Music Reborn ENTERPIECES CARROLLWOOD CULTURAL CENTER • Fall 2012 • Vol. 5 No. 4 nMusic Reborn In all of the world’s cultures, sleeping infants breathe the same. Their stomachs rise and fall, underneath a tiny ribcage, as their lungs expel air in a rhythm as lull- ing as an ocean’s waves. The process is as vital as it is instinctive, yet vocal coaches still have to remind singers to take deep breaths from the stomach instead of shal- low ones from the chest. Fear of sing- ing off-key can cause a singer to deviate from what comes naturally in sleep. It is through practice and determination that a singer overcomes fear, and remembers. Fear and Remembering Almost 70 years ago, in December of 1942, the well-known Vienna-born artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis became a resident of Theresienstadt, a Nazi concentration camp in Terezín, Czechoslovakia. Since the 1960s, several gifted Korean composers, including perhaps most notably Young Jo Lee (b. 1943), have been internationally acclaimed for their work. In Western countries, however, there has been a scarcity of academic studies examining the artistry of the music of these Korean composers. Nonetheless, as one of today’s most recognized composers in Korea, Young Jo Lee has been invited to numerous international concerts, conferences, and festivals where his works have been played and discussed. A salient feature of his compositions is the fusion of Korean traditional music and the elements of Western compositions, such as in, for one distinctive example, his piano composition, Piano Honza Nori. This musical study describes and analyzes how Lee integrates Korean traditional elements with Western musical ideas in Piano Honza Nori. Results of this study will contribute to the limited literature on the analysis of contemporary piano composition that integrates Korean traditional elements.

Abstract In recent decades, many Ghanaian composers have incorporated traditional Ghanaian folk tunes into their western-influenced compositional works. Among them are Ephraim Amu, Joseph Hanson Kwabena Nketia, Nicholas Nichodemus Kofie, and Cosmas Worlanyo Kofi Mereku who used folk tunes as themes for extended musical compositions. These compositions represent the hybrid cultural identity of Ghanaian composers whose roots are entrenched in traditional and Western musical cultures. This article focuses on the compositional technique I, as a modern composer, utilised in integrating the musical elements and features of ‘Nyavɔ Nyee Tu Gbɔmeɖoɖoe’, a Ghanaian folk song into a new contemporary art music composition for the Bb atɛntɛbɛn (a modified traditional bamboo flute) and piano. In this new composition also titled Nyavɔ Nyee Tu Gbɔmeɖoɖoe, I extended beyond the standard tuning systems of the modified Bb atɛntɛbɛn by structuring the piece based on sonata form. The sonata form contains modulation from the tonic triggering me to include two new chromatic pitches, expanding the capabilities of the modified Bb atɛntɛbɛn.

In order to study the Atenteben, the researcher worked closely with a number of professors at the University of Ghana, Legon, including Ms. Misonu Amu (whose father developed the modern Atenteben), Professor M. A. Opoku (expert and consultant in African dance), Professor Asante Darkwa (who wrote his thesis on the original Atenteben), and Professor John Collins (expert on neo-traditional music).

    THE FUSION OF KOREAN AND WESTERN ELEMENTS IN ISANG YUN’S KONZERT FÜR FLÖTE UND KLEINES ORCHESTER by SONIA CHOY (Under the Direction of Angela Jones-Reus and Stephen Valdez) ABSTRACT The Korean born composer, Isang Yun (1917-1995) is renowned for his synthesis of traditional Korean music and Taoist philosophy with Western compositional techniques. Yun adapted the Eastern concept of a single tone as the basis of a work into Western music. Yun’s early works (1959-1975) are based on the twelve tone system, while the compositions in his later periods (1975-1992) use a simplified musical language based on Eastern sounds. Yun’s Konzert für Flöte und Kleines Orchester (Concerto for Flute and Small Orchestra, 1977) features this language. The Konzert is influenced by three elements: first, the sound and performance techniques of traditional Korean wind instruments including the daegum, the danso, and the piri; second, Taoism, particularly in the way the work evokes a pervasive dialectic of Yin and Yang; and third, a programmatic fantasy influenced by two Korean poems, the anonymous Chungsanboelkok (Poem of a Clear Mountain) and Seok-cho Sin’s related poem, Chungsana, Malhayeora (Speak, the Clear Mountain). Focusing on the intersection of these three elements, this document explores the flute concerto in detail. It includes an overview of Yun’s stylistic influences, in particular the Korean instruments and performance practice he evokes in the work. It also describes the short period in which Yun composed his thirteen concertos (1976-1992), the musical style of which reflects his experience of abduction and imprisonment as well as his broader political and social concerns.
