Principal’s News Welcome to the 2019 Education Week. This year’s theme is “Every Student, Every Voice” a message we encourage with our students on a daily basis. This week students have been encouraged to invite their parents into the school for a tour of our classrooms on Tuesday between 12 noon and 1pm.

A huge thank you to our School Captain Ella Gruessing who represented our school at the ringing of the Peace Bell in Cowra yesterday, the lantern parade yesterday evening and again early this morning at the re-enactment of the Cowra Breakout at the POW Camp.

Congratulations to our Squash team – Jordan Smith, Sammy Austin, Lucas Ellis and Ryan Ellis - who were successful in their games last week as part of the NSW quarter finals. The team will now meet Woolgoolga in the next round of the competition. Thank you also to Mrs Porter for overseeing the team.

Congratulations also to our Western Area athletics representatives. Many of our students achieved their personal best and had a fantastic day of competition. A special mention goes to Maisie Harrison, Bailey Kennedy and our boys relay team – Dylan Slattery, Connor Munroe, Elliot Blee and Lucas Ellis – who will now go onto represent the school at State level.

Over the weekend a Tractor Trek was held at the showground to raise funds for the Little Wings Charity. This year our local schools were well represented and I would like to thank Mr Rob Ellis for stepping in at the last minute for to represent our school.

Congratulations to Noah Oldfield on being last week’s winner of the school canteen voucher.

Job Expo

On Tuesday 30th June students from year 11 travelled to Bathurst for the 2019 Bathurst Jobs Expo. The event was hosted by Bathurst Council and took place at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre and included stalls from more than 60 em- ployers and training organisations.

All students were greeted by an enthusiastic performance from the team at Charles Sturt University’s Future Moves team, which aims to promote university education to young people from regional and rural locations. This involved a general question and answer session, a discussion of individual career stories, and the overall message that university education is attainable for those that seek it.

The Jobs Expo itself was jam packed with more than 250 students and facilitators for our session, but students were still able to engage with exhibitors who were excited to discuss university options, apprenticeships, traineeships, and other jobs pathways with students. The day ultimately provided something for everyone and all who attended left with armloads of merchandise, lollies, and hopefully even some informative reading material from the many vendors.

Education Week

Canowindra High School will celebrate Education Week by addressing the theme for 2019 “Every Student, Every Voice” through different students speaking on what school means to them on the daily morning assembly.

Canowindra High School would like to extend an open invitation to parents and family to come to the school on Tuesday 6th August between 12 noon and 1 pm for a school tour and classroom visit.

Our Calves have Arrived!

Cows Create Careers is a Dairy Australia Initiative to get information about jobs in the Dairy Industry. At Canowindra High we have a great opportunity for school students to care for two special calves for three weeks. The students have a feeding and caring roster and will be completing an assessment task in groups based on what they learning about the calves.

Cowra Breakout Anniversary

Well done to our School Captain Ella Gruessing who represented Canowindra High School at the 75th Anniversary of the Cowra Breakout Commemorations over the weekend. Ella joined school captains from the district on Saturday afternoon to ring the World Peace Bell before participating in the lantern parade from the Japanese Gardens to the POW Camp site. 239 lanterns representing 239 prisoners who died in the breakout were laid at the foot of the laser cut art installation followed by a very moving ceremony. Ella then attended the 1.50am special event at the POW Campsite commemorating the tragic Cowra Breakout and the moments leading up to the largest prison escape of WWII.

Pictured below is Ella with Seikei High School student Miyu Nakajima (currently staying with the Gruessing family for two weeks) ringing the Peace Bell.
