HOLY BAPTISM 2012 From the Vicar…. Sunday 11th December at St Peter’s, During the three months of last autumn, September, October and Jack John Warren November, I was very fortunate in being granted sabbatical leave, sometimes know as study leave. It was a wonderful three months, in which I was given a ‘Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father’ real chance to do some serious reading, praying and thinking, as well as the opportunity to recharge my energy batteries. I realise that I was extremely HOLY MATRIMONY fortunate to have this spell and I am hugely grateful to the Diocese of Salisbury for offering me this chance and to my colleagues here in the parish for taking so Saturday 17th December at St Thomas à Becket, Lydlinch much responsibility during this time. Adrian Denis Cossins and Laura Elizabeth Matthews The sabbatical gave me a long-awaited opening to study the life and works of someone I have for many years found inspirational. His name was ‘Thos whom God has joined together, let no-one put asunder’ Juan de Yepes, but he is usually known as John of the Cross (Juan de la Cruz). He lived in Spain in the 16th century. He was a monk, a poet, a writer, a spiritual FUNERALS director but above all a passionate Christian disciple, who loved God, served Christ with all his energy and encouraged others to do the same. Tuesday 27th September at St Mary’s, Sturminster Newton One of the remarkable things about this John was that he was Gordon Henry Gardener Woods 83 years apparently very small of stature. Reports vary, but it is certain that he was no taller than 5’ 1” and may even have been as small as 4’ 11”. Even for 400 years Friday 11th November at St Mary’s, Sturminster Newton ago that was tiny. But his great monastic elder and close confidante, Teresa of Doris Ellen Charles 97 years Avila, dubbed him ‘this little man who was big before God.’ Perhaps it was John’s lack of inches that contributed to the rough and tough treatment to which Friday 25th November at St Mary’s, Sturminster Newton he was subjected at several times in his life. It seems hard to understand but John Barbet even a man who was so passionate for his faith and for the spiritual nourishment of others had to endure some appalling treatment at times in his life. The Thursday 8th December at St Mary’s, Sturminster Newton toughest period of all was the 9 months that he spent in a Toledo prison cell with Kenneth Pickering 63 years only one little window high up in the wall for daylight. His subsequent escape is the stuff of legend but one cannot help wondering if his diminutive size Monday 12th December at St Peter’s, Hinton St Mary contributed to the regular bouts of bullying he had to endure. But what is so Mohammed ‘Azad’ Ramkoleea striking is that this little man achieved huge things for God, and much later the Church was to recognise this as he was made a saint and a doctor of the ‘May they rest in peace and rise in glory’ Church, a rare accolade. These days, we have become used to the unwritten maxim that big ATTENTION ALL ST MARY'S FLOWER ARRANGERS! is better. World cities vie with each other for the tallest building, the fat bonuses We have a new team taking over the organisation of flower arranging in the go to the fattest cats, the Premier footballs clubs with the richest owners win all church. Jesus very consciously spent time with the outcasts and the marginalised, and preached a rota; Paula Harris (01258 471147) will continue to look after wedding flowers, good news that offered a preferential option for the poor, for the little man and and Sylvia May (01258 473189) will be the co-ordinator of all that goes on. woman.
