risk • Importance of raising awareness of the contribution of cultural -

This followed on the previous year's launch of a new branding for the institute and the re-design of our journal, Agenda. This has been far from a cosmetic exercise, since it is aimed not only at increasing our membership but increasing our engagement with that membership. That process of engagement is evident in the long list of events and publications that follows in this report, but the new websites will allow daily commentary on public affairs as they affect Wales, and give opportunity for comment and debate, as well as allowing people to join, to donate, to purchase publications and to register for our conferences - all online. -

Emma Heron Edge Hill University, U.K. Exiled Across the Mersey Performing Religio-Cultural Identity at the Borders with the Liverpool Welsh Abstract This paper juxtaposes the hybridised, religio-cultural distinctiveness of traditional articulations of Liverpool Welsh identity with discoveries made during the creation of the semi-autobiographical performance Cartref/At Home and the exhibition Cegin y Capel/The Chapel Kitchen. The Liverpool Welsh are a community of Welsh “ex-pats” living in Liverpool, though historically the relationship between the Northern Welsh and Liverpool has been ambivalent. In common with many “colonised” peoples, Welsh people have “never simply and completely opposed” English society (Ashcroft, Griffiths, & Tiffin 1998, 12-13), nor have they ever completely rejected the influence of Liverpool on their culture and industry, even after the flooding of Capel Celyn (1965) became such a resounding symbol of their colonised status. Today, the community is largely invisible to other Liverpudlians. Self-described exiles, the Liverpool Welsh view themselves as a Welsh language community located in England. Key aspects of the community’s identity are chronicled by its male leadership, expressed through the prism of Welsh Nonconformism. This paper re-examines the significance of more traditional articulations of the Liverpool Welsh community’s distinctiveness, calling for a more inclusive, multi-vocal approach to chronicling its histories, one that better represents the range of experiences contained within the community in the twenty-first century.
