Charting Gabriola —the survey of HMS Egeria, 1904 by Nick Doe Many Gabriolans, and certainly many HMS Egeria was a 940-ton, 4-gun sloop (two residents of Mudge Island, are familiar with 20-pounders and two machine guns) with the 20th-century “petroglyph” down at three square-rigged masts, a funnel, and one Green Wharf. The petroglyph is carved on coal-fired steam-driven propeller. It was the west face of a large sandstone boulder, 160-feet long, had an iron frame sheathed in about 20 metres (75 ft.) from the wharf. Stock#: 46127 Map Maker: British Admiralty Date: 1865 Place: London Color: Uncolored Condition: VG+ Size: 16 x 21.5 inches Price: $ 1,600.00 Description: Surveyed For The New Headquarters of the British Navy's Pacific Fleet Rare British Admiralty Chart of Constance Cove, Esquimalt Harbour, home to the British Royal Navy's Pacific Fleet beginning in 1865 and thereafter the Canadian Royal Navy. This is the second revised state of the map, which was first surveyed in 1858 and the first edition of the map printed in 1864, with revisions in February and March of 1865, as the British Royal Navy began to complete its relocation from Valparaiso, Chile, to Constance Cove. The Boundary of the Admiralty Lands are shown, as are the recently constructed Naval Hospital, Boat House, Naval Stores and other recently constructed naval facilities. Thetis Island also appears, named for one of the first British naval ships to arrive to the region in 1852. Forsters Pier is also shown, along with the Road to Victoria. The first Europeans to reach Esquimalt were the Spanish expedition of Manuel Quimper in the Princesa Real in 1790, with Gonzalo López de Haro and Juan Carrasco. Quimper entered and carefully mapped Esquimalt Harbor. Quimper claimed the region for Spain and placed a wooden cross on a hill. -

PEOPLE Hudson’s Bay Company Dr. Benson. Alfred Robson Benson (c.1815-c.1900) served as a physician at several Company posts, including Nanaimo, Victoria, and Vancouver. He first arrived at Fort Victoria in 1849, and worked there and at Fort Vancouver until 1855, when he sailed to England. He returned to the Nanaimo in 1857, and worked there for the Company until his discharge in 1862; he continued on under the new coal company. He eventually returned to England where he died (Watson 2010:211-2) Judge Cameron. David Cameron (1804-1872) was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Vancouver Island. He was married to James Douglas’ sister Cecilia Eliza Douglas Cowan, and also an employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Carly. Unknown. Clough. Unknown. Dallas. Alexander Grant Dallas (1816-1882) was a Governor of the Company west of the Rockies as well as James Douglas’ son-in-law. He arrived in Victoria in 1857, taking over Douglas’ duties when the latter became Governor of the Colony. In 1864 he left the West Coast to become Governor of Rupert’s land in Fort Garry. He eventually returned to England where he died in 1882 (Watson 2010:325) Douglas. Sir James Douglas (1803-1877) joined the fur trade in 1819, in 1849 came to Fort Victoria, and two years later became Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island. He then served as Governor of the newly-formed Colony of British Columbia (including Vancouver Island) from 1858-1863. Upon his retirement he was knighted, and eventually died in Victoria in 1877 (Watson 2010:358) Finlayson. -

He moved to Belfast in 1976 to take up a lectureship in geography at Queen’s University where he is now Professor of Island Geography and Director of the Centre of Canadian Studies. Two research topics have defined his career: studies of small islands, and also the city of Belfast. His books include North America: a Geographical Mosaic (edited with Frederick W. Ships and Boats
SHIPS AND BOATS Hudson’s Bay Company Beaver. The Hudson’s Bay Company steamship Beaver was not only the first steamer in Puget Sound, but also the most venerable. Built in England in 1835, she was 101 feet long, 20 feet in the beam, and had an 11 foot deep hold. After sailing around the Horn and arriving at the Fort Vancouver via the Sandwich Islands, the Beaver, which was originally meant for travel on the Columbia River, was assigned to routes from Fort Nisqually in Puget Sound and further north to other Company trading posts. The Beaver had a crew of thirty, ten of whom were wood choppers, because she burned some 40 cords a day, which was about all she could carry. In 1860, she took up the Victoria-New Westminster run as a passenger boat. She was sold as a tugboat by the Company in 1874, and after several more reincarnations and owners, she was abandoned after hitting the rocks near Vancouver Harbor in 1888. Julia. The Beaver was joined in 1853 by the Hudson’s Bay Company ship Julia, a bark-rigged propeller steamer, 122 feet in length and 20 feet in beam. Otter. Built in England in 1852 for the Hudson’s Bay Company, the Otter was a wooden, single-screw steamer, schooner rigged. The dimensions of this 291-ton gross ship were 125 feet long by 22 feet in beam and drew 12 feet. Prince Albert. Built in England in 1841 for the Hudson’s Bay Company, this 303-ton ship was 103’ long, 25’6” wide, and 17’6” deep. -
Mudge Island
Mudge Island By Ivan Bulic and Joyce White A little over a tenth of a mile across False Narrows from Gabriola, Mudge Island seems almost a part of its larger neighbour. With no ferries, stores or schools, the Mudgekins - and the little Mudgekins - have to row their boats to Gabriola for groceries, to ride the ferry to Nanaimo, or attend school. But this small gulf island (only 1.2 sq miles in size and with fewer than 100 full-time residents) is not simply a smaller version of Gabriola. Originally labeled Portland Island on early charts, Mudge is part of an island group that includes Pylades, Ruxton, and De Courcy islands. It was officially named after Royal Navy Lt. William Tertius Fitzwilliam Mudge, by Capt George Richards during his 1859 survey of Vancouver Island in HMS Plumper. Today it is hard to imagine the crucial role played by the navy in early colonial British Columbia. Royal Navy ships charted the coast, carried supplies and mails to scattered coastal settlements and Hudson’s Bay forts such as Nanaimo, and enforced British law. Naval officers acted as police officers and judges, resolved land disputes, negotiated with local First Nations, and conducted scientific observations of the animals, plants, geology and climate in the areas they explored. William Mudge was a quintessential Victorian naval officer. Born in 1831, he entered the navy as a 13-year-old cadet, and came from an old naval family that included Zachary Mudge, first lieutenant in Capt George Vancouver’s expedition, after whom Cape Mudge off Campbell River is named. -

A Lekwungen Herring Fishing site in Esquimalt Harbour. A Unique photograph in the Collection of the Royal B.C. Museum By Grant Keddie, Curator of Archaeology 19th century photographic images in the Victoria region that show Lekwungen (Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations) undertaking traditional food gathering practices are rare. The only example of fishing is a photograph, taken in 1868, by Frederick Dally in Esquimalt harbour at the south entrance to Lang Cove (RBCM PN905). Lang Cove is located south of Skinner’s Cove, both of which are within the larger Constance Cove. This is the location of an ancient shellmidden as demonstrated by the scattered white clam shells seen in the image and later observed by the author at this location. Figure 1. This image (fig. 1 and close-up fig.2) of a man and woman at a herring fishing site is listed in Frederick Dally’s Miscellaneous Papers, (File 17), as #5 “Indian at Esquimalt, canoes, fish etc.”. A copy of the photograph in the RBCM Archives Dally Album #5 has information along the bottom of the image noting what is in the photograph “herrings drying - rush mat- fish spears – Indian woman cooking – Chinook canoes – Esquimalt Harbour V. Island”. A copy of this photograph was also in the original photo album of Lieutenant J.C. Eastcott, the surgeon on the ship H.M.S. Reindeer that was on duty at the Esquimalt Royal Naval Dockyard station from 1868-75 (now the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt). -

We were eager to review these documents on be- half of our First Nation clients, hoping to find material that would add to existing ethno-historical information and provide support for land and resource claims. We were particularly interested in Richards’ journal of the Vancouver Island surveys conducted between 1860 and 1862. Our first stop was the Hydrographic Office (the UKHO) in Taunton, where archivist Guy Hannaford gave us ready access to all of the original charts and drawings of the Vancouver Island surveys. Twenty-first century satellite photography cannot render the misty seas and immense forested shores suggested in these delicately etched and colour-washed nautical draw- ings. The published version of these charts can be viewed at the British Columbia Archives in Victoria, but certain details of the original drawings have been omitted and our interest was in these omissions, particularly the barely visible rectangular boxes on the shore which represent the houses and villages of many First Nations on Vancouver Island.
