4 Foreword

Dear Media Representative,

Welcome to Group Matches of the WOMEN’S EHF Champions League 2013/14

Welcome to the thrilling next phase of the Women’s EHF Champions League. In September 2013, we saw the conclusion of the Qualification Phase, which in turn completed the line-up of the Group Matches. The four teams each claimed the final fourth place in each group.

In October and through November, the six rounds of the Group Matches in this top competition will be played out in venues across Europe. I take this opportunity to congratulate the clubs teams from Germany, Hungary, FYR Macedonia and which successfully completed the qualification phase. They will now join the remaining 12 teams drawn across Group A to D.

The Group Matches phase is set to be highly entertaining as three teams will enter the arena as Champions League newcomers and six teams will return as former champions. This season, there are five club teams that boast 15 or more seasons in the Champions League. But we all know this game very well; the only thing that will matter is the result at the end of the second period.

As the Group Matches throw off, it would be hard not to think about the next step. The teams have a lot to play for. A ticket to the Main Round will bring eight teams closer to their dream of gold; however, for the eight teams that are ranked third and fourth on 17 November 2013, their campaign will end at this point. Skill, determination or luck...it is now up to the players.

We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future.

I therefore hope you consider this media guide a useful and enriching resource for your work in the upcoming weeks and months.

Should you require any further information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna.

They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have.

We look forward to working with you in the coming season!

Fourteen nations are represented in the Group Matches of the One former champion out – six still in the race Women’s EHF Champions League. That is the fact after the last three out of the 16 participants were found on Sunday, 15 September, Russia, who had two teams in the Champions League last season – when the last three qualification groups were finalised. Hungary and Germany with a double representation National champions FC Midtjylland will be the only Danish team in the group stage, as the Champions League winners from 2006, 2009 and Only two countries are represented by more than one team. Hungary 2010, Viborg HK did not make it from the qualification tournament in has the same two teams in the competition as last year. Baia Mare, neither did Team Tvis Holstebro as they both had to bow out at the hands of the Romanian hosts. While reigning champions Győri Audi ETO KC had qualified directly for the group stage, FTC Rail Cargo Hungária followed them, as they won Romania’s representation has also been reduced from two teams to the all-Hungarian final in Qualification Group 2 31:24 against Érd. one, compared to last year. HCM Baia Mare can look forward to their first Champions League adventure in the club’s history. Germany is the other country to have two teams in the competition, just like they had last year. While Thüringer HC were also in the Group While Viborg will not get the chance to win their fourth Champions Matches last season, Buxtehude will be replaced this season by HC League title, four other teams, who have all lifted the trophy before, Leipzig who won Qualification Group 1 in Trondheim at the expense are still in the race. of two Norwegian teams Tertnes Bergen, Byåsen and Belarus’ Minsk. Along with defending title holders Győr, former Champions France, FYR Macedonia, Spain and Poland are back after not having League winners Budućnost, Krim, Podravka, Larvik HK and Hypo been represented last season. Niederösterreich are all to be found in this season‘s tournament

French champions Metz Handball returned to the group stage, while the Macedonian capital Skopje is also represented again, but not by Kometal, like for many years in the past. Instead, there is a new kid on the block – WHC Vardar SCBT, who are debutants in the CL. The Macedonian powerhouse won Qualification Group 4 in style eliminating Jomi Salerno in the semi-final and Fleury Loiret in the final. Finally, another Champions League debutant, Balonmano Bera Bera is ready to defend the Spanish colors, while Polish champions MKS Lublin are celebrating their comeback to the Champions League for the first time in ten years.

Expert’s view Grit Jurack

“In my opinion goalkeepers are the main key for success. If you have, for example, -Haraldsen in your team, it is much easier to raise a trophy. She is the bonus factor in the strong team of defending champions Győr – and not only because of her Győr are my clear favourites for defending the title.

Just look at Larvik with their experienced duo Lene Rantala and or the two German keepers from Podgorica and from Midtjylland – all of them guarantee stability for the defence sides and provide their teams with the security and easiness you need.

Group A Győr will not let a single point slip out of their hands, as they have even strengthened their squad with Katarina Bulatović. Hypo and Thüringer HC will fight for the second position. Hypo is like a jamboree bag, you never know what’s inside and what to expect from this ‘Brazilian national team’. Without their key She holds almost all possible player Nadja Nadgornaja it will be tough for Thüringer HC, but they have widened and bolstered their records in German women’s squad. Group A preview

Expert’s view Ausra Fridrikas

Ausra Fridrikas is the most successful player in the history of the Women’s EHF Champions League. The Soviet born back court ace won the trophy six times, four times with Hypo Niederösterreich (1994, 1995, 1998, 2000) and twice with Danish side Slagelse (2004, 2005).

In 1999 she was voted World Handball Player of the year. Fridrikas was world champion with the Soviet team in 1990 and after playing for Lithuania she changed her citizenship to Austrian – winning two bronze medals at the EHF EURO 1996 and at the World Championship 1999, when she was also awarded Most Valuable Player of the tournament. On club side she additionally became IHF Cup winner in 1988 with Egle Vilnius, 1993 Champions’ Cup winner with Hypo and EHF Cup winner with Slagelse. Today Fridrikas, who ended her career in 2007, is coaching the Austrian women’s youth national team.

“In my opinion – and I am surely not the only one – Győr are the clear favourite in this group. As the defending champions they have the skills and knowledge to go very far again. They have experience, fighting spirit and the individual class to top this group clearly.

The three remaining teams – Hypo NÖ, Thüringer HC and HCM Baia Mare - will have a close fight for the second spot for the Main Round on an equal level. The daily form, the number of injuries and the ways how to prepare on their opponents will bring the decision, which team will follow Győr to the next stage.

Unfortunately for my former team of Hypo I do not rate their chances very high to make it to the Main Round. I am not convinced by this team, as I don’t know the style they want to play. They have a lot of strong Brazilian players, but in overall they are not stronger than Thüringer HC or Baia Mare. But maybe the Group Matches will show that I was completely wrong.

Thüringer HC have strong players from the technical point of view, especially their intelligent playmaker . But the problem for the German champions is the power. I have recognised that they lack power in the crucial stages of the match, which might be an advantage for their opponents.

Never underestimate Romanian teams – this is also valid for Baia Mare. They have tall girls with highly strong individual skills in their squad. And everybody knows how the frenetic spectators push Romanian teams to their limit on home ground. So maybe the debutant will be the “lucky winner” in the fight for the second spot below Győr.”

15 Győri Audi ETO KC

For nearly a decade they were the hunters, now Győri Audi ETO KC are the hunted for the first time. After breaking their final’s spell in the 2013 edition against Larvik HK and winning the Champions League for the first time, Győr are again one major favourites for winning the competition.

Only two players left the successful team - Jovanka Radičević and Andrea Lekić, both to Vardar Skopje, but on the other hand Győr made one of the most remarkable transfers of the summer: 2012 Champions League winner Katarina Bulatović (Montenegro) arrived at Győr from Romanian side Oltchim Vâlcea – and fully strengthened the squad of coach Ambros Martin as a successor to Lekić.

The rest remained the same – including top star Anita Görbicz, who hopes to recover from a broken finger occurred in a test match, to be fit for the first match of the season.

“The last season was the best in our lives. We won everything possible. This year will be a bit different, because now we are the team that everybody wants to beat.

“We learned how to win last year, and we want to use this knowledge during this season. I really hope that we could manage to repeat our performance, but the road is very long until that, the most important thing is always the next game,” admits the team captain Anita Görbicz. 19 Thüringer HC

For the fifth straight year German Bundesliga is represented by two teams in the Group Matches of the Women’s EHF Champions League – and for the third time in a row, Thüringer HC are part of the competition as German champions. The last season the team of coach Herbert Müller were dominant in Germany, snatching away championship and cup from their rivals HC Leipzig, but narrowly failed to reach the Main Round of the European top flight.

Thüringer HC, which will play their home matches at Nordhausen, have even bolstered their squad for this season. First they signed the German internationals (goalkeeper) and Franziska Mietzner (left back, junior world champion in 2008) and later they completed the most spectacular transfer of German women’s handball this summer: Thanks to his good contacts to Romania, where he was born, Müller managed to sign Spanish top back court ace Alexandrina Barbosa, who had played for Oltchim Vâlcea before and was Champions League finalist in 2011 with Itxako.

Team captain Kerstin Wohlbold hopes for a successful experience. “We are currently in the build-up stage of our team. Hopefully we will find our form and our balance by the start of the Champions League. In my opinion, Gyõr is the main contender for winning the title, Baia Mare have proven their ambitions by beating two Danish teams in the qualification tournament and Hypo have been part of the Champions League since the first day. But despite those opponents we will get our chances – hopefully we are able to grab them,” she said.

23 Hypo Niederösterreich

It took 13 long years for Hypo NÖ to raise their next international trophy. In May they won the Cup Winners’ Cup, after they had taken their last EHF Champions League title in 2000. However, right after this triumph everything changed at the Austrian record champions – starting from the top of the club, where Martin Kweta is the new president.

On the court, the coach changed as well as almost half of the squad – eight players are new, seven left the club. The successor to coach Andras Németh is Danish born Brazil national team coach , who will train eight Brazilian players at Maria Enzersdorf at southern outskirts of Vienna.

The appointment is a logical consequence of the cooperation between the Brazilian handball federation and Hypo – with big challenges lying ahead for Soubak and his team as hosts of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Two Brazilians left, two new arrived. Additionally, two highly experienced Hypo players have returned to the squad: Simona Spiridon and Gabi Rotis-Nagy and the team aim for more success than in previous seasons, when the group matches usually was as far as they got.

“Our objective is the same as before last season – proceeding to the main round. In 2013 we failed, but later won the Cup Winners’ Cup. We prepared well under our new coach, but those positive test results do not guarantee top results in the Champions League. Our group is tough – but we do not have to hide our ambitions and maybe we can cause some upsets,” Alexandra Playing hall Nascimento, current World Handball Player of the Year and Hypo team captain said. 27 HCM Baia Mare

Thanks to their frenetic audience, a great team spirit and three top new arrivals from former EHF Champions League finalists Oltchim Vâlcea, HCM Baia Mare managed to celebrate an unexpected clear qualification for the Group Matches after beating both Danish sides Viborg and Holstebro in the tournament on home court.

Exactly ten years after reaching the Challenge Cup final against German side Borussia Dortmund the dream to be part of the European top flight came true for the first time. Baia Mare finished second in the Romanian league and won the domestic cup – so new challenges and goals are lying ahead, including the first Romanian championship title.

Sport director Daniel Kotecz expects tough matches against opponents like defending champions Győr, reigning Cup Winners’ Cup champions Hypo and German side Thüringer HC. “Since it’s our debut in the Champions League we are glad that we managed to qualify for the group stage. Unfortunately, we are part of the group of death. However, we intend to obtain points in this group and even more, qualification for the next stage or continuing our journey in the Cup Winners’ Cup. We hope to get victories, especially at home games, where we have over 2,500 fans on our side,” he said.

Team captain Claudia Cetateanu also hopes to be successful on home court: “We have very strong opponents, but I hope to win all home matches. Gyõr are definitely the favourite of our group, I think they have a good chance to defend the trophy again.” Playing hall Sala Polivalenta Lascar Pana Bd. 31 Group B preview

Expert’s view Maja Savić

Born in Berane, a town in the north of Montenegro, Maja Savić moved to Podgorica and Budućnost at a young age and went on to play for a decade with the club. In 2004 she made the move to Denmark for the most successful period of her career. Among other trophies, she won two EHF Champions League titles with Slagelse DT in 2005 and 2007, before moving back to Budućnost in 2011 and picking up her third title in 2012.

At the World Championship 2001 in Italy, she was part of All-Star team as the tournament’s best left wing. With Montenegro, she won an Olympic silver in London, after which, she decided to retire.

In January 2013, Savić was appointed national team coach for Montenegro’s women’s under 17 handball team, and led the team to fifth place at the W17 EHF EURO in Poland during the summer. Apart from her national team role, she is also a coach of Danilovgrad, which is a branch of the Budućnost club.

“FTC-Rail Cargo Hungária has a long handball tradition, and they are playing well in this period. In the Hungarian Championship, Ferencváros have already defeated Győr, which means they have a very good team, led by Zsuzsanna Tomori, top scorer of the last season.

As a fan, I will always put Budućnost as favourites to make it for the next round, even though they have lot of new players. Although, realistically, Budućnost are a good team, and I just think they need some more time to put every piece on its place.

FC Midtjylland have always a good team with the Scandinavian system of play and quick handball for all 60 minutes without stopping what makes them difficult to play against. In this group, MKS Lublin might be the weakest team, but no team can afford to stumble against them if they want to stay in the race for the Main Round.

Budućnost, FTC and Midtjylland will fight for first two spots. I hope Budućnost will be one of those two teams. I think they can do it, as they have the quality, and I’d like them to finish at the top of the table in order to have an easier draw for the Main Round.

Budućnost’s first thought is always more on defence than on attack. The fact that their attack is at the moment better than their defence is a proof that all things are not yet in place. I think the language barrier is currently a problem in Budućnost, but it’s an integral part of sport. I believe that the new players of Budućnost will play better after every game.

The competition’s favourites, as in the past seasons, are Győr, Larvik, Budućnost, Krim and FTC, who are always on the top. There is, of course, also Vardar, who brought in lot of new players, but I think they need more time to put together all the pieces, as they by far have most changed the team, almost the whole squad.”

32 Budućnost

After a season of transition, the 2012 Women’s EHF Champions League winners have settled their team a little and added a former World Handball Player of the Year: Cristina Neagu, arriving from Romanian side Oltchim Vâlcea. She arrives alongside four more players from four different foreign countries (Denmark, Poland, Russia and Croatia) to work under Dragan Adžić.

The biggest name to leave the club was Andjela Bulatović, who transferred to Krim Ljubljana.

Although less players transferred compared to the season before, Budućnost admit that they still need some time to rehearse with their squad. After missing out on the semi-final last season, the first goal is to make it among the best eight teams.

In the group matches, Podgorica face Lublin (Poland), FTC Rail Cargo Hungária (Hungary) and Midtjylland, with the duel with the Danish champions, which last occurred two seasons ago, being a special one for Budućnost goalkeeper and team captain Clara Woltering, who will face her former club and national teammate, goalkeeper Sabine Englert.

Woltering is optimistic regarding the upcoming season: “I believe in the new team and the new qualities we have.

“We have a lot of new teammates and it will be an interesting and hopefully successful season,” says Woltering. Playing hall S.C. Only two of 16 Champions League Group Phase participants count on female coaches – aside from Spanish champions Bera Bera, Danish champions FC Midtjylland are one. , who is coaching FCM since April 2012, can count on nearly the same squad as last season, as only two players left and one newcomer arrived.

FCM have an almost all-Danish squad, as only German goalkeeper Sabine Englert and Dutch wing Nicke Groot have a different passport to their teammates – and after Holstebro and Viborg failed in the qualification, Midtjylland are the only club from a country of six Champions League winners within the years 2004 and 2010 (Slagelse and Viborg, three times each) in this year’s competition.

Midtjylland became Danish champions for the second time after re-naming from Ikast-Bording. For FCM manager Torben Kølbæk the upcoming season is something special for his club: “Being the only Danish team in the Champions League, we have an obligation to represent the Danish colours. The Danish league is the best league in the world, meaning a lot of tough additional games for our very few players. We know it is going to be very difficult to proceed and we have the biggest respect for the other teams in our group.”

40 MKS Lublin

It has been ten years since MKS Lublin last played the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches, but now the Polish champions are back.

In six previous attempts between 2005 and 2010 the team of head coach Edward Jankowski did not make it past the qualification stage. This season, courtesy of the EHF seeding list, they qualified directly for the group matches.

Lublin strengthened their squad with seven new players, enhancing their options on the court as it is necessary on the European stage.

Two long-time key players, however, are out for the season: Kristina Repelewska is pregnant and Edyta Danielczuk had to put an end to her professional career because of health problems. She is now part of the team staff.

City, club and - of course - team mascot ‘Kozigrodek’ are eagerly awaiting the start of the EHF Champions League and they hope to make it to the main round. On the domestic level the club wants to win its 17th national championship.

The club’s president, Michal Jastrzebski, allows himself to dream: “It is an honour for our team to be a part of the best and the most prestigious competition.

They hope – regarding their name sponsor – to be on the right track this season: FTC or “Fradi” narrowly missed the semi-finals in the previous EHF Champions League season, but after some improvement even their opponents estimate the Hungarian runners-up as one of the main contenders of the competition.

After beating Lokomotiva Zagreb and their domestic rivals from Érd in the qualification tournament on home court, FTC will face 2011 Champions League champions Budućnost, Midtjylland and Lublin in the expected close Group Phase.

After last season’s Champions League top scorer Zsuzsanna Tomori has recovered from a surgery, “Fradi” additionally signed a high ranked back-up option for the left back position: German international Laura Steinbach. And Steinbach is only one of three foreign players in the nearly all-Hungarian squad aside Belarusian Alena Abramovich and Spanish .

Not only because of those reinforcements FTC hope to finish second in the Hungarian league below reigning Champions League winners from Győr and to clinch a berth in the Main Round again.

49 Group C preview

Expert’s view Nataliya Derepasko

She won the EHF Champions League in 2001 and 2003 and was in the finals in 2006 again: Nataliya Derepasko wrote history with her club Krim Ljubljana. Born in Ukraine, she joined Krim in 1997 and took over the Slovenian citizenship later. Derepasko was twice top scorer of the Champions League (2004, 2006) and after she retired at Krim in 2008, the now 40-year-old back court ace played one season in Italy – but still lives in Ljubljana.

After playing 11 seasons in the Champions League, she has more than enough experience to give an expert view on Group C (including her former club) of the current competition.

“I really do not like to make any predictions in sport, especially not in women’s handball – as it is always difficult to guess what will happen. Every season brings something unexpected, and this year there will be no exception in the Champions League, especially as so many new teams are part of this competition compared to last season.

Two teams in Group C were not playing in the Champions League last season, so it will be hard to predict chances of Metz and Leipzig returning to the European top flight.

Krim can repeat last season’s result, when they reached the semi-final – but this would only be the minimum success for this team. And from my experience, I know that this club has always put the highest possible goals. I watched Krim at this year’s tournament in Ljubljana, which they won despite a strong competition.

I hope that this shows that the team is in good shape, but unfortunately Krim will have to start the season without Jelena Grubisic and Carmen Martin, two leading players of the team. I do not want to underestimate the other three teams, but I think that Krim are the absolute favourite in this group.

Metz, last season’s EHF Cup finalists, have reinforced the structure of the team with the arrival of new players and found the right balance of youth and experience. After returning to the Champions League, I think Metz are ready to take the next step forward and proceed to the Main Round. In my memory the French champions have always been strong in the attack.

HC Leipzig have a good selection of players and they proved their great desire and will to be back in the best 16 teams at the qualification tournament in Trondheim. But in my opinion Leipzig will be hit by missing pregnant goalkeeper Katja Schülke. Susann Müller, who just returned back home from Krim, can bring variety to the attack, but we have to wait to see, if this will be enough.

I do not think Sävehof are ready for big results in this season’s Champions League. The team consist almost exclusively from local players, but it does not mean that this squad is not able to surprise the favourites.”

Despite a number of severe injuries and the fact that it was the main task of coach Tone Tiselj to build-up a complete new team, Krim made it to the semi-finals of the Women’s EHF Champions League last season, before bowing out of competition at the hands of Larvik.

The squad has remained mostly the same over the summer. Some reinforcements arrived from abroad, mostly from the Romanian national team as well as Mentenegrin Anđela Bulatović from Budućnost.

On the other hand, some big names from the golden days of Krim’s two European triumphs in the early 2000’s have ended their career, they are Maryna Vergeliuk and Liudmila Bodnieva.

Expectations are high in the Slovenian capital – from a sporting and organisational point of view. It is their clear goal to reach the first Women’s EHF FINAL4 tournament (if implemented), for which Ljubljana is also a potential venue.

A major success in this season would be the perfect start for the big jubilee year of 2014, when Krim celebrates their 30th anniversary.

Two key players suffered injuries at the beginning of the season (Jelena Grubišić and Carmen Martin), but Tone Tiselj is used to this situation and does in fact have a larger squad at his disposal compared to 2012/13. Playing hall Arena Stožice Club director Goran Dujić is highly optimistic regarding the first stage of this season. 54 Metz Handball

16-time French record champions Metz Handball had been part of the Champions League, but only once – in the 2011/12 season – they made it to the Main Round. In this season it is the clear objective of coach Sandor Rac to proceed among the eight best teams of the competition.

Therefore Metz signed players like tall Ukrainian shooter Anastasija Pidpalova or Czech international Barbora Raníková – but lost French international Katty Piejos to runners-up Fleury, who then failed in the qualification for the Group Phase.

The signs to clinch their berth to the next stage are quite good, as Metz were lucky in the draw, facing last season’s semi-finalists Krim, Sävehof and Leipzig.

In the previous season Metz were close to winning their first ever international title after winning the French double (league and cup): But despite a huge first leg lead in the EHF Cup finals against Danish side Holstebro they finally let the trophy slip from their grasp.

The preparation for the new season was not easy, as two key players – Russian Ekaterina Andryushina and Spanish Lara Gonzalez Ortega – were injured.

The Metz squad is really international, as nine nations are represented.

Sandor Rac, who also is manager of the Lorraine club, hopes – besides defending the domestic Playing hall trophies – to “make it among the best eight teams in Europe”. Team captain Nina Kanto “Les Arenes” Metz expects an equal group: “The first objective is reaching the Main Round of the Champions 5 av. Rue Louis le Debonnaire League. 58 IK Sävehof

While the men’s team of Sävehof IK failed to defend their Swedish championship title, the women remained on course to win their fourth consecutive championship on domestic ground. And as Sweden, due to the EHF seeding list, again has been awarded a direct qualification place, Sävehof avoided the qualification round, which proved too much for them two years ago. So coach Henrik Signell will be on the international stage again and in the 2013/14 season his team will face Krim, Metz and Leipzig in the Group Matches.

The hopes are high to finish more successful than one year ago, when they ranked fourth, winning only one single match (at Volgograd).

The only new player is Icelandic Birna Berg Haraldsdottir (now the only non-Swedish player), while five players left the Gothenburg located team, which is aiming to win the fifth straight Swedish league title and to proceed to the Women’s EHF Champions League Main Round for the first time in their club history.

Team manager Susanna Laursen hopes for a clear improvement:

“We are happy to be here again. Our goal is to do it better than last year. We have kept all players which we wanted and think that we have developed both as a team and individually.

But we are in a tough group, but we know that we are a good team too,” says Laursen, with Playing hall whom team captain Ida Odén agrees with. 62 HC Leipzig

After a two season absence, German record champions HC Leipzig (21 titles) are back in the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches and they want to continue the way they played in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons, when they were the last German women’s team to make it to the Main Round.

Despite the only former EHF Champions League winner in the Leipzig team – Nora Reiche (2010 with Viborg) - has ended her career, the squad seems to be stronger compared to last season, thanks in no small part to the transfer of “homecoming” Susan Müller, who arrived back after three years playing in Denmark (Alaborg, Randers) and Slovenia (Krim).

After Leipzig managed to earn their ticket to the group matches by beating Minsk and Trondheim in the qualification tournament in Trondheim, Müller has the great joy to face her former Krim teammates and Leipzig will additionally face former player Nina Wörz, who is still in the Ljubljana squad.

But a “positive problem” has an effect on the season goals, as last year’s German handball player of the year Katja Schülke, also number 1 in the German goal, is pregnant.

She was replaced during pre-season by Austrian Melanie Herrmann, moving from Frankfurt/ Oder.

Playing hall New coach Thomas Szwed Ørneborg keeps the Danish tradition at the helm, as he is the fifth Arena Leipzig straight HCL coach arriving from Denmark. 67 Group D preview

Expert’s view Marit Breivik

Marit Breivik (58) played 140 internationals for Norway during her active career. She was the Norwegian national coach from 1994 to 2009, where she started the most glorious time in the history of Norway‘s female national team, leading the team to three European championships, one World championship and one Olympic gold medal. In 2009 she was awarded Knight of first Class of the Norwegian Sankt Olavs Order for her efforts as a role model for Norwegian athletes. Today, she is working at Olympiatoppen, an official organisation with the purpose of developing Norwegian top sports.

I see Group D as the second strongest group in the Women’s EHF Champions League Group Matches. In my opinion, Group A is the toughest one, as it contains extremely strong teams such as Győr and Hypo Niederösterreich. What makes Group D almost as strong, though, is the fact that, apart from Larvik, Vardar is also in that group, and that has become a team with a lot of really good players.

I expect Larvik and Vardar to be the two teams who proceed to the Main Round, and with Larvik as the favourites to proceed as group winners. However, I also see Prodravka as a contender. They have a lot of Champions League experience, and they will undoubtedly be a strong outsider, when the main round places are to be decided, while I do not expect Spanish Bera Bera to play that big a part.

I believe that this group may provide one or even two teams for the final round. Larvik have the qualities to reach the final, and I expect them to be better than they were last season, when they reached the final. They have Nora Mørk back at full strength after her long injury break, and they have all their national team players fit, with as a real fighter who will be very important to their team again. Vardar may also be a candidate for the final round, but it may be a question, how soon their many new players will get integrated in the team.

The way I see it, the favorites to reach the semi-finals are Győr, Krim, Larvik and Budućnost, while Hypo and Vardar are interesting outsiders.

68 Larvik

Larvik HK are one of the most consistent teams in the Women’s EHF Champions League. They have been to at least the semi-finals four times in a row since the 2009/10 season. Although the Norwegian record champions and cup winners have only added home grown players to the squad this summer, they have kept all key players and are aiming for another long run in the competition.

Three players have left the squad of coach Ole Gustav Gjekstad: Sara Breistøl, Olga Medvedeva and Pernille Wibe, but the ambitions are high at the 2011 winners and last season’s beaten finalists.

The all-Scandinavian squad, besides Danes Rantala and Bille only Norwegians play for Larvik, include some of the most experienced players of the whole competition like goalkeeping duo Rantala/Leganger, former world handball players Linn-Kristin Riegelhuth-Koren and Gro Hammerseng-Edin as well as and .

For Ole Gustav Gjekstad, who also acts as the sports manager, the goals are set high for the upcoming season, in which Larvik also want to defend all their domestic titles. “After reaching the Champions League finals last year our ambitions will be as high this season. However, our focus will not be stretched further than the next step ahead of us, starting with the group matches and advancing from that stage.

Playing hall One of Larvik’s most influential players, Gro Hammerseng-Edin, shares the high hopes, but Arena Larvik still is humble. “It was a though blow to lose the finals in May, but it proves that we have a Hoffsgate 6 very strong team, which has even more strings to play on this season. We have some strong 3262 Larvik newcomers and I have to say that Nora Mørk’s comeback has been sensational so far. We have Norway also kept all key players from the last season. Our ambitions and expectations are still very Capacity: 4,000 high,” says the confident 33-year-old.

72 Balonmano Bera Bera

The 2012/13 season will go down as a momentous year in the history of Spanish side Balonmano Bera Bera from San Sebastián. The team of former coach Tatiana Garmendia Lopez (now manager) did not only become national champions for the first time ever, but also secured the domestic double, including their third Spanish cup.

The Iberians are debutants in the Champions League after leaving their mark on other EHF European Cup competitions. Bera Bera hope to build a fortress in their Josean Gasca sports center in San Sebastián, as they will need to count on home points, if they try to get ahead of the other top teams in their group like last season’s finals Larvik or new powerhouse Vardar Skopje. Additional opponents are Croatian record champions Podravka.

Before their premiere season in the Champions League Bera Bera changed their coach to Imanol Álvarez, who will also try to defend both domestic trophies with nearly the same squad as in the season before.

Manager Tati Garmendia hopes that her team will gain international experience in the Champions League: “In our first participation in the Group Phase the objective of Bera Bera is humble. Larvik and Podravka are very experienced and Vardar are a great team.”

Team captain Matxalen Ziarsolo hopes for a big interest by their fans on the matches on international stage: “The players have a great enthusiasm for the Champions League. Our Playing hall* group is very complicated with very strong opponents. Anyway, we enjoy the best European Polideportivo Jose A. 75 HC Podravka Vegeta

Podravka Vegeta are in full transition and a season of uncertainty lies ahead. The Croatian record champions from Koprivnica have a new coach, a new interim director and nine newcomers, while ten players left the 20-time domestic champions set for their 20th appearance in the EHF Champions League.

Among those who left are some experienced players such as Lidija Horvat, Sanja Damnjanović and Marta Žderić and in their place came mostly young players, joining from Croatian sides or returning to their home-country, like Jelena Živković and Jelena Trifunović, who moved from Budućnost during the summer.

Even the coach is new: Goran Mrđen is the successor of Neven Hrupec, who had been coaching Podravka for some years.

After four straight years of failing to proceed to the main round, the team are faced with high hurdles once again, as Podravka will face last season’s finalist Larvik (NOR), the new powerhouse from Vardar and Spanish champions (and competition debutants) Bera Bera.

79 WHC Vardar SCBT

From zero to hero in their premiere season? Many experts expect WHC Vardar SCBT as the dark horse in the upcoming Women’s Champions League season. Though Vardar first managed to win their first domestic championship title against city rivals Metalurg and then qualified for the Group Matches of the Champions League for the first time, they are anything but an inexperienced group of players.

After some international stars like Russian goalkeeper Inna Suslina had already joined the squad in the previous season, the club – back by Russian sponsor Sergey Samsonenko – started an impressive shopping spree all over Europe.

Eight new players – including current Champions League winners Andrea Lekić and Jovanka Radicević from Győr or former winners like Ana Djokić - have joined the club as well as former World Handball Player Allison Pineau, who leads a French trio with Siraba Dembele and goalkeeper .

Additionally Vardar managed the homecoming of big Macedonian star Julija Nikolić (former Portjanko) and signed experienced Russian back court ace Tatiana Khmyrova.

But those big names are no burden for coach Indira Kastratovic, who is responsible for the Vardar squad in the second year – and will see her husband Zoran much more often now, as he is in charge for the Vardar men’s team. Playing hall Boris Trajkovski Never before had one city three teams participating in the Champions League (Vardar men and bul. 8 Septemvri bb women and Metalurg men) – so Skopje is writing history in this season. And just to remember: Skopje It has been already twelve years since a team from Skopje won the Women’s EHF Champions FYR Macedonia League trophy, as Kometal including Indira Kastratovic as a player dominated.
