Anyone who has a personal problem with substance abuse is eligible. The purpose of this agency is to provide pre- vention and outreach to the Indian community regarding substance abuse. Pregnant mothers in our community are encouraged to participate in our Prenatal Series. This special series of classes includes an Early Prenatal, Lamaze Prepared Childbirth, Breastfeeding, and Infant CPR, Parenting and Safety class. This series of classes directly addresses the needs of pregnant mothers, helping them prepare for the coming months of both physical and emotional growth and change. Early Prenatal class highlights: development of your baby, common concerns, conditions to be aware of, prenatal care, and more. Lamaze highlights: controlled breathing, relaxation techniques, medication, anesthesia choices, and Caesarean birth information. Breastfeeding class: techniques for a successful start to breastfeeding in the hospital and the first few weeks. Infant CPR, Parent- ing and Safety class: learn the basics of lifesaving techniques for your infant. Receive necessary training to help you in case of an emergency. Lutheran Child & Family Service of Michigan Families First Program is a Family Preservation/In-Home Service whose goal is to preserve families by keeping children safe. A strength-based and family-centered approach is used with the families. Families First services are delivered in the families’ homes or other mutually agreed upon com- munity locations. A mixture of counseling, skills training and concrete services are offered to meet the unique needs of each family. Students are eligible to enter the Upward Bound program after they have com- pleted the 8th grade but not entered 12th grade; are between the ages of 13 and 18; if neither residential parent has completed a four year degree; have potential for post-secondary education. Two-thirds of the students must also meet the low-income guidelines. This is a year round program including a six week summer residential component and a nine month academic year follow up conducted at area high schools and on the LSSU campus.
