PLAYING PIONEER: IMAGINATION, MYTHOLOGY, ARTISTRY AND PLAY IN LAURA INGALLS WILDER’S LITTLE HOUSE By ANNA LOCKHART A thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in English Written under the direction of Holly Blackford And approved by _____________________________ Dr. Holly Blackford _____________________________ Dr. Carol Singley Camden, New Jersey January 2017 THESIS ABSTRACT “Playing Pioneer: Imagination, Mythology, Artistry and Play in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House” By ANNA LOCKHART Thesis Director: Holly Blackford Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series is a fictionalized account of Wilder’s childhood growing up in a family settling the American frontier in the late nineteenth- century. As much as the series is about childhood and the idyllic space of the blank, uncultivated frontier, it is about a girl growing into a woman, replacing childhood play and dreams with an occupation, sense of meaning, and location as an adult, woman, citizen, and artist. In this essay, I explore the depictions of play in the series as their various iterations show Laura’s departure from childhood and mirror the cultivation and development of the frontier itself. In my reading, I locate four distinct elements of play to answer these questions: Laura’s interactions and negotiations with various doll figures; her use of play as a tool to explore and bend boundaries and gender prescriptions; play as an industrious act intermingled with work; and her play with words, which allows her to transition out of childhood into a meaningful role as artist, playing an important role in the mythologizing and narration of the American frontier story. -

Negotiating Traditional Gender Roles in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little Town on The Prairie Maria Angelina Chandra Titien Diah Soelistyarini ABSTRACT This paper attempt to examine how women negotiated traditional gender roles in the nineteenth century America as depicted in Wilder’s novel Little Town on the Prairie. In order to reveal how Laura Ingalls, the main character, accepts or refuses to assume the traditional gender roles, this study analyzes the characterization of Laura Ingalls using Feminist literary criticism. Laura’s negotiation is examined by comparing her portrayal in the novel with the ideal roles of women in the nineteenth century proposed by Wollstonecraft and Beecher and Stowe. This study reveals that throughout the novel Laura has made an effort to negotiate with traditional gender roles by accepting some of the patriarchal rules, while at the same time refusing some others. On the one hand, Laura fits some criteria of an ideal woman proposed by Beecher and Stowe as proponents of traditional gender roles. On the other hand, Laura also fits some other criteria of an ideal woman proposed by Wollstonecraft as an opponent of traditional gender roles. Introduction Little Town on the Prairie is the seventh book of Little House series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder based on her childhood in Wisconsin, USA. Considered as a masterpiece in classic American children’s literature, Wilder’s Little House series have become an interesting topic for academic research. In a study entitled Constructing the Little House: Gender, Culture, and Laura Ingalls, Romines discusses all the books in Little House series and dedicates one chapter for Little Town on the Prairie. -

ALISON ARNGRIM Bio In Brief New York Times Best Selling author of “Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated”, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series "Little House On The Prairie," and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television and stage appearances. Her one woman show “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch”, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Alison performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all French version titled: “Confessions d’une Garce de La Prairie”. In 1986 when her friend and "Little House husband" co-star, Steve Tracy, passed away due to complications of HIV/AIDS, Alison began volunteering at AIDS Project Los Angeles. Her duties ranged from working on the Southern California AIDS Hotline and the APLA food bank, to chairing the steering committee of the volunteer speakers bureau and developing “Safer Sex” workshops. She has provided AIDS education to doctors, nurses, prison inmates, service clubs, churches, department stores and schools, written AIDS education articles for the magazines "Frontiers" and "Designers West”, and spent seven years hosting the APLA educational cable television show, "AIDS Vision". In 1992, Joel Wachs presented Alison with a resolution by the Los Angeles City Council commending her on her work on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. -
