IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Tribal Transportation Program

The TIP is a four year strategic plan that defines priorities and expenditures of Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Transportation funds. The primary focus of the TIP is the prioritization of construction projects on an annual basis within a four year strategic plan. Transportation facilities include roads, bridges, harbors, sidewalks, bus stops, ferries and trails on the federal-aid inventory system. In addition to the TIP, the Transportation has five primary focus areas, Construction Management, Planning, Asset Management, Grants and Regional Tribal Transit. Project Description Proposed extension of Bahweting Phase I. Road located north side of Bahweting School. Roadway begins at 8th Avenue on the west side of school, head easterly to Shunk Road, turn and come out at Marquette and East 10th Street. Site is surveyed and project is designed. Project scope would include construction of new roadway, utilities, curb gutter and sidewalks throughout the development with new access site for bus or parent drop off at the School with parking. Project Justification (Need & Impact) Address safety of the users, improve overall quality of site and allow for possible future building of a Tribal education campus to include Head Start, Early Head Start, Day Care, etc. Project Status Project ready for construction

Project Description Design and construction of multi-purpose path over railroad crossing in Munising on Tannery Road. This connector trail will promote access for snowmobiles to the Casino along with tribal residence in tribal housing to access city of Munising. Project Justification (Need & Impact) Anticipate that project will be highly beneficial to snowmobilers to access the Casino in Manistique and would have positive impact on gaming revenue. Project Status Transportation Program has and will continue to work with local agencies to move this project forward.

Project Description This trail route is located behind the Chi Mukwa Recreation Facility on Ice Circle Drive. Its location is 84˚18’49.109’W, 46˚28’27.276N in Chippewa County. Project Justification (Need & Impact) This trail allows the public and visitors of the recreation facility to enjoy a 1.7 mile walk into the forest of Sault Ste. Marie. It provides off-road exercise for the nearby housing residents and children. The Chi Mukwa fitness instructors use the trail to get people out and moving. In addition, the Chi Mukwa After School Program takes children on hikes through the woods utilizing the existing trail. Along the trail, the public enjoys experiencing nature and identifying traditional medicines. The intention of the Tribe in updating this route for the inventory is to make this route eligible for funds for potential future improvements and maintenance.
