The Spring Fling is fast approaching and it promises to be a lot of fun…as usual. After everyone has done all their antiquing, we’ll all meet for cheese and crackers, etc... about 4:00 p.m. and then drive over to Mike’s for a 6:00 p.m. dinner reservation. Our meeting will begin on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. which allows for everyone to head home at a decent hour after we’re done. One of our new members from Maine, Dawn Seaward, will be attending. She is downsizing her collection and will be bringing some glass to sell. FEBRUARY MEETING IN Tom Burns has a 280+ piece auction coming up in his hometown, Bath, York on May 11th. SOUTHBRIDGE, MASS. Please check out website for pictures and listing. Reminder postcards will be mailed out. Some sad news….Mae Raymond from Lisbon, CT, a club member for many years passed away on February 18th. She was a very sweet lady who enjoyed reading our newsletters as she was unable to attend our meetings. She was very close to Louie and Charlotte who kept in contact with her. She will be missed. That’s it for now. See you at the Spring Fling. Sincerely, Don Dorais, President NECGA New Members Dan Ruth from Brooklyn, NY Kimberly Cusick from Hadley, PA Dawn Seaward from Acton, Maine Welcome Aboard! 2013 Carnival Glass Conventions & Auctions Auction Heart of America Carnival Glass Association Convention / Apr 24-28, Auction Embassy Suites Airport Hotel, Kansas City, MO. Email _____ Mail _____ Carnival Glass Miniatures by Greg Dilian As we know, Carnival Glass comes in all shapes and sizes from the tiniest buttons to the massive Grape and Cable banquet punch bowls. In this article, I will discuss five miniatures that are in my personal collection. Not only cute, they don’t occupy a lot of space and can be quite rare and valuable. I sold several miniatures last October at the Mid-Atlantic Carnival Glass Jamboree in Hagerstown, Md. and they did quite well. So keep your eyes open and you never know what will turn up. 1. Skyline toothpick holder and salt- This is the only one of these in this pattern 2. that I have ever seen though the shape comes in other patterns. I found it on 3. eBay from an Argentinean seller. The art deco design reminds me of the NYC 4. skyline, thus, the name. It has two salt cellars connected in the middle with a 5. small toothpick holder above the connecting bar. It is in a dark marigold and 6. the two salts both have a star base. It measures 5” wide, 3 ½” high and each salt 7. has a 1 ½” base. Rare and unique to say the least, I treasure it in my collection. 8. 9. Sitting Bulldog figural- This tough looking little bulldog has soft marigold iridescence. It is made of solid glass and wears a studded collar. It may have had, at one time, glass eyes but this one does not. I believe it to be a Westmoreland product. Similar contemporary bulldogs can be found in a variety of colors with shiny iridescence. A larger contemporary bulldog doorstop, that is quite heavy, was also made in the 1960’s. These newer ones bear the WG trademark on the chest. This one is 2 ½” high with a 2 1/8” base. Fido hear guards one of my display cabinets. Blue Scottie Dog- I sold a marigold version of this dog at the Mid-Atlantic that went for $275. Tom Burns had never seen one in blue and was not sure if it was a repro or not. If anyone has any knowledge of this, I would be interesting in knowing. This cute little guy stands 2 ½” tall and is 2” long, the same as the marigold one. It has electric iridescence. The marigold Scottie is shown in Marion Hartung’s book 10 on page 59. She speculated that it might have been fastened, at one time, to something else due to the flat base. Heisey Princess footed salt- This little salt is from the Depression Era and stands on three dolphin feet. Rarely do these turn up with iridescence. The iridescence on this one is a light pastel marigold, typical of Heisey pieces. It stands 1 ½” tall and 3 ¼” on diameter. Dugan Twigs vase- These little jewels made by Dugan in Indiana, Pa. were made with various edge treatments. They are found in the Jack-in-the-Pulpit shape with a crimped edge, round with a crimped edge and with straight up sides with no crimping. This one has three ruffles. The distinguishing feature on these are the three twigs connecting the base with the body of the vase. Found mainly in marigold, these vases are expensive when found and desirable. The base has a grass-like pattern on top. Aqua opal exists in the version with straight up sides. Any comments or question can be sent to me at [email protected]. Brocaded Poppy by Bob Smith The surfacing of this ice green Brocaded Poppy which is now a part of my collection, came as a complete surprise. It was previously unknown to exist, yet it had been sitting on a shelf in Ken and Aileen Oppenlander's home for years. It was originally found by them in Wichita, Kansas. I suspect he ran into the same problem that I encountered - a complete lack of information about it. Fostoria made the "Brocaded" items between 1928 and 1931. The Brocaded Acorns footed tumblers in either ice blue, rose and orchid colors are recorded in Fostoria’s catalogs, but the Brocaded Poppy is not to be found.
