  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

  • Astro Case Study
Case Study ASTRO RADIO: VIRTUAL CONSOLE TECHNOLOGY MALAYSIA’S LARGEST BROADCASTER REINVENTS RADIO STUDIOS WITH LAWO VIRTUAL MIXING Case Study VIRTUAL MIXING AT ASTRO RADIO “A RADICAL RE-IMAGINING OF WHAT AN ON-AIR STUDIO COULD LOOK LIKE.” Astro Radio, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, has become one of Southeast Asia‘s most influential broadcasters since their inception in 1996. With 11 radio formats in multiple languages, including the popular Era, Sinar, Gegar, My, Hitz and other channels, Astro Radio reaches over 15.8 million listeners every week in Malaysia alone. Astro began operations in 1996 and immediately became known for their technological excellence, employing a cutting-edge audio routing system and digital broadcast consoles custom manufactured to meet their technical requirements. But by 2006, Astro needed more capabilities and simpler studio workflows, so that on-air talent could focus on content creation rather than technical duties. “Around 2015, we picked up on the touchscreen trend,” says Bala Murali Subramaney, Astro Radio’s Chief Technology Officer. “We envisioned a full-blown radio broadcast console - on a touchscreen. Not a ‘lite’ console with only some console features nor a touchscreen with a console ‘simulation’.” Astro Radio Broadcast Center, Kuala Lumpur The virtual console Astro engineers envisioned would be a true radio broadcast console, with all the features and functionalities of the professional broadcast consoles they relied on. “We took the best features of our first console, analyzed common operator mistakes and asked for improvement suggestions, then we condensed this data into a comprehensive document and presented it as our mandate to Lawo – whose response was the Zirkon-2s modular broadcast console,” says Bala.

Schliemann et al. BMC Cancer (2020) 20:252 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12885-020-06742-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Change in public awareness of colorectal cancer symptoms following the Be Cancer Alert Campaign in the multi-ethnic population of Malaysia Désirée Schliemann1* , Darishiani Paramasivam2, Maznah Dahlui2,3, Christopher R. Cardwell1, Saunthari Somasundaram4, Nor Saleha Binti Ibrahim Tamin5, Conan Donnelly6, Tin Tin Su2,7 and Michael Donnelly1 Abstract Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) cases are detected late in Malaysia similar to most Asian countries. The Be Cancer Alert Campaign (BCAC) was a culturally adapted mass media campaign designed to improve CRC awareness and reduce late detection in Malaysia. The evaluation of the BCAC-CRC aimed to assess campaign reach, campaign impact and health service use. Methods: Participants aged ≥40 years (n = 730) from randomly selected households in Selangor State Malaysia, completed interview-based assessments. Campaign reach was assessed in terms of responses to an adapted questionnaire that was used in evaluations in other countries. The impact of the campaign was assessed in terms of awareness, confidence to detect symptoms and self-efficacy to discuss symptoms with a doctor as captured by the Cancer Awareness Measure (CAM). CAM was administered before-and-after campaign implementation and responses by BCAC recognisers (i.e. participants who recognised one or more of the BCAC television, radio or print advertisements when prompted) and non-recognisers (i.e. participants who did not recognise any of the BCAC advertisements) were compared analytically. Logistic regression analysed comparative differences in cancer awareness by socio-demographic characteristics and recognition of the BCAC materials.

  • CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.0 Introduction the Purpose of This
CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.0 Introduction The purpose of this descriptive study is to analyse the language used in Malaysian radio advertisements from two aspects - literary devices and vocabulary. This research aims to ascertain and provide evidence to the existence of literary devices in Malaysian radio advertisements. As for the vocabulary, two facets are investigated. Firstly, words and phrases that are frequently employed in the radio advertisement are looked into. Secondly, based on the findings of research done by Leech (1966), a comparison is done on the frequency of verbs and adjectives used in Malaysian radio advertisements. Leech‟s (1966) findings research revealed verbs such as make, get, give, have, see, go, come, buy, need, go know, keep and look were the most frequently used. As for adjectives new, free, fresh, delicious, good/better/best, full, sure, clean, wonderful, special, crisp, fine, big, great, real, easy, bright, extra, safe and rich were found to be frequently used in the same samples. As mentioned in the previous chapter, radio is ubiquitous and has a high level of penetration into the homes and lives of its users. As time goes by, radio advertisements are getting more creative and competitive in order to not only attract but to also be memorable in the hearts and minds of its listeners. 3.1 The Data The data for this research are radio advertisements in English.
