Imediat după lansarea lui oficială la Berlin, în anul 1919, a pătruns în România prin „filiera germană” (în anii 1920-1921). Încă din primii ani după apariţia jocului de handbal, România începe să se afirme la nivel internaţional, atât cu echipele reprezentative feminine, cât și masculine. Între anii 1960 şi 1984, România devine una din marile puteri ale lumii handbalistice atât la feminin cât şi la masculin, cucerind titluri mondiale şi me- dalii olimpice. Începutul anilor 1990-2000 găseşte România în startul tranziţiei care aduce instabilitate economică şi confuzie în viaţa naţiunii, influenţând negativ şi activitatea handbalistică din ţara noastră. Chiar dacă în ultimii ani poziţia handbalului românesc la nivel mondial nu este cea mai bună, totuşi echipa naţională feminină reuşeşte să readucă speranţa în sufletele iubi- torilor de handbal prin cucerirea titlului de Vicecampioană Mondială în Rusia (decembrie 2005) şi -
