GEORGE KOURY HEAD COACH . 14TH SEASON . USAFA, 1993

No stranger to Air Force golf, George Koury is in his 14th season as the head coach of the Academy’s golf program. Before taking over the program as head coach in 2002, Koury spent three seasons as an assistant, working with both the varsity and the junior varsity programs. He was also a member of the Falcons’ golf team from 1990-93, where he served as team captain and earned MVP honors in his fi nal year.

Koury began his head coaching career at the start of the 2002-03 season, when he took over for legendary coach Gene Miranda, who had spent 25 years at the helm of the Falcons’ program. The transi on from assistant to head coach was seamless for Koury and he has found success throughout his s nt with Air Force.

The Falcons sha ered the Academy record for team scoring average by more than fi ve strokes per tournament in 2012-13, while also pos ng a school-record three-round total of 829 – a score that be ered the previous record by 11 strokes – during a winning performance at the Jack- rabbit Invita onal. Air Force fi nished fourth at the Mountain West Championships in back-to-back years (2013, 2014) to match the best team fi nish at a conference tournament in program history. He also coached Kyle Westmoreland to a fourth-place individual fi nish in 2014, which was the best conference fi nish since 1985.

He has helped the Falcons con nue their unprecedented dominance at the annual Service Academy Golf Classic, bringing home the champi- onship trophy in each of his seasons at the helm of the program. In the fall of 2005, Koury helped guide Air Force to a fi rst-place fi nish at the season-opening Falcon Invita onal, marking the team’s fi rst outright championship at its own tournament since 1969. Air Force, which claimed another Falcon Invita onal tle in 2013, has recorded 13 team wins under Koury’s leadership.

Koury has been successful in recrui ng, bringing in several players that have started as freshmen, including Westmoreland, 2007 graduate Tyler Goulding, who ranks among the most successful golfers in Academy history, and 2010 graduate Tom Whitney, a par cipant in both the 2009 U.S. Publinks and U.S. Amateur Tournaments. Koury guided both Goulding and Whitney to all-conference honors, while Goulding, Whitney and Westmoreland all to the NCAA Regional Championships. Koury has also coached a pair of All-America Scholars in Whitney and 2005 graduate Sco Redmond, and Whitney has con nued to excel on the course, post-gradua on, collec ng four professional wins.

Meanwhile, Koury’s golfers hold 20 of the 25 lowest individual tournament scores in school history.

A constant supporter of the game, Koury has served as numerous commi ees for the Golf Coaches Associa on of America, including the chair of the Coach of the Year commi ee and Division I representa ve to the CGAA Board.

Koury graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1993 with a degree in engineering mechanics. Following gradua on, he was sta oned in San Antonio, Texas, where he served as a research and development engineer for robo cs technologies. In 1996, he moved to Okinawa, Japan, and served as a civil engineer un l returning to the Academy in June of 1999.

He is married to the former Jacki Thomas and has three children, David (13), Hannah (10) and Mary (7).

Eisenhower Golf Course at the Academy has won acclaim as being one of the best courses in Colorado. Nestled in the foothills of the Rampart Range, the Blue Course was first opened in 1959. It is named after former President Dwight. D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony.

Home to the annual Falcon Invitational (for- merly the Pikes Peak Invitational), the course has been challenged by some of golf’s best, including Jay Don Blake, Hale Irwin, Tim Herron, Steve Jones, Jimmy Demaret, Tom Kite, Johnny Miller, Andy North, Mike Reid, Sam Snead, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods.

Publications, including Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest and Golf Week, have named Eisenhower as one of the 10 best courses on a college campus, while Golf Digest ranked the it as the third-best course in Colorado.

GENE MIRANDA FALCON INVITATIONAL

For nearly 50 years, some of the best golfers in the college ranks have come to the Academy to partici- pate in the annual Falcon Invitational. The 54-hole tournament is held in September on the Eisenhower (Blue) Course and features teams from all over the country. In 2003, the event was renamed the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, in honor of the legendary coach who headed up the program for 25 years.

A 1962 graduate of San Jose State, Miranda joined the Air Force in 1963 and served as the Academy’s junior varsity coach from 1968-71. In 1971, Miranda took over the reins as the varsity coach, where he held the position until his retirement as a lieutenant in 1983. After a five-year retirement, Miranda returned as head coach in 1988, remaining until 2002. During Miranda’s tenure, the Falcons posted a 180-5 dual record and won 12 tournaments. Inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1998, Miranda currently serves as the Director of Instruction at Eisenhower Golf Course.

Miranda was inducted into the Air Force Athletics' Hall of Fame, as a member of the Class of 2015.

Air Force Golf AIR FORCE ATHLETICS

Few schools in the country have an athle c program as extensive as the Air Force Academy’s.

The goals of the athle c program are to enhance the physical condi oning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for offi cership, to teach leadership in a compe ve environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athle c program: intercollegiate athle cs, intramurals and physical educa on.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-sanc oned teams, facing some of the top compe on in the na on. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnas cs, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifl e, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fi elds women’s teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnas cs, rifl e, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addi on, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA pro- grams; boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai’i (football only), Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many na onally ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which is emblema c of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 18 mes, which is more than any other academy.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’s a modern, versa le structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is fi ve stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fi elds laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and mul purpose area. The three sec ons have a combined sea ng capacity of more than 9,000. Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a sea ng capacity of 2,470, while the mul purpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and fi eld compe ons.

The $4.1-million renova on to the Cadet Outdoor Complex, the outdoor home of the Air Force track and fi eld team, was completed in the fall of 2011 and is one of the premier track and fi eld facili es in the na on. The Holaday Athle c Center, a $15.5 million completely donor funded indoor training facility, was completed in July 2011. The Cadet Fitness Center, a $9.5 million, Military Construc on project, home of the Air Force Academy’s fencing prac ce facility and aerobics/weight li ing facility that contains a nearly 33-foot climbing wall, opened in May 2012.
