GROUP 1 FC Midtjylland

Despite being hit early in the first round by the injury of their playmaker Laerke Möller, the Danish champions were running abreast Györ with three wins out of three matches.

Although FC Midtjylland stumbled on the court of 2012 winners at Podgorica in the Round 4, they quickly regained the momentum and clinched their main round berth with one game to spare. With their victory at Dabas, Hungary not only did they send one of their rivals - FTC to the brink of elimination from the European top flight, but they also made a huge step towards securing of the top spot in Group B.

Their fifth victory in six matches in the last round (over Lublin) confirmed them for the Pot 1 of seeded teams and improved their chances to emulate their best result in the Europe’s premier competition from 2002/03 season, when they reached the semi-finals.

Line Jörgensen leads their top scorers with 26 goals ahead of the Dutch centre back Cornelia Groot with 24.

13 GROUP 1 WHC Vardar SCBT

The newcomers from Skopje certainly made a splash in their first campaign in Europe’s elite competition, with one of only two unbeaten records in the entire group matches. It was a shaky start for the star studded team, as they stumbled to a 23:19 win at Bera Bera, but they soon showed what they are capable of with a draw against last season’s runners-up Larvik.

Total dominance ensued for Vardar, with three consecutive wins by double digits and qualification was secure. A 31:29 win over Larvik in Round 6 gave them top spot in Group D and sent out warning to the rest of the competition. Jovanka Radicevic top scored on the day with seven goals, bringing her total to 28 and only two behind Andrea Lekic, who leads Vardar’s scorers in the competition.

A place in the main round was the ‘official’ target set by the club at the beginning of the season. However, after their performances so far, expectations have surely risen.

17 GROUP 1 IK Sävehof

The Swedish champions were the surprise package of the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches this season. After taking just one win in last season’s competition, not much more was expected from the almost exclusively Swedish side and an eight-goal loss in their opening game did little to suggest otherwise.

However, their season sparked into life with a hard fought win over Metz, coming from four goals behind at the break to snatch a 32:30 win and belief took a hold over the squad. A double-header against Thüringer came at the perfect time, as the German side were struggling with injuries. Sävehof took full advantage with six and seven-goal victories and left themselves on the brink of qualifying for their first main round.

In the penultimate game, they let a three-goal half-time lead slip at home to Krim Mercator, as the Slovenians came back to draw 25:25. However, the shared points were enough to send Sävehof through. Ida Oden and were crucial for the team, contributing 36 and 32 goals respectively in their six matches.

21 GROUP 1 Thüringer HC

The third trip to the Women’s EHF Champions League proved to be a lucky one for the German champions. After they recorded just a single point two years ago in their first attempt and having narrowly missed the main round last season, Thüringer did not stumble at the crucial step this time.

Since the draw of the group matches has been completed, Herbert Müller’s squad knew that their main rivals in the race for the ticket in the top eight will be four-time winners Hypo Niederösterreich. Surprisingly, the Romanian newcomers from Baia Mare refused to limit their participation to harvesting some experience and with their home wins made the qualification knot even tighter.

In the last round Thüringer found themselves under an imperative of at least four-goal victory, but they accomplished this feat surprisingly easily and beat Hypo by nine goals, also taking revenge for last season’s elimination in the Women’s Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals. Austrian Sonja Frey led German side with 36 goals in the group matches, followed by Alexandrina Barbosa with 34.

25 GROUP 2 RK Krim Mercator

RK Krim Mercator kick started their campaign in emphatic fashion with an eight-goal win over fellow main round qualifiers IK Sävehof and an equally impressive away win at HC Leipzig. There was a minor setback at the half-way mark in the group as a previously unimpressive Metz came to life and took their first two points in a 21:20 win over Krim.

Last season’s semi-finalists made up for it in the reverse fixture, with a six-goal win against the French side and a draw the following weekend against Sävehof proved to be a perfect result, as it sent both teams through with one round to spare. Krim finished the group matches in style against an injury weakened Leipzig, coasting to a 12-goal win against the German side with only ten players in the squad.

The Slovenian side were well balanced throughout the group. Four players scored over 20 goals in the six matches, with Croatian left back Andrea Penezic leading the attack with 28.

After having failed in seven consecutive European Cup finals before lifting the premiere trophy last May, the defending champions look like their appetite for success has been far from satiated. They entered the new campaign in an impressive fashion winning all six matches and emerging as a class of their own.

Only in the last two rounds, when their main round ticket and the top spot in Group A were already sealed and their key players benched for more time than usual, Györ’s rivals avoided crushing defeats. Away in Round 5 the Hungarian powerhouse won only by the narrowest margin over Hypo and in the last match against well-motivated Baia Mare, who had been still dreaming about second place before the match, Györ recorded a two-goal win.

Last summer two of Györ’s stalwarts departed for Vardar, but new signing Katarina Bulatovic is firing on all cyllinders and is making the memories of Andrea Lekic and Jovanka Radicevic fade away gradually. In six matches she scored 37 goals and proved herself again as one of the main contender for the top scorer’s award. Besides the Montengrin right back, coach Ambros Martin can also rely on the traditional fire power represented by the captain Anita Görbicz (37) and Heidi Loke (22 goals).

33 GROUP 2 Larvik

Last season’s runners-up got the new season off to a perfect start with a dominant win over Podravka Vegeta in Round 1. The Norwegians looked to be well on their way to making it two out of two when leading by three at half-time against Vardar, but a 27:27 draw was a clear warning that Larvik were not going to have everything their own way in this group.

Three relatively straightforward victories followed, twice against Bera Bera and once more against Podravka, and qualification was confirmed. Vardar came to town on the final day and proved to be more than a match, taking two points away from and meant that Larvik failed to finish first in their group for the first time since 2008.

Nevertheless, confidence will remain high in the team as long as injured players return for the beginning of the main round. After missing the majority of the last two seasons, Nora Mörk’s return to team has been invaluable, as she top scored with 35 goals.

37 GROUP 2 Budućnost

The 2012 winners seem to be enjoying last second decisions on their participation in the main round. For the second year in a row Buducnost booked their ticket only in the last round. In the direct encounter against FTC Rail Cargo Hungaria, their only contender, they needed at least one-goal victory.

For 40 minutes it looked like the game could go either way as both teams betrayed their nervousness with many naive mistakes. Only in the last 15 minutes could the full Moraca hall in Podgorica start to celebrate as Dragan Adzic’s outfit, supported by several great saves by Marta Zderic, escaped by five and more goals.

Buducnost maintained a perfect record on home court and combined with two points taken from Lublin, they finished two points below FC Midtjylland and two points above. Radmila Petrovic with 33, Milena Knezevic with 24 and the Romanian reinforcement with 23 goals were the main scoring force for Montenegrin champions.
