Michael Jackson the Girl Is Mine The Girl Is Mine Michael Jackson Every night she walks right in my dreams Since I met her from the start I'm so proud I am the only one Who is special in her heart The girl is mine The doggone girl is mine I know she's mine Because the doggone girl is mine I don't understand the way you think Saying that she's yours not mine Sending roses and your silly dreams Really just a waste of time Because she's mine The doggone girl is mine Don't waste your time Because the doggone girl is mine I love you more than he (Take you anywhere) But I love you endlessly (Loving we will share) So come and go with me to one town But we both cannot have her So it's one or the other And one day you'll discover That she's my girl forever and ever I don't build your hopes to be let down 'Cause I really feel it's time I know she'll tell you I'm the one for her 'Cause she said I blow her mind The girl is mine The doggone girl is mine Don't waste your time Because the doggone girl is mine She's mine, she's mine No, no, no, she's mine The girl is mine, the girl is mine The girl is mine, the girl is mine The girl is mine (Mine, mine) Yep, she's mine (Mine, mine) The girl is mine (Mine, mine) Yep, she's mine (Mine, mine) Don't waste your time Because the doggone girl is mine The girl is mine Michael, we're not going to fight about this, okay? Paul, I think I told you, I'm a lover not a fighter I've heard it all before, Michael She told me that I'm her forever lover You know, don't you remember? Well, after loving me, she said she couldn't love another Is that what she said? Yes, she said it, you keep dreaming I don't believe it (Mine, mine) No The girl is mine (Mine, mine, mine) No mine No mine (Mine, mine, mine) She is mine, mine, mine, mine, mine (Mine, mine, mine) The girls is mine (Mine, mine, mine) No girl is mine (Mine, mine, mine) The girl is mine The girl is mine Girl is mine (Mine, mine, mine) No she is mine Tištěno z pisnicky-akordy.cz Sponzor: www.srovnavac.cz - vyberte si pojištění online! I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity by Sara Tenenbaum B.A. in American Studies, May 2006, Brandeis University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis Directed by James A. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

“Thriller”--Michael Jackson (1982) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Joe Vogel (guest post)* Original album Original label Michael Jackson Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” changed the trajectory of music—the way it sounded, the way it felt, the way it looked, the way it was consumed. Only a handful of albums come anywhere close to its seismic cultural impact: the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper,” Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon,” Nirvana’s “Nevermind.” Yet “Thriller” remains, by far, the best-selling album of all time. Current estimates put U.S. sales at close to 35 million, and global sales at over 110 million. Its success is all the more remarkable given the context. In 1982, the United States was still in the midst of a deep recession as unemployment reached a four-decade high (10.8 percent). Record companies were laying people off in droves. Top 40 radio had all but died, as stale classic rock (AOR) dominated the airwaves. Disco had faded. MTV was still in its infancy. As “The New York Times” puts it: “There had never been a bleaker year for pop than 1982.” And then came “Thriller.” The album hit record stores in the fall of ‘82. It’s difficult to get beyond the layers of accolades and imagine the sense of excitement and discovery for listeners hearing it for the first time--before the music videos, before the stratospheric sales numbers and awards, before it became ingrained in our cultural DNA. The compact disc (CD) was made commercially available that same year, but the vast majority of listeners purchased the album as an LP or cassette tape (the latter of which outsold records by 1983).
