It was firs~ published in September 1948 as the Fresh man Handbook. This year it is available for all students in the hope that it will be a useful and profitable guide. Its purpose is to anticipate and answer questions you may have, to acquaint you with the history of P.M.C., to apprise you of academic rules and regulations, to point out what is ex pected of you by the faculty and yo~ fel low students, and to urge you to participate in some extra-curricular activity. It is only since the last war that P.M.C. has had a civilian student body in addition to its corps of cadets. It has been gratify ing to see these two groups of college stu dents work hand in hand toward a common goal-a stronger and better P.M.C. I am sure that you, too, will cooperate in the same manner. -

Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society!
1 WINTER 2018 Moving Forward at the Detroit Historical Society! At the Detroit Historical Society, 2017 has been a time of transformation. Three years of work on Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward came to fruition this year, and the efforts that went into it led us to adopt a new model for engaging the public in creating programming and exhibitions in our museums. Our work is stronger for it, as evidenced by positive reviews, awards and steady increases in visitor numbers driven by the Detroit 67: Perspectives exhibition. Most importantly, however, our organization changed from the inside out. Our model for engagement, Engage, Refect, Act (ERA), incorporates a three-step process for commencing work on new programs and exhibitions at our museums: engage the community, refect on what we learn and inspire visitors to action based on the relevance of history to today. We are committed to applying this model internally and externally as we work to tell Detroit’s stories and why they matter. That means that we are engaging the talents of our staff across departments to strengthen and streamline our work in the same way that we are engaging the public and other cultural institutions to inform upcoming programs and exhibits. In October, the Detroit Historical Society and our partners at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History were honored with the Michigan Museum Association’s 2017 Peninsulas Prize in recognition of our unique collaboration on the Detroit 67 project. This was wonderful evidence of the transformational power of the ERA model. -

A Critical Review of Acquisitions within the Australian Vocational Education and Training Sector 2012 to 2017 Kristina M. Nicholls Victoria University Business School Submitted in fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Business Administration 2020 Abstract A Critical Review of Acquisitions within the Vocational Education and Training Sector 2012 to 2017 Organisations often look to acquisitions as a means of achieving their growth strategy. However, notwithstanding the theoretical motivations for engaging in acquisitions, research has shown that the acquiring organisation, following the acquisition, frequently experiences a fall in share price and degraded operating performance. Given the failure rates that are conservatively estimated at over 50%, the issue of acquisitions is worthy of inquiry in order to determine what factors make for a successful or alternately an unsuccessful outcome. The focus of this study is the vocational education sector in Australia, where private registered training organisations [RTOs] adopted acquisitions as a strategy to increase their market share and/or support growth strategies prompted by deregulation and a multi-billion dollar training investment by both Australian State and Federal governments in the past ten years. Fuelled by these changes in Government policy, there was a dramatic growth in RTO acquisitions between the period 2012 and 2017. Many of these acquisitions ended in failure, including several RTOs that listed on the Australian Stock Exchange [ASX]. This study investigates acquisitions of Australian RTOs, focusing on the period from 2012 to 2017 [study period]. The aim is to understand what factors contributed to the success and/or failure of acquisitions of registered training organisations in the Australian Private Education Sector. -

But indeed, ‘Why mouthpieces?’ There seem to be two main answers: one to enable the lips to access a tube too narrow for the lips to access unaided, and the other depends on what the trumpeter’s expectations are for the instrument to achieve. In our own culture, from the late Renaissance and Early Baroque onwards, trumpeters expected a great deal, as we can see in Bendinelli’s and Fantini’s tutors, both of which are avail- able in facsimile, and in the concert repertoire from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo onwards. As a result, mouthpieces were already large, both wide enough and deep enough to allow the player to bend the 11th and 13th partials and other notes easily. The transition from the base of the cup into the backbore was a sharp edge. -

On average, Americans consume 4,000 mg of sodium daily, with 75 percent of that intake coming from the processed foods consumed on a regular basis. In an effort to lower sodium intake, the American Heart Association is collaborating with New York City to create a nationwide campaign, the National Salt Reduction Initiative. The goal is part of a plan that aims to improve cardiovascular health and help people reduce the sodium they eat to fewer than 1,500 mg per day by the year 2020.
