National General Status Working Group: 302 pp. Available in French under title: Espèces sauvages 2010: La situation générale des espèces au Canada. ii Abstract Wild Species 2010 is the third report of the series after 2000 and 2005. The aim of the Wild Species series is to provide an overview on which species occur in Canada, in which provinces, territories or ocean regions they occur, and what is their status. Each species assessed in this report received a rank among the following categories: Extinct (0.2), Extirpated (0.1), At Risk (1), May Be At Risk (2), Sensitive (3), Secure (4), Undetermined (5), Not Assessed (6), Exotic (7) or Accidental (8). In the 2010 report, 11 950 species were assessed. Many taxonomic groups that were first assessed in the previous Wild Species reports were reassessed, such as vascular plants, freshwater mussels, odonates, butterflies, crayfishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Other taxonomic groups are assessed for the first time in the Wild Species 2010 report, namely lichens, mosses, spiders, predaceous diving beetles, ground beetles (including the reassessment of tiger beetles), lady beetles, bumblebees, black flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, and some selected macromoths. The overall results of this report show that the majority of Canada’s wild species are ranked Secure. -
Floristic Study of Bryophytes in a Subtropical Forest of Nabeup-Ri at Aewol Gotjawal, Jejudo Island

A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. Box 9514, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands Abstract Neckera praetermissa Enroth & Touw spec. nov. (Neckeraceae) is described from northern Vietnam. It is morphologically closest to the SE Asian N. undulatifolia (Tix.) Enroth, with which it shares the similar, ovate-ligulate and symmetric leaves with coarsely dentate apices, and strongly incrassate and porose leaf cell walls. However, N. undulatifolia has the stems up to 10 cm long and a distinct costa reaching to 5/6 of leaf length, while the stems of N. praetermissa are to c. 3 cm long and the leaves are ecostate or with a weak costa reaching to 1/6 of leaf length at most. Key words: Taxonomy, Pleurocarpous mosses, New species, Tropics Introduction Based on genomic data, the systematics of the pleurocarpous moss family Neckeraceae has in the recent years undergone profound changes, reviewed by Enroth (2013). Olsson et al. (2009) showed that the family is divided into three well-supported clades that the authors called Neckera-clade, Thamnobryum-clade and Pinnatella-clade. At the genus level, several of the “traditional” genera, such as Porotrichum (Brid.) Hampe (1863: 154), Thamnobryum Nieuwland (1917: 50), Homalia Bridel (1827: xlvi, 325, 763, 807, 812), Pinnatella Fleischer (1906: 79), Neckera Hedwig (1801: 200–210) and Forsstroemia Lindberg (1863: 605) were shown to be poly- or paraphyletic, and as a result several new genera were erected (e.g. -

COMMITTEE ON THE COMITÉ SUR LA SITUATION STATUS OF ENDANGERED DES ESPÈCES EN PÉRIL WILDLIFE IN CANADA AU CANADA ANNUAL REPORT TO THE CANADIAN ENDANGERED SPECIES CONSERVATION COUNCIL (CESCC) MAY 2003 COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF ENDANGERED WILDLIFE IN CANADA (COSEWIC) MARCO FESTA-BIANCHET CHAIR 1 PREFACE COSEWIC was given its mandate in 1976 by recommendation 6 of the 40th Federal- Provincial Wildlife Conference. In June, 1988, the Canadian Wildlife Directors directed COSEWIC to report to their Committee. In March 1999 the Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council (CESCC) released new Terms of Reference for COSEWIC. COSEWIC determines the status in Canada of wildlife species whose future may be in doubt and releases to the public the information upon which the designation of status is based. The twenty-sixth annual report of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada is herein provided to you, the Canadian Wildlife Directors’ Committee, for your review and comment. ----- ----- ----- 2 PART 1 November 25-29, 2002 meeting General Information The fall, 2002, meeting of COSEWIC took place at the Cartier Place Suite Hotel, Ottawa, Ontario, chaired by Dr. Marco Festa-Bianchet. All members were in attendance. World Wildlife Fund Canada, Canadian Nature Federation and Canadian Wildlife Federation attended the meeting as continuing observers. Workshop/Presentation/Special Meeting On November 25 during the afternoon a Workshop entitled “Approaches to Status Assignments Below the Species Level” took place. All members were in attendance as well as a number of observers. Several presentations were made by members and invited guest speakers. On November 26 in the evening, a meeting took place between members of COSEWIC as well as some observers at the Species Assessment Meeting, Lynda Maltby, director of the Species at Risk Branch of the Canadian Wildlife Service and two representatives of the Canadian Wildlife Directors’ Committee (CWDC), Bruce Morgan, British Columbia and Steve Bowcott, Ontario. -

ИГНАТОВ1, ИРИНА А.МИЛЮТИНА2 Abstract A new species from China, Podperaea baii, is described. In addition to morpho- logical differences from the second species of the genus, P. krylovii (Amlystegiaceae s.l.), P. baii differs in the nrITS1 sequence, which is very similar to that of the genus Herzogiella from the phylogenetically distant family Plagiotheciaceae. At the same time, nrITS2 in P. baii is much more similar to Amblystegiaceae than Plagiothe- ciaceae. This case is the first report of the putative remote hybridization in mosses. Резюме Из Китая описан новый вид, Podperaea baii, который, помимо небольших морфологических отличий от второго вида рода, P. krylovii (семейство Amlyste- giaceae s.l.), отличается еще последовательностью ITS1, которая соответствует роду Herzogiella из филогетически далекого семейства Plagiotheciaceae. При этом последовательность ITS2 у P. baii значительно более сходна с Amblystegia- ceae, нежели с Plagiotheciaceae. Данный случай является первым примером возможной отдаленной гибридазации у мхов. Стебель без гиалодермиса, с центральным пучком, простертый, всесторонне облист- венный, слабо неправильно ветвящийся; проксимальные веточные листья линейно- шиловидные, согнутые. Стеблевые листья рыхло или б. м. плотно черепитчато при- легающие или б. м. отстоящие, прямые, от округлых и яйцевидных до яйцевидно- ланцетных и удлиненно овальных, к верхушке б. м. закругленные, тупые или с небольшой отогнутой верхушечкой, к основанию слабо закругленные, не низбегающие или слабо низбегающие, б. м сильно вогнутые до плоских, не складчатые; край плоский или узко отогнутый в нижней части, иногда широко отогнутый по всей длине, цельный или с единичными мелкими тупыми зубцами в верхушке; жилка короткая двойная или от уровня 0.1-0.2 длины листа вильчато ветвящаяся, редко простая; клетки листа линейные, извилистые, б. м. тонкостенные, в верхушке короткие, ромбические, в углах основания более широкие, коротко прямоугольные, толсто- или тонкостенные, бес- цветные или окрашенные, образующие небольшую, резко или нерезко отграниченную группу или слабо отличающиеся от остальных клеток основания. There are 20 endemic genera of mosses and three of liverworts in North America, north of Mexico. All are monotypic except Thelia, with three species. General ecology, reproduction, distribution and nomenclature are discussed for each genus. Distribution maps are provided. The Mexican as well as Neotropical genera of bryophytes are also noted without detailed discussion. K e y w o r d s : bryophytes, distribution, ecology, endemic, liverworts, mosses, reproduction, North America Introduction Endemism in bryophyte genera of North America (north of Mexico) appears not to have been discussed in detail previously. Only the mention of genera is included in Schofield (1980) with no detail presented. Distribution maps of several genera have appeared in scattered publications. The present paper provides distribution maps of all endemic bryophyte genera for the region and considers the biology and taxonomy of each. When compared to vascular plants, endemism in bryophyte genera in the region is low. There are 20 genera of mosses and three of liverworts. The moss families Andreaeobryaceae, Pseudoditrichaceae and Theliaceae and the liverwort family Gyrothyraceae are endemics; all are monotypic. A total of 16 families of mosses and three of liverworts that possess endemic genera are represented. -

Eight species of Hygrohypnum occur in the Iberian Peninsula: Hygrohypnum cochlearifolium , H. duriusculum , H. eugyrium , H. luridum , H. molle, H. ochraceum , H. smithii and H. styria- cum . Of these, H. eugyrium and H. cochlearifolium are considered to be extinct in the Iberian Peninsula. Hygrohypnum alpestre and H. polare are definitively excluded from the Iberian bryophyte flora, since its occurrence at present or in the past could not be confirmed. Only the occurrence of Hygrohypnum ochraceum has been confirmed for Portugal. Keys, descriptions, illustrations, SEM photographs and distribution maps of the species of Hygrohypnum in the Iberian Peninsula are provided.
