  • Sara Watkins to Release Under the Pepper Tree
SARA WATKINS TO RELEASE UNDER THE PEPPER TREE MARCH 26th VIA NEW WEST RECORDS REUNITES HER NICKEL CREEK & I’M WITH HER BANDMATES & FEATURES GUEST APPEARANCES BY TAYLOR GOLDSMITH OF DAWES, DAVID GARZA, AND WATKINS’ NOW THREE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER Sara Watkins of the Grammy-winning groups Nickel Creek and I’m With Her, as well as The Watkins Family Hour will release Under the Pepper Tree on March 26th via New West Records. The 15-song set was produced by Tyler Chester (Sara Bareilles, Margaret Glaspy) and is the follow up to her critically acclaimed 2016 solo album Young In All The Wrong Ways. Created with families in mind, the personal project encompasses songs Sara embraced as a child herself and brings storytelling, solace, and encouragement to the listener, no matter the age. In addition to two stunning original songs, the album includes Sara’s renditions of “Pure Imagination” from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, The Beatles’ “Good Night,” “Moon River” (originally sung by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and more. Under the Pepper Tree also reunites Sara’s Nickel Creek bandmates Chris Thile and her brother Sean on “Blue Shadows on the Trail” (from the 1986 comedy The Three Amigos), Sara’s I’m With Her bandmates Sarah Jarosz & Aoife O’Donovan on “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” (originally performed by Roy Rogers & Sons of the Pioneers), Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes on Harry Nilsson’s “Blanket for a Sail,” David Garza on Roy Orbison’s “Beautiful Dreamer,” and Sara’s now three-year old daughter on her immensely sweet rendition of The Sound of Music’s “Edelweiss.” Sara admits that she initially felt conflicted about making a children’s record until she realized that perhaps this album could impact a young listener in the same manner as the music from her own childhood affected her.

  • The Secularization of the Repertoire of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, 1949-1992
THE SECULARIZATION OF THE REPERTOIRE OF THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR, 1949-1992 Mark David Porcaro A dissertation submitted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music (Musicology) Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: Thomas Warburton Reader: Severine Neff Reader: Philip Vandermeer Reader: Laurie Maffly-Kipp Reader: Jocelyn Neal © 2006 Mark David Porcaro ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MARK PORCARO: The Secularization of the Repertoire of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, 1949-1992 (Under the direction of Thomas Warburton) In 1997 in the New Yorker, Sidney Harris published a cartoon depicting the “Ethel Mormon Tabernacle Choir” singing “There’s NO business like SHOW business...” Besides the obvious play on the names of Ethel Merman and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the cartoon, in an odd way, is a true-to-life commentary on the image of the Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir (MTC) in the mid-1990s; at this time the Choir was seen as an entertainment ensemble, not just a church choir. This leads us to the central question of this dissertation, what changes took place in the latter part of the twentieth century to secularize the repertoire of the primary choir for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)? In the 1860s, when the MTC began, its sole purpose was to perform for various church meetings, in particular for General Conference of the LDS church which was held in the Tabernacle at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. From the beginning of the twentieth century and escalating during the late 1950s to the early 1960s, the Choir’s role changed from an in-house choir for the LDS church to a choir that also fulfilled a cultural and entertainment function, not only for the LDS church but also for the American public at large.

  • Stephen Foster and American Song a Guide for Singers
STEPHEN FOSTER AND AMERICAN SONG A Guide for Singers A Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Samantha Mowery, B.A., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Doctoral Examination Committee: Dr. Robin Rice, Advisor Approved By Professor Peter Kozma ____________________ Dr. Wayne Redenbarger Advisor Professor Loretta Robinson Graduate Program in Music Copyright Samantha Mowery 2009 ABSTRACT While America has earned a reputation as a world-wide powerhouse in area such as industry and business, its reputation in music has often been questioned. Tracing the history of American folk song evokes questions about the existence of truly American song. These questions are legitimate because our country was founded by people from other countries who brought their own folk song, but the history of our country alone proves the existence of American song. As Americans formed lives for themselves in a new country, the music and subjects of their songs were directly related to the events and life of their newly formed culture. The existence of American song is seen in the vocal works of Stephen Collins Foster. His songs were quickly transmitted orally all over America because of their simple melodies and American subjects. This classifies his music as true American folk-song. While his songs are simple enough to be easily remembered and distributed, they are also lyrical with the classical influence found in art song. These characteristics have attracted singers in a variety of genres to perform his works. ii Foster wrote over 200 songs, yet few of those are known.
