Voices of Feminism Oral History Project Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College Northampton, MA CATHERINE ROMA Interviewed by JOYCE FOLLET June 19 and 20, 2005 Northampton, Massachusetts This interview was made possible with generous support from the Ford Foundation. © Sophia Smith Collection 2006 Sophia Smith Collection Voices of Feminism Oral History Project Narrator Catherine Roma was born in Philadelphia January 29, 1948, the youngest of three children of Italian-born parents. Her mother completed high school and, once married, was a community volunteer. Her father graduated from Princeton University and Temple Law School, but when his own father died young, he left legal practice to run the family’s barbershops in Philadelphia and other East Coast railroad terminals. Practicing Catholics, Catherine’s parents sent her to Germantown Friends School K-12; she remains a Convinced Friend. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Roma earned a BA in music and an MM in Choral Conducting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she became involved in socialist-feminist politics and began organizing a feminist choral group in 1974. Returning to Philadelphia the following year to teach music at Abington Friends School, she organized and conducted Anna Crusis, the first feminist women’s choir in the US. In 1983 she undertook the doctorate in musical arts at the University of Cincinnati, where she founded MUSE, the community chorus she continues to lead. Under Roma’s leadership, MUSE is a vital group in what has become a national and international grassroots movement of women’s choruses. MUSE is recognized as a model anti-racist community organization and a progressive force in Cincinnati politics. -

Engle B.B.A., Eastern Kentucky University B.A., Eastern Kentucky University M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Bradley Nash, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis documents the history of the Lend-A-Hand Center, Inc., a nonprofit community service provider in Knox County, Kentucky, that has served the Stinking Creek watershed since 1958. The brainchild and lifework of two women from the North, Irma Gall and Peggy Kemner, the Lend-A-Hand Center has become an influential organization in the region and has had a significant impact on the Stinking Creek community. Although the Center has been intertwined with many important movements, events, and organizations in Appalachia, it has not previously been the subject of any serious academic study. -

The Old Regular Baptist faith of the mountains had influenced creative thinkers in the area for generations, and the coming of settlement schools brought secular evaluation from outside the culture. As the people living in the mountains began to understand the uniqueness of their musical heritage, radio technology was becoming available on a much larger scale than ever before. Singers and songwriters from the mountains found eager audiences on a national level. One of these musicians was Bill Lowe, of Pike County, Kentucky. His early experiences with music clashed with his family’s belief system and he found himself caught up in the contradictions of southern spirituality. -

Leloudis Nancy MacLean Zaragosa Vargas ©2014 Jessica Wilkerson ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Jessica Wilkerson: Where Movements Meet: From the War on Poverty to Grassroots Feminism in the Appalachian South (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) This dissertation traces the alliances forged and the grassroots movements led by women in the Appalachian South in the 1960s and 1970s, with a focus on eastern Kentucky. With a wide variety of sources, including oral history interviews, archival film footage, memorabilia, local and underground publications, and manuscript collections, it shows how women shaped the federal War on Poverty in Appalachia and then used the skills they learned in antipoverty programs to foster social justice activism that continued in the 1970s and beyond. Women in Appalachia, who have seldom been seen as actors in the movements of the 1960s, were key leaders and foot soldiers in what contemporaries called the Appalachian Movement, which intersected with civil rights organizations and had its roots in the War on Poverty. Rural, poor and working-class women helped to shape debates about welfare rights, women’s rights, and labor justice in the 1960s and 1970s, connecting white and black women, insiders and outsiders, to form a robust, interracial, intergenerational, and region-wide movement. -

"A Settlement Institution of the Southern Appalachians is a private, non-profit, rural organization in the Southern Appalachians designed to promote and provide programs, services, and development with the immediate community or nearby surrounding areas in which it is located." In the document, individual reports (by state) of each institution provide information such as character and philosophy of the institution, governing structures, staff resources, facilities, and history. Additionally, a profile of each institution describes types of programs, dates of origin, affiliations, and project area trends. Individual reports of 6 agencies and a list of institutional reference materials are included. It is concluded that settlement institutions contribute to the future of Appalachia by utilizing local ties and the freedom of being private. By bringing innovation and change in their areas of influence, these institutions help to provide for the needs of Appalachia's culture. Settlement School, 1902-1910) located in the eastern Kentucky Appalachian Mountain region. Three themes emerged from the data: the social dimension in handiwork, social production of the handiwork, and innovative educational practices. The Hindman Settlement School, still in operation today, was respected for its academics, handiwork, and response to the region's educational needs. It was influenced by innovative education reforms of Jane Addams and John Dewey. (Contains 27 references.)
