In that article the long-standing controversy regarding the nature of the ancient musical Modes was briefly noticed, and some reasons w^ere given for dissenting from the views maintained by Westphal, and now very generally accepted. A full discussion of the subject would have taken up more space than was then at the author's disposal, and he accordingly pro- posed to the Delegates of the Clarendon Press to treat the question in a separate form. He has now to thank them for undertaking the publication of a work which is necessarily addressed to a very limited circle.

    The geodetic sciences in Byzantium Dimitrios A. Rossikopoulos Department of Geodesy and Surveying, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki [email protected] Abstract: Many historians of science consider that geodeasia, a term used by Aristotle meaning "surveying", was not particularly flourishing in Byzantium. However, like “lo- gistiki” (practical arithmetic), it has never ceased to be taught, not only at public universi- ties and ecclesiastical schools, as well as by private tutors. Besides that these two fields had to do with problems of daily life, Byzantines considered them necessary prerequisite for someone who wished to study philosophy. So, they did not only confine themselves to copying and saving the ancient texts, but they also wrote new ones, where they were ana- lyzing their empirical discoveries and their technological achievements. This is the subject of this paper, a retrospect of the numerous manuscripts of the Byzantine period that refer to the development of geodesy both in teaching and practices of surveying, as well as to mat- ters relating to the views about the shape of the earth, the cartography, the positioning in travels and generally the sciences of mapping. Περίληψη: Πολλοί ιστορικοί των επιστημών θεωρούν ότι η γεωδαισία, όρος που χρησι- μοποίησε ο Αριστοτέλης για να ορίσει την πρακτική γεωμετρία, την τοπογραφία, δεν είχε ιδιαίτερη άνθιση στο Βυζάντιο.     I Trinal Unity: The Sources, Traditions, and Craftsmanship of Milton’s "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity" LeMoyne Mercer A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 1978 ABSTRACT Although source study is a technique which has been very productive in revealing aspects of Milton’s artistry it has not been heretofore applied to n0n the Morning of Christ’s Nativity." This general source study focused particularly on Milton’s use of the Golden-Age tradition as a structurally significant aspect of the poem. Critical attention to the Nativity Ode has attributed structural unity in the poem to Milton's use of images of light/darkness and harmony/discord. This imagery is applied to three themes in the Nativity Ode: the universal peace, the music of the spheres, and the flight of the false gods. An investigation of the Golden-Age tradition revealed that these three themes are also unified by their relationship to the tradition as well as by Milton’s use of imagery. The Roman Saturnalia, which celebrated the return of Saturn and the Golden Age, is an analogue to Christmas. The universal peace which reigned at the Nativity is a characteristic of the Golden Age and the Saturnalia. The music of the spheres, which joins the angel choir at the Nativity, was audible only during man's state of innocence — the Golden Age. The flight of the false gods which occurred at the Nativity is also an aspect of Saturn’s reassertion of his position as the "true god" during the Saturnalia.

    THE INTERPRETATION OF GREEK MUSIC I. INTONATION IN GENERAL Inadequacy of our Theory. To whoever may desire to understand the music of ancient Greece, I would recommend that he put away from his mind that sense of superiority which our progress in counterpoint, harmony, form and orchestration has engendered, and devote his attention to the shortcomings of our music, for they relate to those very matters concerning which Greek music has the most to teach us. Our music has come down to us from remote ages through the Greek system. The first stage in its progress was marked by the collection of a multiplicity of Harmonies and modes, not unlike those upon which the classical music of India is based. Of the diatonic scales, some were soft, employing septimal or soft intervals, and others were hard, employing semi- tones, and major and minor tones, differing among themselves in the order in which these intervals were strung together. The Greeks may have added to this collection. Their chief contributions to musical progress, however, were instrumental heterophony and the science of intervals. They were driven to the use of the former by the tyranny of the ' metrici.' Thus the long and short of Greek poetry led indirectly to the harmonic system of music, which is one of the main achievements of European civilisation. The founda- tions of musical science were laid by Pythagoras. The results of his labours were soon apparent in the classification of the enormous number of scales in use, the adoption of a musical notation based upon an intricate system of correlated keys, and the art of modulation.
