"A Settlement Institution of the Southern Appalachians is a private, non-profit, rural organization in the Southern Appalachians designed to promote and provide programs, services, and development with the immediate community or nearby surrounding areas in which it is located." In the document, individual reports (by state) of each institution provide information such as character and philosophy of the institution, governing structures, staff resources, facilities, and history. Additionally, a profile of each institution describes types of programs, dates of origin, affiliations, and project area trends. Individual reports of 6 agencies and a list of institutional reference materials are included. It is concluded that settlement institutions contribute to the future of Appalachia by utilizing local ties and the freedom of being private. By bringing innovation and change in their areas of influence, these institutions help to provide for the needs of Appalachia's culture. Settlement School, 1902-1910) located in the eastern Kentucky Appalachian Mountain region. Three themes emerged from the data: the social dimension in handiwork, social production of the handiwork, and innovative educational practices. The Hindman Settlement School, still in operation today, was respected for its academics, handiwork, and response to the region's educational needs. It was influenced by innovative education reforms of Jane Addams and John Dewey. (Contains 27 references.) Looking Back: Public Library History Outlined in Article By Jonathan Jeffrey Lena B. Nofcier penned the following article, "History of the Public Library Movement in Kentucky," for the Kentucky Library Commission's Biennial Report , volume 13, 1933-1935. In it she chronicles the slow development of public libraries in the Commonwealth. Nofcier was a dedicated advocate for libraries, serving as state chairman of the PTA's library service committee, as secretary of the Library Extension Division of the Kentucky Library Commission, and as president of the Kentucky Library Association in 1939. “No agency or department in Kentucky was changed with the responsibility of gathering, compiling and publishing library information or statistics until the Kentucky Library Commission was established in 1910. For earlier information it is necessary to consult the Acts of the General Assembly, state, county and city histories and the minutes of library companies, associations, clubs and boards. -

Throughout society. funeral rttes and changes in them evince values of family. communlty. and religion. Visitors to the area. whether settlement-school teachers. preachers. or researchers. vMdly descrtbed deathbeds. burta1s. and funeral occasions which illuminate local values. Reflecting the wrtters' urban prejudices. these journals and publications along with contemporary newspaper accounts provide Insight Into southeastern Kentucky mourning customs during the years 1880 to 1915. Although the turn of the twentieth century brought change In the way urban dwellers dealt with mourning. their mountain neighbors held strtctly to traditional means of expressing grtef which helped transmit these traditions to future generations.' John Jay Dickey and Katherine Pettit kept journals which provide the most detailed southeastern Kentucky funeral accounts.
