Billington has announced the appointment of Charles Simic to be the Library’s 15th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. Simic will take up his duties in the fall, opening the Library’s annual literary series on Oct. 17 with a reading of his work. He also will be a featured speaker at the Library of Congress National Book Festival in the Poetry pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 29, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Simic succeeds Donald Hall as Poet Laureate and joins a long line of distinguished poets who have served in the position, including most recently Ted Kooser, Louise Glück, Billy Collins, Stanley Kunitz, Robert Pinsky, Robert Hass and Rita Dove. -

Martin Spring 2014 Abstract “If The House Is Not Yet Finished”: Urban Renewal and Postwar African American Poetry by Nilofar Gardezi Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Lyn Hejinian, Chair In my dissertation, I investigate the epic writings of Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Robert Hayden to tell the stories of black working class life and culture in postwar New York City, Chicago, and Detroit. I suggest that these writers’ modernist epics offer a counter-poetics to the “clean” modernism of urban renewal and, implicitly, lay bare the racial exclusionism foundational to not only urban renewal’s specific policies of segregation and displacement but also to its aesthetic claims to architectural avant-gardism and newness. This was a time of urban renewal-slum clearance programs that displaced and disrupted black communities—more specifically, a time when race, modernism, and geography all collided in urban renewal—and I argue that we can see both urban renewal and the poetic responses to it in terms of aesthetic modernism. In my first chapter, “Alternative Geographies of Community in Langston Hughes’s Montage of a Dream Deferred,” I claim that Hughes’s poem about the struggle for home and belonging in postwar Harlem invokes the importance of black self-determination and action through the democratic movements of bebop jazz and montage. -

A NARRATIVE OF AUGUSTA BAKER’S EARLY LIFE AND HER WORK AS A CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN WITHIN THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM BY REGINA SIERRA CARTER DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor James Anderson, Chair Professor Anne Dyson Professor Violet Harris Associate Professor Yoon Pak ABSTRACT Augusta Braxston Baker (1911-1998) was a Black American librarian whose tenure within the New York Public Library (NYPL) system lasted for more than thirty years. This study seeks to shed light upon Baker’s educational trajectory, her career as a children’s librarian at NYPL’s 135th Street Branch, her work with Black children’s literature, and her enduring legacy. Baker’s narrative is constructed through the use of primary source materials, secondary source materials, and oral history interviews. The research questions which guide this study include: 1) How did Baker use what Yosso described as “community cultural wealth” throughout her educational trajectory and time within the NYPL system? 2) Why was Baker’s bibliography on Black children’s books significant? and 3) What is her lasting legacy? KEYNOTE ADDRESS DISCOVERING OUR CONNECTIONS: RACE, GENDER, AND THE LAW MARGARET WALKER ALEXANDER* The great American poet, Walt Whitman wrote: I feel I am of them- I belong to those convicts and prostitutes myself- And henceforth I will not deny ther- For how can I deny myself? In these United States of America justice is tempered by money and power. Ever since the Constitution was framed more than two hundred years ago the power structure of America has been com- posed largely of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males-no Catholics, Jews, nor Negroes need apply. These excluded groups along with all women were considered the minorities. When the society is fas- cist, sexist, and racist, the judicial system can be neither better nor worse. But the law is of a dual nature. It is both an oppressor and a liberator. When segregation was the law of the land established in 1896 by the Supreme Court in the Plessy-Ferguson case, the law was an oppressor. Even before the Civil War under the Black Codes or penal system Black males were counted three-fifths of human beings and women * Margaret Walker Alexander was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Mrs. Alexander wrote her poem ForMy People when she was twenty-two. Since that time it has been a constant inspiration to the African-American community. Yale University Press published her first book of poetry in 1942. Houghton Mifflin published the historical novelJubilee in 1966. African-American Poets Past and Present: a Historical View
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1991 Volume IV: Recent American Poetry: Expanding the Canon African-American Poets Past and Present: A Historical View Curriculum Unit 91.04.04 by Joyce Patton African American Poets Past and Present: A historical View will address in this unit African-American poets and the poetry they wrote throughout the course of history. They will be listed in chronological order as they appear in history. The Eighteenth Century Beginnings (1700-1800) brought us Phillis Wheatley and Jupiter Hammon. The Struggle Against Slavery and Racism (1800-1860) brought us George Moses Horton and Frances W. Harper. The Black Man in the Civil War (1861-1865). There were not any poets that came to us in this time frame. Reconstruction and Reaction (1865-1915) brought us Paul Laurence Dunbar, W.E.B. Du Bois, William S. Braithwaite, and Fenton Johnson. Renaissance and Radicalism (1915-1945) brought us James Weldon Johnson, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, Contee Cullen, Angelina Grimke, Arna Bontemps, and Sterling Brown. The Present Generation brought us Robert Hayden, Gwendolyn Brooks, Imamu Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Owen Dodson, Samuel Allen, Mari E. Evans, Etheridge Knight, Don L. Lee, Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni. These poets have written poems that express the feelings of African-Americans from slavery to the present. Poems were not only things written during these times. There was folk literature, prison songs, spirituals, the blues, work songs, pop chart music, and rap music the craze of today, plus sermons delivered by ministers. The objectives of this unit are to teach children about the poets, the poems written expressing their feelings, and how to write poetry.
