LET’S BUILD ON LAST WEEK

“Writing this from Florida, it was fantastic to see last weekend that we came from behind to beat Cor- wen 3-1 thanks to goals from Danny and Dean, it’s always nice to be at the top of the pile and how long we’ll stay there nobody knows, but it was pretty much the perfect start to the JD Cymru North.

The first digital programme was released last week and I’d like to take this time to thank everyone who read it, it’s going to be a lot more accessible this season for everyone to read and completely free so hopefully it can always build a bit more excitement for the weekend’s game.

This weekend, it’s Gresford, who have had a bit of a mixed season so far having already played three games. Firstly, they saw off tough opposition in the Nathaniel MG Cup first round in Colwyn Bay, be- fore being comfortably beaten by side Bala Town, and that followed with a disappoint- ing first game of the Cymru North season, losing 2-0 to Llangefni, but if they come to Maesdu Park at their best, we will have to be too in order to get anything out of the game.

Keep supporting the club and hopefully we can start a bit of a run and get some momentum during the season, but as always, be sure to enjoy the afternoon.

Proud Supporters of Llandudno FC LLANDUDNO FC A BRIEF HISTORY OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Football in Llandudno dates back to 1878 when a club, probably known as Gloddaeth Rovers was in existence for around a decade. The club was formed for the purpose of providing activity for cricketers during their close season. SA full international Wales v Ireland was played on the “council field” in 1988.

Llandudno were founder members of the Welsh National League (North) in 1921 and were champions in 1923 and League Cup winners in 1930. The club won the N.W.C.F.A in 1926 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1929. Controversy struck the club in 1931 when the F.A.W instructed them to play East Wales, which Llandudno refused and were suspended.

Llandudno were also founder members of the Welsh League (North) in 1935 and remained in the league until war broke out in 1939 and then re-joined in 1945 up until 1974. Llandudno were league champions in 1936 and repeated the feat the following season, in addition the club regained the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1948 and 1962, the Alves Cup in 1951 and the Cookson Cup in 1965.

The club moved to its current home at Maesdu Park in 1991 after the “council field” was used for the construction of the ASDA store in the late 1970’s, now the new Parc MBi Maesdu. The current ground was officially opened in 1991 and floodlights were added in 1994. The following season saw the erection of a clubhouse and two small stands which provides covered seating for 130 spectators.

The club has then went under major transitions, with the addition of a new press box, built by local lad Cyril “Ciz” Williams who tragically died while construction was ongoing, and it is surely a testament that such a great number of friends were determined to finish his work and the building stands as a fitting memorial to this wonderful man. In the 2004/05 season the current dressing rooms were built, and the grandstands with disabled access. In the 2014/15 season major developments continued with the addition of a brand new entrance foyer, fitted with an educational suite, and a state of the art 3G pitch alongside the introduction of a thriving community arm, and for the first time in the clubs history Llandudno Football Club earned promotion into the Welsh .

The club then reached an agreement with sportswear giants Adidas to be their official kitwear supplier until at least 2017, along with major kit sponsors from W.R. Davies Renault and the UPVC Outlet. The good news didn’t stop there as more redevelopments took place around the ground with the introduc- tion of a brand new TV gantry and 75 seater stand.

At the end of the 2015/16 season, and in Llandudno’s debut year in the top tier of Welsh football, we gained automatic promotion to the Europa League after a third placed finish. Llandudno had earned themselves a tie against two time European Cup Winners IFK Goteborg in the first qualifying round, on- ly to be outmuscled 7-1 on aggregate, with Danny Hughes the name in history scoring for his hometown club. An experience the club and the town were extremely proud of, and one that will never be forgotten as we look to replicate it year upon year.

All this wouldn’t be possible without the support and the dedication from our tirelessly working volun- teers, and so here you find us as one club, one community. LLFC PLAYER SPONSORSHIPS 2019/20

Good afternoon and once again welcome to Maesdu Park for this our second league game of the JD Cymru North Season, against Gresford Athletic. This game was originally sched- uled to be away from home but with Gresford having to play their opening games of the season away from home due to sharing their pitch with the cricket club, the fixture was re- versed, giving us the first three league games at home. This gives us an opportunity to turn our home ground into a fortress early on and that’s something that the players, coaching staff and myself are keen to do.

For this we need the help of our loyal fans to really make it feel like home. Our job then is to ensure we are a side that is both difficult to beat and goes out onto the pitch to win the game, no matter who the opponent. I was pleased with the result last week against newly promoted Corwen and also pleased with some aspects of the performance, I felt that we controlled the game in parts and where clinical when we needed to be, whilst also being hard to beat. We must now build on and refine this in order to ensure we can start the sea- son with a positive run of form. I would like to welcome Gresford for this afternoons game.

Gresford are a side that I know a lot about and also a side that are always very well equipped for this league. They are always well drilled and cause problems going forward. Steve (DoF) and Richie (manager) have done a very good job in recruiting and keeping a settled and strong side that always competes well. Just like every game this season, we will need to ensure we prepare properly and approach this game in the right manner. This week the lads have worked very hard in training and with it still being such a new group, we are pleased with how we are bedding in together and how everyone is starting to un- derstand each other. I would like to once again say a huge thank you to the loyal group of volunteers that work so hard behind the scenes to ensure that the players and staff can fo- cus on the football. I wish you all a very pleasant afternoon of football. “

Matthew Jones, 1st Team Manager LLANDUDNO FC MATCH REPORT OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME LLANDUDNO vs CORWEN Matchday 1 JD Cymru North Saturday, 17th of August Maesdu Park, Llandudno

RESULT: Llandudno 3-1 Corwen

A brace from Danny Hughes and one from Dean Seager cancelled out Corwen’s early penalty and give Llan- dudno the best possible start to life in the newly formed league.

Despite the controlling the early minutes of the game, it was the away side who went ahead first after the refer- ee gave them a penalty after a foul by Seager.

Joe Williams confidently stepped up to take the kick from 12 yards and it went past Shaun Pearson to make it 0 -1.

Llandudno needed to reply quickly and that’s what they did when Danny Hughes went up the other end and scored from close range to calm the nerves of the home supporters.

Robbie Parry, who was a surprise inclusion in the team following his injury, went close on the 16th minute of the game after a good ball from Seager, but it was well saved by the Corwen number one.

Llandudno were controlling the possession in the first half, and the chance came to give them the lead when Parry played a lovely cross into the captain Hughes, and he headed home to get his and Llandudno’s second of the day.

Corwen could have replied before the half-time whistle when they had a good opportunity but Shaun Pearson denied their man.

The second half started rather slowly with neither side having many chances, manager Matty Jones decided to bring on Aaron Pomeyie for Aron Jones and he made an instant impact, finding Parry with an excellent cross but he couldn’t find the target.

Llandudno won a free-kick on the 75th minute and the ball was delivered straight to the path of Seager who tucked it home to give the home side some breathing space and make it 3-1.

Llandudno were pushing for a fourth goal late on but it never came, despite that, we couldn’t have asked for a much better start to life in the JD Cymru North with a comfortable 3-1 victory.

The victory means we sit at the top of the league going into the second matchday of the season at home against Gresford next Saturday afternoon, and then yet another home game against Rhyl follows the Tuesday after.

LAST SEASON: 9th in the Huws Gray Lost to Flint in the 2nd round of the JD Did not enter the Nathaniel MG Cup. GRESFORD ATHLETIC

The history of the present day Gresford Athletic football club stretches back to 1946 although it is known that the club exist- ed in the 1920s. Gresford Athletic won the 'West' Division of the league in the 1946/47 season. The next time the club won a league trophy was in 1962/63 when they won Division 2 of the Wrexham league.

In 1969 Division Three was split into two sections, A and B with Gresford reserves winning the Section A title. The club remained in the Welsh National (Wrexham Area) League until the introduction of the Cymru Alliance League in season 1990-91 when they became one of the founder members of the League. They remained in the Cymru Alliance League for four seasons before being relegated back to the Welsh National League, during this four-year period they reached the League Cup final losing to a very strong Rhyl side at Newi Cefn Druids.

They became Champions of the Welsh National Premier League in season 1995-96 but due to financial difficulties could not meet the ground criteria for promotion back to the Cymru Alliance. During that season, Gresford Athletic Colts also won th3 Division 2 title.

The following season a new committee formed with the intention of taking the club back into the Cymru Alliance. This was achieved in season 2000-01 when they were once again Champions of the Welsh National Premier League and with the finances in place the committee managed to upgrade Clappers Lane to Cymru Alliance standards, in the same sea- son they were also beaten finalist’s in the Welsh Trophy.

Upon the re-structure of football in Wales they re-entered the Welsh National Premier League in season 2010/11 following 9 seasons in the Cymru Alliance League. This proved to be a difficult season for the Club with them finishing in the bottom four however the following 3 seasons saw them steadily move up the League table. The summer of 2014 saw a new man- agement team and committee introduced which brought in a number of new players in with the emphasis both on and off the pitch being on achieving promotion to the Huws Gray Alliance, A 24 match unbeaten run saw them maintain a control on the league whilst also seeing a successful run in the Welsh Cup, Trophy and League Cup competitions and it was January before they finally lost a game however the league title was not clinched until the final game of the season by which time the work had been completed behind the scenes with promotion having already been confirmed. The 2015/16 season saw Gresford claim their highest ever finish in Tier 2 when they finished the season in 6th place.

Keep Supporting The Boys It's good to be back at home again after a decent result against Cor- wen last week. We need to be trying to win as many games as possi- ble at home this year…

It was a blow to go one down so early but we showed good charac- ter to come back and win. It was nice to get on the scoresheet again as well.

Gresford will be a difficult game and they'll have a point to prove af- ter losing to Llangefni last week so we need to start with a good tempo and hopefully get another good three points.

Hopefully there's a few more people through the gates this week af- ter a positive result!

Enjoy the game

GRESFORD ATHLETIC UP NEXT FOR LLANDUDNO

Llandudno will be welcoming Gresford Athletic to Maesdu Park this weekend where they will look to make it two out of two in the JD Cymru North.

A 3-1 victory against Corwen, despite having to come from behind, gave today’s home side the best possible start to life in the new division.

Gresford have had a mixed start to their season after it started off positively against newcomers Colwyn Bay in the Nathaniel MG Cup, but a heavy loss to Bala Town in the next round was made worse when they were also beaten by newly promoted Llangefni in the first weekend of the league season.

Robbie Parry was a surprise inclusion in the team last weekend after it was feared he’d still be out with an injury, but was available against Corwen and made a very positive impact.

Bryan Roberts, who impressed in pre-season, is expected to return but there are still doubts on Jacob Farleigh, Alfons Fosu-Mensah and Gerwyn Jones.

Captain Danny Hughes grabbed two of the goals last weekend, whilst Dean Seager made up for giving away the penalty for Corwen’s opener by scoring the third goal and sealing the victory. Both are ex- pected to feature again in this game.

A positive result against Gresford this weekend would give us some great momentum going into the third consecutive home game of the season against Rhyl three days later, before finally going away to local rivals Colwyn Bay the following weekend.

LLANDUDNO FC MANAGER QUOTES OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME QUOTES FROM THE MANAGER AHEAD OF THE GAME

On the Corwen victory

“The thing that pleased me the most about the win was that for parts of the game we wee able to get hold of the ball and control the game, we also created a number of chances whilst looking solid defen- sively, with everyone working together across the pitch. It feels like things are building with each game which is key for our development.”

On Danny Hughes’ influence

“Danny is a huge player for us, not only in terms of his playing ability but also as a leader. After we went 1-0 down, Danny helped to ensure that no one’s head went down and that we worked our way back into the game. He was involved in all three goals which ensued he made a large contribution to the game itself as well.

On Gresford

“Gresford are an experienced Cymru North side who have been together a long time, and have also recruited well over the Summer, They are always organised and always ask questions of you when they attack. Having lost last weekend, their management team will be demanding a response from them so we must be aware of that and look to impose our game plan on the match early.”

On injuries and player availability

“Things are looking up on that regard. Scott McHarrie’s suspension has now been served, so he is available, Robbie came through 75 minutes last weekend but we are still monitoring his hamstring inju- ry. Alfons has trained with the group this week. Jacob Farleigh remains a major doubt with his ankle inury and Gerwyn is a long term concern. So we’ve got some bodies coming back in which provides us with a boost as well as more competition for places.” LLANDUDNO FC CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

After a great start to our league campaign, I am looking forward to our second game, when we will welcome Gresford to Maesdu Park. (Game 2 of a three home game run.)

Our opener, against Corwen was a lively encounter, with lots to cheer about, especially the brace of goals, from our captain and talisman, Danny Hughes. (Sponsors Man of the Match)

It was tremendous to secure a convincing home win, on our first outing. We played some excellent football, and despite going a goal down early on, I was confident we would take all three points…

Robbie Parry had a terrific game, supplying a couple of superb assists, and the whole team performed well.

It was good to see some of our U19s making the bench, and getting some game time...

Fingers crossed for today's game… as Matty says, none of these games are going to be easy, but I hope as our team grows stronger together, we can look forward to some good, enter- taining football from them.

LLANDUDNO FC CLUB NEWS OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME PLAYER IN FOCUS SAM DOWNEY

Position: Midfield | Age: 25 | Previous Clubs: Denbigh, Rhyl, Corby Town, Leiknir Reykjavik and Lincoln City | At the club since: July 2019

Sam was one of the first players brought in by new manager Matty Jones, having worked with him whilst at Rhyl and Den- bigh and Sam says that the decision was simple when he was asked to join Matty at Llandudno. “I’ve worked with Matty for the last couple of seasons at Rhyl and Denbigh, when he got the job it was an easy decision to sign for Llandudno and work with him once again.” “I’ve settled in really well, like every pre-season it’s important to get to know the lads and settle into new surroundings and we’ve been together for seven weeks now and done a few team bonding sessions that’s brought us all together and given us a great bond before the season started!” Said Sam

Sam has been an ever-present figure in the midfield during pre-season and in the competitive games against Guilsfield and Corwen, and he thinks that him and Danny are developing a good understanding in the centre of the park. “It’s really important to build partnerships and get to know how your team mates play. I think me and Danny have got that understanding from playing together so much during pre-season, and I’m definitely 100% ready after doing all of Danny’s running for him during the pre-season games!” Joked Sam.

Sam played the full 90 minutes against Corwen last Saturday and has said that getting that first win was vital for the moral of the team. “Getting the first win was always going to be important for our moral, I think we were unlucky in the cup game (against Guilsfield) so it was nice to put that right in the first league game. I think we played well in large parts of the game and we controlled posession , it was nice to see us come back strong after going behind so early on too.” “Now we just need to push on from there and turn good periods of play into the full game.” Said Sam.

Sam isn’t from Wales so has taken a different path to Llandudno compared to most others, and he said that the challenge of playing in a different league was something that excited him, “The idea of playing in a new league and new challenges was something I wanted to experience. The English leagues are very physical and fast-paced, this league differs in the way that more teams try to play out and control the game with pos- session. There’s definitely a lot of good players in this league that should be playing higher, it’s a very competitive environ- ment from players to be in and I really enjoy that aspect to it.

Sam Downey has said that the target this season is to finish as high as possible and hopes that this new team will be able to find their feet quickly in the league. “It’s a really tough league this year, the most competitive I’ve seen in the last three years. With us being a new team, I think this year will be a good year for us to find our feet and push as high as we can in the league, but with the quality we’ve got in the side you never know what could happen” said Sam.

We have been asked to do the programme notes for this weekend's game against Gresford Athletic, and we would like to open up by saying how impressed we were overall with the win last weekend.

It was nice to get off to a good start and in the end it was a comfortable win. After giving away an early goal through a very harshly given penalty it would have been easy for heads to have gone down and fallen into the pattern that perhaps we would have last season.

This group of players however pulled their socks up and worked themselves back into the game through the 2 goals from Jaggers who was excellent throughout.

We probably should have mad fit more comfortable than it was earlier than we did but we saw it out and it was nice to see Dean Seager open his account for the season. The new players seem to be bedding in well and there's a lot of excitement from the fans to see more of Aaron Pomeyie after he came on.

Onto Gresford who visit us after a -2 0 loss against Llangefni last weekend. We will go into this full of confidence although Gresford will want to put a defeat behind them and get those first points on the board. Here's hoping we have a good crowd to cheer the lads on and after having 210 there last weekend we will hopefully improve on that. #KeepTheFaith
