  • 'Presence' in Absentia: Experiencing Performance As Documentation
39 Introduction: Amelia Jones Harmony Bench n her 1997 essay “‘Presence’ in Absentia: Experiencing Performance as Documentation,” arts scholar Amelia Jones offers a précis of her 1998 monograph Body Art: Performing Ithe Subject, while orienting the discussion toward the problematics of analyzing live art exclusively through its documentation. Listing her age when Yoko Ono, Vito Acconci, Valie Export, and others were performing key works, Jones reflects on the impracticability of her presence at these events—she was 10, or 12, or 15, etc. Her absence does not deter her, however, from critically analyzing work she did not witness. She notes, “I approach body artworks through their photographic, textual, oral, video, and/or film traces. I would like to argue, however, that the problems raised by my absence (my not having been there) are largely logistical rather than ethical or hermeneutic. That is, while the experience of viewing a photograph and reading a text is clearly different from that of sitting in a small room watching an artist perform, neither has a privileged relationship to the historical ‘truth’ of the performance . .”1 Aside from dance documentaries and documentations that fill dance history professors’ shelves, screendance has not generally been concerned with the truth-bearing mark of authenticity that Jones describes. As a discipline, however, dance is haunted by that rhetoric. Like live art, body art, and/or performance art, dance as a scholarly and practical discourse clings to the ‘live’ dancing body against the onslaught of media—even when choreographers integrate video or projected media elements into their stage-based performances.

  • The Truth About What Michael Jackson Had (And Didn't Have) in His Bedroom
Raven Woods, Contributor Raven Woods is an author, educator, pop culture journalist and author of Allforloveblog The Truth About What Michael Jackson Had (And Didn't Have) In His Bedroom This is all old news from a decade ago, and there is absolutely nothing in those reports that hasn't already had its day in court. HUFFPOST 07/08/2016 Updated Jul 14, 2016 Last week, as the world geared up to remember Michael Jackson on his seventh death anniversary, a deluge of negative publicity hit regarding allegations of "disturbing" child porn that was supposedly uncovered during the 2003 raid of Neverland, conducted prior to Jackson's 2004 indictment on charges of molesting a minor. The highly publicized trial in 2005 resulted in Jackson's acquittal on all fourteen counts. The problem is that the police documents in question and the list of items seized from Neverland are not "new" or "recently unearthed" documents, as some media outlets have mistakenly claimed in an effort to bolster salacious headlines. These were all items that were entered in court back in 2005 ― items that were well known to both the prosecution and defense and were presented before both Judge Melville and the jury. None of the items seized from Neverland fit the legal definition of child pornography, and in fact many of the items that are currently creating the most media hysteria were not pornographic at all. They were legal art books; a few of them containing some examples of adult erotica, but again, these were not titles that could be in any way deemed as pornographic or even obscene.

  • Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).
