LISTING The first time this listing was issued in this form was in the ICC's 1974 booklet and this was updated in 1982in a publication issued by John Bassett's Crosby Collectors Society. This leads us to the central question of this dissertation, what changes took place in the latter part of the twentieth century to secularize the repertoire of the primary choir for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)? In the 1860s, when the MTC began, its sole purpose was to perform for various church meetings, in particular for General Conference of the LDS church which was held in the Tabernacle at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. From the beginning of the twentieth century and escalating during the late 1950s to the early 1960s, the Choir’s role changed from an in-house choir for the LDS church to a choir that also fulfilled a cultural and entertainment function, not only for the LDS church but also for the American public at large.

Tracing the history of American folk song evokes questions about the existence of truly American song. These questions are legitimate because our country was founded by people from other countries who brought their own folk song, but the history of our country alone proves the existence of American song. As Americans formed lives for themselves in a new country, the music and subjects of their songs were directly related to the events and life of their newly formed culture. The existence of American song is seen in the vocal works of Stephen Collins Foster. His songs were quickly transmitted orally all over America because of their simple melodies and American subjects. This classifies his music as true American folk-song. While his songs are simple enough to be easily remembered and distributed, they are also lyrical with the classical influence found in art song. These characteristics have attracted singers in a variety of genres to perform his works. ii Foster wrote over 200 songs, yet few of those are known.
