The usual Irish Traditional Music Sessions continue, as does the Sunnyside Singers Club and the Folk Open Sing. In addition, we have the Upper West Side Song Swap and the Shanty Sing. June also begins a number of Folk Festivals throughout the country. Check out the Festival Listings to help you plan your summer. We have some sad news. Bernie Stolls passed away this month. We will miss him. Among his many accomplishments, Bernie put together the pickup dance band for the weekend dances, and we were able to dance to live music He was always cheerful and encouraging to instrumentalists and everyone else in general. See the articles about him. For the May issue we tried something new. The Newsletter was mailed out by a service; there were problems and the newsletter went out a bit late. We hope everything is now resolved. We are trying again with this (June) issue. If it doesn’t work out, we will be back to mailing out our newsletters the old way. Be sure to call 7186726399 to check out if the July 3rd mailing will be happening.

In Memoriam: Bernie Stolls: 19362018 It is with great sadness that I write that we’ve lost another dear friend: Bernie Stolls, long time FMSNY member. Bernie passed away on May 6 of endstage heart disease after a long illness. He died peacefully while in hospice care, attended by his devoted children Amy and Eric, and his brother Jerry. His wife of 50 years, Myrna, predeceased him in 2012. He had been retired for many years after a career as a high school math teacher and math department programming chairman in Queens. Bernie was involved with music since his childhood, from his days as a young music counselor (“Bernie Banjo”) at Camp Arcady in New York …….to co authoring a banjo instruction book ……to leading and arranging music for the LITMA (Long Island Traditional Music Association) orchestra for many years…….to organizing and leading the contradance pickup band at the FMSNY weekends ……..to composing and recording many tunes, both instrumental and vocal. He was proficient on the hammered dulcimer, 5 string banjo, and dobro banjo. He was a member of the FMSNY for over 50 years and attended Pinewoods Camp regularly for over 40 years. He often led singing sessions at FMSNY weekends and instrumental workshops at various venues. In addition to his children and brother, Bernie leaves behind 4 devoted grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A website dedicated to his memory may be accessed at: https://bernie stolls.muchloved.com/ where you may view photos and stories, listen to his music, and contribute memories. It also includes a list of causes he supported, in case you would like to make a donation in his memory. Toni Field

4 In Memory of Bernie Stolls June 2, 1936 May 6, 2018 Bernie was such a friendly, welcoming, encouraging and consistent friend from my very first Folk Music Week at Pinewoods, 1985. He was always game to sit outside when people wanted to play music and sing together. In those days we could jam anywhere, so circles often sprung up around Bernie or Irene near the Square, in C#Minor, or wherever chairs could fit. From 1985 to 1994, I attended every folk music week as well as the fall, winter and spring weekends of the NY Pinewoods Folk Music Club; Bernie was always a part of those reunions and regularly attended the camp and weekends until last year, always directing the dance bands. One vivid memory was at a Camp Freedman fall weekend when we stayed up all night, singing in a small group. I remember mystical harmonies in “Bright Morning Star.” We drove to the nearby diner, found a booth and had a giddy and delicious pancake breakfast. I don’t think Bernie ever missed an occasion to gather with friends. I can still hear Bernie with his banjo, his hammered dulcimer and his distinctive voice, singing the hours away. Thank you, my friend. Chris Some things you may not have known about Berniehe recorded at least 15 CDs in solo and small group performances; he created his own banjo tablature for hundreds of his arrangements and created booklets with instructions with matching CDs for beginners of banjo and hammered dulcimer; he gave away his CDs and booklets every chance he had to encourage others to play; he played the hammered dulcimer for English country dances and contra dances throughout Long Island and was director of the Long Island Traditional Music orchestra for 9 years. Bernie left his 2 children and 4 grandchildren a strong legacy of the value of singing together and playing instruments. His daughter, Amy Stolls of Washington, D.C., has established a website where you can read more about Bernie, hear his music and see photos, and leave a story about your experience with Bernie if you wishhttps://bernie stolls.muchloved.com You played with such extraordinary and tender passion. We’ll miss you deeply, Bernie. Jan “…and the ladies remember at Whitsun.” “Remember me at the close of a long long day…” “No more, Robin, no more. Your outlaw days are over…” Chris FarrowNoble and Jan Maier, May 17, 2018 Donate Without It Costing You! You can donate to the club at no cost to you! Mystic Sea Music Festival, June 710, 2018: https://www.mysticseaport.org/event/seamusicfestival/ Taking place at the seaport museum in Mystic, Connecticut, this festival features a bunch of traditional performers and offers attendees a chance to experience life aboard ship. You can actually help turn a capstan, raise a sail, and so forth. Great for families. Old Songs Festival, June 2224: https://festival.oldsongs.org/ At the Altamont Fairgrounds in upstate New York, again with a horde of traditional performers. Lovely setting with food and crafts along with singing, playing, dancing, and having fun. Family friendly. FMSNY also supports the Youth Traditional Song Weekend (http:// www.youthtradsong.org/), the Brooklyn Folk Festival, http://brooklynfolkfest.com (April), and the Park Slope Bluegrass/Old Time Jamboree (September)
