Solidarity Care How to Take Care of Each Other in Times of Struggle Myisha Cherry Volume 3, Number 1 Spring 2020 DOI: 10.25335/PPJ.3.1-4 Solidarity Care How to Take Care of Each Other in Times of Struggle Myisha Cherry Volume 3, Number 1 Spring 2020 DOI: 10.25335/PPJ.3.1-4 Abstract Being aware of social injustices can cause existential and mental pain; comes with a burden; and may impede a flourishing life. However, I shall argue that this is not a reason to despair or to choose to be willfully ignorant. Rather, it’s a reason to conclude that being conscious is not enough. Rather, during times of oppression, resisters must also prioritize well-being. One way to do this is by extending what I refer to as solidarity care. I begin by providing an account of solidarity care. I then offer pragmatic ways in which one can extend solidarity care to others. I conclude by responding to two possible worries. Without community there is no liberation, only the most vulnerable and temporary armistice between an individual and her oppression. —Audre Lorde (2007) 1. Djupe, Advisor Senior Honors Research Abstract In recent years, anti-Zionism and anti-Israel rhetoric have become hallmarks of the American Left. Moreover, many on the Left have downplayed or denied the severity of antisemitism. This paper seeks to determine how widespread overt and latent antisemitism are among the Left. More specically, it seeks to determine if there is a double standard applied to antisemitism that could be indicative of latent antisemitism as well as if the anti-Zionist rhetoric is the result of latent antisemitism. To do so, respondents in a nationally-representative survey were given questions designed to determine overt antisemitism, as well as two dierent experiments designed to elicit latent antisemitism. The results showed that latent antisemitism does not appear for any of the ideological groups on the Left in the context of ghting discrimination. However, it does appear among Liberals as it relates to self-determination and Progressives when Israel is mentioned. These ndings help illuminate how the Left views antisemitism, the relationship between anti-Zionism and the Left, as well as how widespread latent and overt antisemitism are among the Left. 1 Introduction Where the Right ghts for freedom and liberty, the Left ghts for equality and egalitarianism. Black Lives Matter and Black Power. Under the direction of DR. RICHARD LEEMAN Today, Black Americans face the same foes as in previous efforts to secure civil rights. Over the last decade, names like Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, Keith Lamont Scott, Philando Castile, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor join those of Emmett Till, Rodney King and countless others as causalities of white supremacy. This recurrence has ignited and unified a generation of activists through the phrase “Black Lives Matter.” The Black Lives Matter movement, like the Black Power movement, has named Blackness as a nexus for racial equity. For both movements, the specification of Blackness responded to a need to differentiate the experiences of Black people under racial oppression from others and binds members of this oppressed community to one another. In juxtaposition, both movements also trace the progression of Black centered social justice efforts led by and for members of the Black community who identify with the use of justified anger against injustice. These movements serve as critiques of the mainstream Civil Rights Movement and the ways that its leaders prioritized the feelings and permissions of white people. The objective of this thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of Black Power and Black Lives Matter in order to better understand the rhetorical strategies of the latter, contemporary movement.

  • Blue Lives Matter
    COP FRAGILITY AND BLUE LIVES MATTER Frank Rudy Cooper* There is a new police criticism. Numerous high-profile police killings of unarmed blacks between 2012–2016 sparked the movements that came to be known as Black Lives Matter, #SayHerName, and so on. That criticism merges race-based activism with intersectional concerns about violence against women, including trans women. There is also a new police resistance to criticism. It fits within the tradition of the “Blue Wall of Silence,” but also includes a new pro-police movement known as Blue Lives Matter. The Blue Lives Matter movement makes the dubious claim that there is a war on police and counter attacks by calling for making assaults on police hate crimes akin to those address- ing attacks on historically oppressed groups. Legal scholarship has not comprehensively considered the impact of the new police criticism on the police. It is especially remiss in attending to the implications of Blue Lives Matter as police resistance to criticism. This Article is the first to do so. This Article illuminates a heretofore unrecognized source of police resistance to criticism by utilizing diversity trainer and New York Times best-selling author Robin DiAngelo’s recent theory of white fragility. “White fragility” captures many whites’ reluctance to discuss ongoing rac- ism, or even that whiteness creates a distinct set of experiences and per- spectives. White fragility is based on two myths: the ideas that one could be an unraced and purely neutral individual—false objectivity—and that only evil people perpetuate racial subordination—bad intent theory. Cop fragility is an analogous oversensitivity to criticism that blocks necessary conversations about race and policing.
